Florist Rinji 🌷
Proof that all Border agents are either stupidly insane, insanely stupid or both - part 1 [ masterlist ]
Ninomiya Squad & Tamakoma-2 Squad
Inukai, ignoring the glare Ninomiya send him: Soooo, Taiho-chan, What was your brother like? I'm curious.
Chika, munching on the onigiri Osamu brought for their squad: Uhm- he is-
Osamu, jump in at the opportunity to shit-talk the older Amatori: An absolute evil asshole.
Inukai, clearly amused: Oh my, why is that?
Chika: He cheated at every board games we play.
Osamu: Including fucking Crokinole. He is the sole reason why my mom banned all board games whenever he and Chika visit
Chika: I thought your mom banned Uno because she find sixteen plus 4 cards you hid under the table?
Inukai, literally beaming with the new information: SIXTEEN!? You hid plus 4 cards under the table?! Wow, i didn't know you have the balls for that, Four Eyes!
Yuma, mouth's full of rice: What- *take another bite* Whats Crocimore? I neva hearr o it befoor.
Osamu, purposingly ignoring Chika & Inukai's comments: Stop talking while you're eating, Yuma. Also It's called Crokinole. It is similar to the games of pitchnut, carrom, and pichenotte that Yotaro showed you. Players take turns shooting discs across the circular playing surface, trying to land their discs in the higher-scoring regions of the board, while also attempting to knock opposing discs off the board.
Tsuji, now genuinely curious and invested: How can he cheated on that game?
Chika: We still haven't figured that out. Osamu suspected for a while, but no evidence. Rinji only confirmed it during a Truth or Dare but did not elaborate how he did that.
Osamu, visibily irritated at the memories: There's definitely somethings wrong with his discs. I just haven't find out how he did that. There's this one time I pick up his disc after he accidentally dropped and it's feel like- what the word for it?- oh right, heavier, it's significantly heavier than the others. But when I pick that same disc after the game end, it's the same weight as all the others. Still frustrate me how he did that to this day.
Hyuse, taking another onigiri from Osamu's hand: Isn't it that just the same technology as those trion lottery sticks used in the Away Mission Test?
*ten seconds of silence as the implication sink in*
Hyuse, blissfully unaware: By the way, can we go first, Yotaro promised to buy me takoyaki himself and I don't want to miss it out.
Osamu, just snap out of his thoughts: YEAh!- yeah, let's get you back to our base-
*Tamakoma-2 give Ninomiya Squad a quick wave before bolting out*
Tsuji, attempting to address the elephant in the room: Uhm, that’s-
Ninomiya, overwhelmed: We’ll talk about that later.

Spoilers for world trigger-
If Rinji was the one who'd actually manipulated Hatohara to supply them triggers and go to the Neighborhood, I honestly wonder how Ninomiya will react if he sees him on the Away mission. Like, imagine him reacting emotionally and just beating the shit out of Rinji 😭 Because, in Ninomiya's head, Hatohara is now expelled from Border because of him and she won't be on his team anymore. And the punishment for her would be memory erasure, and who knows how much the erasure wipes. She'd probably forget all about Ninomiya and Ema and her squad. I have a headcanon he was inlove with Hatohara, and if it is true, it'd be devastating for him that she'll forget him.
There's also a chance this was fully Hatohara's decision and idea. Ninomiya was grieving and didn't want to blame her. So, maybe she'd be angry during the confrontation, because she's her own person and she's made her choice and Ninomiya is painting her as someone timid who makes others decide for her.
Would Ema be mad at Rinji also if that happens? If he found out Chika's brother was the one behind all of this, would he be bitter? Or would he still love her? Chika already struggles with how others see her, so this would also affect her, even if Ema doesn't show anger at her. And since Rinji probably went to the Neighborhood because of how trion soldiers always seemed to follow Chika, she might blame herself a lot.
I wonder if the "secretly emotionally-driven" theme of Ninomiya will be really relevant later. If he does meet Hatohara, then would he support her decision and let her be on the run? Or would he do his duty as a Border agent and apprehend her?
Was feeling angsty so I thought of this lmao XD
LMAOOOOOO the neighbourhood trip ain’t doing so well rn
when rereading rinji's first appearance in chapter 13, i was really struck by the way he talked about chika's childhood and the way no one believed her about being targeted by trion soldiers.
"She says... when they first started coming after her, the Border base wasn't built yet. Nobody knew about Neighbors. So when she asked for help, nobody took her seriously. And then... there was one friend who did."
he very explicitly excises his own memories of that time from the story he tells osamu. so we Don't know about what rinji did at the time, how he felt about it, any of that. and in chika's firsthand account of the time from chapter 179, she Also doesn't mention Rinji specifically.
"My mom, my dad, and my classmates... none of them believed me. None of them except one friend."
although when she tells yuma about her situation she says she told both of them her secret. so thats there at least
to me, the most interesting read on the situation is that he didn't believe her either at first. maybe he changed his mind after aoba disappeared, or maybe in the wake of the first large-scale invasion and Border’s appearance, when ‘monsters who kidnapped my sister’s friend’ became a story with a lot more people who could tell it. either way, it’s clear that he suggested that chika get help from border, and she refused. it’s also clear that he doesn’t think much of their parents.
“We’re the only ones who can look after her.”
“We might die or get captured. Your parents would never forgive me if that happened.” “But that goes for you too...” “It’s not the same.”
(admittedly, he’s talking to a fourteen year old kid: in a very real way it isn’t the same. but that’s kind of belied by telling that same fourteen year old kid that he and rinji are the only ones who can look after chika, huh!)
i just think it would be really Something if, just as 15-16 yr old rinji realized his baby sister had been telling the truth about the monsters out to get her the whole time, chika was resolving not to let anyone know that very same thing.
writing osamu and rinji not as in love but something else (friend who is the only person you know with similar enough set of family issues to relate to you who you absolutely integrate into all of your life plans because they're the first person you've ever met who gets why you are who you are as, like, a person and why would you ever give that up)
