11 years without that smile
Vet'al Cuerno Volty & Drop Dead Fred
It's now been 9 years, since this absolute legend of British Comedy left us,
This bloke changed my life, the comedy world feels so empty without you here, but we know you're in our hearts and memories now, you've brought many together
(Ok so I know it’s nearly the end of Rik Mayall day but...)
I have a few of my own words to say about this amazing man.
June 9th is a weird day for me because this man died six years ago, and while I didn’t actually know him, I know the few of us who were and still remain to be big fans of him and his work who didn’t get the opportunity to meet him still feel like we knew Rik because he was so relatable and such a comic genius that it was hard to not know at least a part of who he was.
Of course I am always gutted when I think about how I never got to meet him, but at least I can feel like he’s in my heart forever, which might be weird to some people but guess what. I DON’T GIVE A HOOT.
He was a nutcase, an eccentric but fantastically brilliant and kind man who always made it his job to make people laugh. He certainly made me laugh!
I’ve only ever heard good things about Rik and while he may have had his own health problems, he didn’t let them get in the way of meeting his fans or when someone needed cheering up.
I miss him an absolute ton and honestly for me it gets a little harder each year that he is dead because his memory gets further and further away, which I’m so glad so many of us still try and keep maintained and fresh in our minds.
I never want to forget him and I’m sure he’s watching us thinking we’re all a bunch of losers for missing him (total bastard!), but it’s OK. Really, he knew what life was about. That was clear in his honorary doctorate speech in 2008 and spoke of his five mantras.
I have tried to stick to them. They are perfect and he really is right. Love is most CERTAINLY the answer. We must all love each other.
Damn you for leaving us Rik, but we will make sure your memory lives on.
1958-2014.
Me: *innocently browses the web for anything tyo related*
News sources popping up:
Rik Mayall is dead.
Me: Shut up! Just SHUT UP okay? I know - we all know - and it's not right! Stop reminding me!
Sorry but I will never be over his death.
rip Rik you legend have this really shitty edit (that can also be found on my instagram @/peachycomets )
Our blogs will become a shrine! And punks and skins and Rastas will all gather round and all hold their hands in sorrow for their fallen leader! And all the grown-ups will say, ‘But why are you crying?’ And we will say, 'Haven’t you heard? Rick is dead! The People’s Poet is dead!’ … And I’ll respond with How can Rick be dead when we still have his poems?’“
in the Rik Mayall fandom we celebrate some events
so far this year we’ve had
Rik Mayall Week (via the best of black adder twitter account) (January 22nd to January 28th of this year)
Rik’s birthday (March 7th) (and even when it was over people kept posting about him which was so sweet to see)
in between the days drop dead fred and mr jolly lives next door first released
(the how the Young Ones changed comedy documentary which had a tribute moment during the ending dedicated to the peoples poet himself)
and now... June 9th (I think all of us know what happened on that dreadful day)

it all started with a theatre, something about vanessa redgrave and meeting his best mate while at university before they changed british comedy FOREVER.
