I recently came into possession of a crazy amount of local merino raw wool fleeces. With a million kgs (almost) of wool in every crevice of my home, I decided to try my hand at dyeing.
I purchased some Landscape Dyes online but obviously couldn't wait for those to arrive. Found some Navy Rit Dye in the linen cupboard from an abandoned project and decided to have a practice run using an old slow cooker I was going to donate.
I took about 50g of scoured wool and using a mixture of the packet instructions and online tutorials, the result was a beautiful blue, purple and navy mix.
But here's why I'm not happy and won't be using Rit Dye in the future.
Felting:
There was significant felting in areas. Some I could put down to inexperience (maybe) but I'm pretty confident I did everything to prevent felting and wonder if the dye was too harsh and made the wool brittle and felt.
Smell:
I am one of those people that are pretty sensitive to smell but it doesn't usually bother me to the point where I start to feel really uncomfortable.
The dyeing process was fine, where the wool was physically in the dye pot. Smelt yuck but it was fine, you know? But once I rinsed and dried the wool, it just got me to the point where I couldn't work with it. The stench is unbelievable. The only way I can describe it is a deep sort of chemical smell. Just awful.
Anyway, enough complaining. I ended up spraying it all with room spray to try and mask the scent which worked but can't have done the fibre any good.
It was fun to have a play and am currently carding it up with some white un-dyed merino for a bit of variation so I'll share the finished yarn when I eventually get to it.
