Underappreciated Sherlock Character - Edition 1
I’m thinking of doing this occasionally. So, the underappreciated Sherlock Character of this post is - Carruthers! Movie edition, because the only character bearing the name “Carruthers” in the book is of no relevance whatsoever to movie!Carruthers.
^^ Carruthers rowing the boat to pick Mary up while Mycroft just sits, waves a lantern and monologues at her for about a minute. Carruthers doesn’t say a lot in this scene (or in any scene, really) but his presence is valued highly.
^^ Carruthers midway through a conversation with Watson, Mycroft and Simza about the security at the peace summit. I think his line (directed at Watson) is “We have doubled the security, sir.” Correct me if I’m wrong in saying that this is his only line in the whole movie? (I’M WRONG, HE SAYS “TELEGRAM FOR MRS WATSON” EARLIER ON) Either way, it shows he’s used to being treated like an equal by Mycroft as he’s not afraid to speak up, but he is still respectful around Watson, though maybe not as knowledgeable (calls him “sir” instead of “Doctor”.)
^^ This is Carruthers during the “telegram for Mrs Watson” scene. And yes, I did stop halfway through the making of this post to find this image because I’d completely forgotten this scene existed until about 5 minutes ago. This is Carruthers, looking suitably fed up with Mycroft being Mycroft and standing around naked, but also knowing better than to mention it. He just wants to give Mary her telegram and then leave. His voice is very soft and British, he’s very graceful and quiet, like a ghost. He’s trying his best. Just let him have a break.
^^ This is Carruthers protecting the British Prime Minister. We only get this background shot for a couple of seconds, but it’s very much worth noticing (and possibly the greatest shot in the entire movie). He looks very fed up and also slightly shocked, as if he hadn’t seen this coming right from the get go. Mycroft basically shoves him, yells “Carruthers, protect the Prime Minister!” and leaves him to his own devices. This is the end result - unorthodox and impractical, but most likely surprisingly effective.
Conclusion? Carruthers is trying his best and he just wants a break and he’s not very smart but he tries hard, and we as a fandom need to love him more.
Everyone has a weak spot.

This took me SO long, I am SO proud of it. If you enjoy it, reblog it so that others can see it, please?
And I hope you guys like it!
“I daresay I want it as badly as you,” Holmes said softly as Watson grimaced, not wanting to be patronized. “But I am your friend, and I love you – and I wouldn’t want you to regret it.”
“Well you know, I fancy a man in uniform.”
It was an innocuous comment made over canapes at Mrs. Appleby’s luncheon, some silly little relatable tidbit that had the girls laughing – but Watson knew well enough that nothing Holmes ever said was without implication. And it wasn’t that Mr. Appleby looked particularly dashing in the austere military portrait over the piano – oh no. Watson knew that.
But to him a uniform was nothing. Half the time his own was splattered in blood or halfway off as he drug a wounded soldier through the trenches. To Watson, the acts a man accomplished were far more important than the clothes he wore. He was aware this was not the opinion of the military at large but he didn’t much think of himself a military man – he was a doctor. And so pulling out his uniform once more was uncomfortable for no other reason than that he didn’t see the point. What about this particular article of clothing made him more attractive than any other distinctive coat?
Still, he was aware of Holmes’ little games, and he indulged when it suited him – and now, it quite literally did.
Holmes was sitting at his desk when Watson walked in and he didn’t even look up to greet him, just threw him a casual “good morning.” So Wason cleared his throat.
