Mary Kelly’s clothes and posessions
Mary was the only victim to be murdered inside her home.
- She was last seen wearing a linsey frock and a red shawl pulled around her shoulders. She was bare headed.
- Detective Constable Walter Dew claimed to know Kelly well by sight and said she always wore a spotlessly clean white apron.
- She could be wearing some sort of undergarment, possibly a chemise, in the crime scene photo, but some reports say she was naked.
In her room there was also:
a bedside table
a bed
two tables and a chair
a couple of engravings, one, "The Fisherman's Widow", stuck over the mantelpiece (a shelf above a fireplace)
an open small cupboard, containing a few bits of pottery, some ginger-beer bottles, and a bit of bread on a plate
a wash-stand
a few pieces of clothes neatly folded on a chair (no desciption, but possibly her garments, including a velvet bodice)
a pair of boots (no desciption)
remains of burned clothing found in the fireplace (no descrition, but possibly her black velvet jacket and her felt bonnet; and also possibly a hat, jacket, two men’s shirts, a boy’s shirt and a child’s petticoat all belonging to Maria Harvey)
a kettle with melted spout
a candle in broken wineglass
a clay pipe left behind by her exboyfriend Joseph Barnett
some sort of metal wash tub under the bed
some blood stained clothing or bedding by the bed
a farthing dip in a bottle
a man’s pilot coat hung over the window in place of a curtain, owned by Maria Harvey
Gone but not forgotten. May she rest in peace. 🌺
