Another thing on Ace Attorney: the case progression in the first game is incredibly ballsy to me. Like the tutorial is so very normal, sets you up so well for a regular game of progressively more important cases with your mentor and love interest by your side, and then BOOM. Second case immediatly begins with said mentor fucking MURDERED, in your own fucking office, by a near-omnipotent psychopatic CEO who dresses like a cartoon background character. The game looks at you in the eyes and says « okay now that you know how this shit works, you just have to jail the most powerful guy in the whole country. Yes he can and will bribe everyone in the general vicinity of the crime. Yes he practically has the judge and the guy who lead ur law firm on a leash. Yes he can beat your ass then put YOU in jail. Oh and btw you will also face the best prosecutor in the business who never ever lost a case, and if you do lose, your mentor’s little sister dies. Good fucking luck my bitch ». And then the following cases go back to normal tomfoolery with regular stakes. The last case in the game is actually solving your love interest’s rival’s childhood traumas. Who made those choices

Happy birthday!
i really like that osamu isn't strictly even all that empathetic. he obviously cares about chika and yuma, but he helps them not because he feels bad for them or sympathizes—he literally can't. he never experienced something like what they went through. even the initial invasion that his classmates were commisterating over—he couldn't relate because he went to another school. he's an outsider to the trauma a lot of mikado city share.
that's the point.
he lacks experience. not just in combat, but in life in general. all its trials, its tragedies, its victories, and its swells. he was a normal boy. he is a normal boy.
and that's a good thing. he's exactly what a lot of these people need. osamu mikumo isn't kind or empathetic—he's moral. incredibly so! and he will stick by them even if it's unwise and it's unfair, because that's what he believes is the right thing to do.
amongst people who are very logical and pragmatic out of necessity (because that's what makes war and death and loss easier to deal with) osamu will choose to do the right thing, even if it's not always the correct thing. and that's what makes him such a fascinating mc to follow. it's why it's so rewarding to see what he will do next. not just because he's great at pulling off cheese strats or insane plays—it's because osamu is the one doing it.
one genre of fanfiction that seems to have mostly disappeared since i became an adult is shenanigans-type fics. like not exactly crack but just "the gang goes to 7-11" type, extremely low-stakes plot stories. the beach episodes of fanfiction. i just feel like i don't see those around so much anymore. whered they go. i miss them :(
i love charlie brown so much. what a miserable little child.
Charlie Brown, undaunted, seeks tenderness and fulfillment on every side: in baseball, in building kites, in his relationship with his dog, Snoopy, in playing with the girls. He always fails. His solitude becomes an abyss, his inferiority complex is pervasive—tinged by the constant suspicion (which the reader also comes to share) that Charlie Brown is not inferior. Worse: he is absolutely normal. He is like everybody else. This is why he is always on the brink of suicide or at least of nervous breakdown: because he seeks salvation through the routine formulas suggested to him by the society in which he lives...

99% of what I read is angst but you know what my secret favorite fanfiction category is? Outsider POV. I love a good fic where we’re in the perspective of characters who have no idea what the fuck is going on and are stuck watching our MCs be absolutely ridiculous. I love every version of this trope. It could be mostly text based. It could be mostly social media based. As long as it checks the boxes? I’m all in. You don’t understand. I think the first one of these I read was with Sam and Dean Winchester as kids in school from the perspective of a guidance counselor. I have been ruined. I have read every fic I could find with the premise of SkyGem’s Retirement AU (Yuri On Ice). I read White Collar DC crossover fanfiction despite not knowing or caring about White Collar because I treat it like outsider POV fanfictions with a fun identity reveal element. My favorite My Hero Academia fanfiction of all time is entirely made up of social media bit and bobs (tumblr posts, twitter posts, text message chains, etc). I am currently reading a Carmen Sandiego fic like this and it is such a crack fic. It is so unserious. I can’t put it down. I am so hooked.
#it’s writing with dramatic irony #WE know who these characters are #WE know their intentions are good or bad or who they are #but everyone else is going ‘what’s this guys deal’ #and i love it tags yoinked from @thestuffedalligator

