things i noticed in banana fish episode 9

. Spoilers for ep 9 below the cut

So, in Banana fish episode 9 as Shorter was drugged and trying to fight against Eiji, he hears Ash call for him. Shorter looks up toward the door frame as if he has broken out of the blind rage that the drug caused, and he sees the statue of an angel. 

This statue alludes to the prequel of Banana fish, Angel Eyes, which tells the story of how ash and shorter meet in juvie. In Angel Eyes, Short tells Ash that he looks like an angel on a card given to hima while ago and he adds in the joke that he would jerk off to it; that begins a new friendship, However it is implied through official art styles choices that Ash was Shorter's first love.

So From what can be seen in the show, what broke Shorter out of the trance was his angel, Ash, calling out to him. From that point on, he asks Ash if he can make everything stop, a sense of regret in his blind actions and implies that Ash has to kill him before he ends up killing Eiji.
