He is tapping his nearly-finished cigarette staring emotionlessly at the boy as he enters the room. ‘Who is to say I won’t?’ Words are as dry as ash. He could scold the kid, but that would make it seem like he is more responsible for him than he is or has ever wanted to be. 

     ‘Has your babysitter left you to sulk?’ Tokyo, of course, is nowhere to be seen. The worst part is that they probably think they are being clever. ‘Or to what exactly do I owe the pleasure? You know,’ he pauses, smearing the bud of the cigarette:

      ‘Most fathers would have washed their child’s mouth with soap for saying that — just to give of the impression that they care. You are clever enough to know that it’s bullshit and just their vanity being hurt.’

where’s he been?

grew up in a small town just like cape hazel, but in michigan

got the hell outta that town for college

met the love of his life in college

damn, he was gonna marry her

unfortunately, he fell victim to the army’s promises that they could take care of him

couldn’t afford to go after his true dream of being a vet, so he had to change course

went off to do his military service

kept in contact with abigail until he changed posts

never heard from her again after changing, so he tried to move on

since his service had ended, he’s moved around until he settled in cape hazel due to a friend’s rec

didn’t expect a young woman to get m*rdered (rip hope)

anyway he’s back on track to become a vet (while being a vet (oof double parentheses, veteran))