i'm now realizing that the chika-osamu and hatohara-ninomiya parallels kinda work in opposite directions with what we've known about them (credits to a whole lot of other watori fans before me because they've inspired this post)
initially, we're made to think that chika and hatohara are of the same ilk because of their inability to shoot people, their similar appearances (droopy eyes paired with mid-length black hair), similar personalities (soft-spoken, reserved, but known to be caring), similar narrative impact (main motivation for their squad getting into the selection exam), and similar motivating factors (their brother is in the neighborhood). but then the reveal comes out that chika isn't incapable of shooting people- it's that she's afraid that she'll be judged for doing so, while hatohara just can't shoot people, at all. then, you notice more differences between hatohara and chika, like how chika's abnormally large amounts of trion allows her to implement strategies that hatohara couldn't, and in general, chika's ability to do things that hatohara can't makes it so that chika's more willing to go along with Border regulations, while hatohara resorts to smuggling herself into the neighborhood, likely aware of the repercussions to herself and her squadmates.
that isn't to say they're not meant to be narrative parallels- it's just that hatohara and chika's similarities are built up to make them feel the same, only for ashihara motherfucking genius daisuke to pull a 180 and make chika take the path that hatohara could not- and would not- take. in a way, chika is a what-if scenario of hatohara if she were able to go through the regular Border selection for the away missions, but it also helps us recognize that hatohara and chika are two distinct characters that each have a different impact on the narrative of watori.
then, we have osamu and ninomiya, who we initially think are complete opposites on every spectrum possible. ninomiya has light brown hair, osamu has black hair, ninomiya has good vision, osamu requires glasses, ninomiya has monstrous amounts of trion, osamu has a paltry level of trion, ninomiya is ruthless and selfish, osamu's much more compassionate and altruistic (yeah yeah you do this for yourself stfu nobody believes you at this point osamu), ninomiya is unafraid of insulting someone to their face, osamu is much more reserved in that regard, ninomiya's uniform is a wholeass suit, osamu's uniform is the standard tamakoma one, ninomiya is unreadable and confusing to the reader, while osamu is a lot more open and laid out for us to see. clearly, they are meant to be set up to be as different from each other as possible from the get-go (there's probably more but those are all the differences i can think of the top of my head).
but then we learn more about ninomiya and his relationship with ninomiya squad and hatohara, and we realize "oh fuck, ninomiya and osamu are super fucking similar!!!" because ninomiya squad's main motivation back when hatohara was with them was to get hatohara onto the expedition and guess which other team was initially formed mainly to get the singular girl on the group onto the expedition team: i'll save you the time. tamakoma-2. ninomiya and osamu are also leaders that often take bad things that happen to their squad personally: just look at how hard ninomiya took it after he found out hatohara defected and got the squad demoted, and then look at how osamu beats himself up in the beginning of the rank wars arc for being reliant on yuma + making unsound tactical decisions b/c of his protectiveness over chika!!!!!! and then you look closer into the actions they take for the sake of their team and you see that scene where ninomiya confronts the Border higher-ups on why they didn't pass the selection exam and then you realize "oh shoot, ninomiya was willing to do whatever it took in order to get hatohara onto the expedition, even if it meant going up against the border higher-ups just like osamu was willing to do everything he could to weasel hyuse and yuma onto the team!!!!"
AND THEN YOU REALIZE THAT THE NINOMIYA BOWING TO IZUMI SCENE WAS A PARALLEL TO OSAMU'S PLEADING TO KITORA.
again, this isn't meant to be a post that disregards the differences between ninomiya and osamu. i'm saying that they can both be narrative foils and narrative parallels, because clearly ninomiya and osamu have way too many similarities to just write ninomiya off as tamakoma's biggest opp. in a way, osamu's a more extreme version of ninomiya, who's willing to throw away much more of his self-preservation for the sake of other people than ninomiya is (who, mind you, was still willing to throw a lot of it for hatohara's sake).
TLDR:
chika-hatohara: start off similar, end up diverging on different paths because they are fundamentally different people
ninomiya-osamu: start off different, end up having many similar plot points because of their desire to help chika/hatohara with their goal
