u rly do not KNOW how crazy i have been abt this but how crazy i am abt it right now, specifically, and this feeds literally right into it. i have a bent towards magical thinking anyway and any kind of art or film or novel that engages with magical realism in even the most shallow, passing way makes me foam at the mouth. the way via magical realism you can represent, narratively, certain abstract concepts sets my brain on fire. and with svu in general it gets even worse, and i'm going to try and explain this thing i've never really tried to explain, so bear w me.
as far as magical realism goes:
over the long life of the show there are moments that, by virtue of the actual production, require viewer suspension of disbelief: recurring actors showing up as different characters, the way svu seems to magnetically attract only volunteers who have experienced some kind of abuse/exploitation themselves (because a troubled past to unpack is such a FAST way to make your audience empathize with a new character, and gives you more story to write), the way the mains and olivia especially just won’t fucking die even as they repeatedly suffer injuries or events that would almost certainly kill a regular person, the cold opens having the victims of the week either in close proximity to or directly interacting with whatever character is going to be the focus of the night’s episode, the sheer number of crimes and the outrageous amount of serial killers that seem to spawn in manhattan svu’s jurisdiction. apply a little magical realism to that and those production necessities become features, not bugs.
then there are the elements of the show that lend themselves to metaphorical or symbolic representation: the way serena haunts every single episode even when her name isn’t spoken, the way elliot’s presence lingers restlessly over 2.0 and then his return as some kind of like... metafictional course correction, the way olivia’s empathy makes her “carry” victims inside her to the point where she has to steel herself against internalizing them. elliot’s spirituality via catholicism is such low-hanging fruit here it speaks for itself. season 1 even briefly gestures towards it, that one episode where a pregnant rape victim cures elliot’s cold, and i will take that and run with it, as well as fold in elliot’s threatening to haunt olivia if she would hypothetically let the spot he’s hypothetically killed in the line of duty become a shrine. and then there’s the like. queasy existential horror of the show itself; existing because of real world violence, and its “ripped from the headlines” aspects making it a machine, or a kind of monster, consuming an endless supply of stories of real human suffering to continue staying alive. in especially heinous, truly a high water mark for transformative fiction in general, carmen maria machado gets at some of this, and these parts especially just. lay me tf out:
“Sacrifice”: Benson leaves her handsome date at the table, in the restaurant, waiting for the drinks. She walks down an empty side street. She takes off her shoes and walks down the center of the road. It is too hot for April. She can feel her feet darkening from the blacktop. She should be afraid of broken glass but she is not. In front of a vacant lot, she stops. She reaches down and touches the pavement. It is breathing. Its two-toned heartbeat makes her clavicle vibrate. She can feel it. She is suddenly, irrevocably certain that the earth is breathing. She knows that New York is riding the back of a giant monster. She knows this more clearly than she has ever known anything before. “Flight”: The city is still hungry. The city is always hungry. But tonight, the heartbeat slows. They fly, they fly, they fly.
“Spectacle”: On a Wednesday, they catch so many bad guys that Benson throws up seventeen girls in one afternoon. She laughs as they spill out of her, tumble into her vomit like oil slicks, and dissipate into the air.
“Bully”: The last girl clings to the inside of Benson’s skull. “I don’t want to be alone,” Benson says. “I don’t, either,” Benson says, “but you need to go.” Stabler comes into Benson’s apartment. “Her name is Marcela Tietra. She was twelve. She was raped by her father, and her mother did not believe her. Her father killed her. He buried her on Brighton Beach.” Inside, the girl shook her head, as if to dislodge the sand in her hair. “Go,” Benson says. “Go.” The girl smiles and doesn’t, her bells barely rocking. “Thank you,” Benson says. “You’re welcome,” Benson says. There is a sound—a new sound. A sigh. And then, she is gone. Stabler hugs Benson. “Goodbye,” he says, and so is he.
“Smoked”: The DA and Benson roast vegetables on the grill, laughing. The smoke rises up and up, drifts over the trees, curls past birds and rot and blooms. The city smells it. The city takes a breath.
AND THEN into this enter ilene. ilene of the agnes bogdani prophetic coffee grounds, ilene of kathy speaking from beyond the grave through The Letter, ilene of in a parallel universe it will always be you and i. add to elliot’s catholicism, and some of how i can’t help thinking abt 1.0, w elliot accidentally swearing an unintentional marriage oath to olivia in s1 (i’m your partner, for better or worse literal words in the marriage vow, and how in the old testament god commands “if a man vow unto the lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all the proceedeth out of his mouth” and that to make a vow and not keep it is a sin) complete with the exchanging of tokens of fidelity (the medallion and semper fi note).
AND THEN u take this big soup in my head, and you throw in warren leight and my eternal fistfight w his conception of svu. easy enough to get meta and just incorporate it, cast him as the literal invisible hand exerting power on the svuniverse, and how 2.0′s nyc seems again and again to try and eat olivia alive and how, against all odds, she just keeps surviving. the entirety of lewis, who is given narrative-breaking power that can only be described as magical realism (walking through walls, his ability to talk people into things that is basically a beguiling enchantment), is evidence enough that Something Up There is out to get olivia. over the course of his seasons due to the sheer number of stories he had to come up with, you can kind of pick up a little on leight’s authorial preoccupations, the odd way things unintentionally echo to the point they become leitmotifs. the one of which i am thee most crazy about being whatever the hell is going on with vodka in the svuniverse, how it’s vodka that serena drinks, that cragen keeps a bottle of in his desk drawer, that’s sonya paxton’s poison of choice, that lewis uses to subdue and terrorize her, that burton throws a glass of against the door in the plaza hotel. (another, courtesy of @o6666666 is counting the way kinds of immolation happen again and again and again, and who exactly it happens to, and how often those people are women serving as “sacrifices” to the plot or “difficult” women being punished by being burned alive, in part or in totality). i will again say that the ideal fanfic to deal w/ confess your sins to be free would be a stranger than fiction-style oneshot where fin slowly becomes aware of the fourth wall and omnipotent author, and fights his way out of the story to keep olivia from getting sucked into a cycle of abuse.
there’s the eo of it all, too, simmering in the background. star-crossed, maybe, but certainly bound by an oath, literally, again, for better or worse. something with a pull so strong that three times olivia tries to escape it and can’t get away, and elliot might be able to go walkabout for ten years but he’ll still end up right where he started, them orbiting each other perpetually, tied together by that red string of fate. ironically, so strong that no matter how many times leight or even dick wolf himself tried to kill it, it also just kept living (til death do they part). for how omnipresent that “sliding doors alternate universes” trope is in fanfiction it’s very odd to me that so few exist in svu’s fanfiction. so, too, with the immortality trope. the one that seems to have caught in the collective fandom imagination is the soulmate au fics, and with that i would like to point out how interesting that is, given fanfiction specifically is a responsive, conversational kind of media, and not a generative one.
ANYWAY. scream. idk where to put any of this so it just churns continually. snowballing.
wine drunk so I restarted dai
