Rising Action
Deep in the wilds of Murasa, an elite party of adventurers risk their lives to secure a priceless relic from a perilous ruin. Known only in hushed tones as the Zendikar Rising Design File, this legendary tome contains secrets of Zendikar’s past, its present, and—some say—even its future. But as our heroes pore over the pages, ready to share its endless mysteries with the world, they notice: one page is missing . . .
Welcome, brave inventurers! This is @3smuth back for my first challenge as an Official Judge™, and at a particularly exciting time. All this week, Zendikar Rising prereleases will be going on, and the announcement of our winners this Friday will correspond with the set’s official release. And in honour of the new set, I’d like to try something I’m hopeful will become a recurring feature: this time, we’re looking for the missing treasures of Zendikar.
For this week’s challenge, I want you to come up with cards that coulda, woulda, shoulda been included in the new set. Something you can imagine was wrongfully left on the cutting room floor, a better version of a card that did see print, or something particularly clever that the rest of the design team just missed.
The Goals (M.E.O.W.)
Mandatory: Design a card that could have appeared in Zendikar Rising. Use only mechanics from the set or those that are evergreen.
Encouraged: The most successful designs will be those that align with and bridge the gaps between the themes of the set, beyond just applying its mechanics.
Optional: You do not need to use any of the named mechanics featured in the set explicitly, as long as your card feels like it belongs within the structure of the set.
Warning: Be mindful of not only what mechanics exist, but how they exist. As an example: MDFC technology can do many things, but that doesn’t mean all of those things will be applicable to this challenge.
In case you haven’t seen it yet, a full spoiler of the set’s cards is visible here. Be sure to pay attention to the themes as you look through it, as those should really be guiding your design decisions this week. Innovation is strongly encouraged as always, but this week will test your ability to innovate within an existing set structure.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to drop us a line. Until then, enjoy exploring the (always) new terrain of Zendikar.
