If you're looking for a dog who is high energy but not anxious and generally very loving I would recommend Goldens. I have worked with Goldens as therapy dogs for 8 years now, and they are lovely. They do like physical touch though - leaning on you/sitting on you etc (as you may be aware from your pupper). When I'm feeling anxious I find that physical contact soothing, but I know it's not for everyone.
Another dog to consider would be a collie of some sort. Highly trainable, very smart, very snuggly, but they are SUUUUPER energetic and need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to keep them from being naughty.
The other issue with Goldens is health. They are extremely prone to cancer, so going through a breeder is the best bet since you can thoroughly vet their lines and make sure you're getting a healthy dog.
Physical contact from dogs (not people) is soothing for me unfortunately... goldens get on my nerves. They’re great dogs just... idk. I’ve gotten to know two pretty well, one I dogsat for two weeks, one is at work, and they’re both............. idk. My reaction is “nah”.
I like goldendoodles but at some point it makes more sense to just get a poodle.
I have considered rough collies!!! The problem there is hair and timing--my grandpa is allergic, so if my living situation has me at home a lot, that won’t work. Also I know rough collies are pretty badly overbred thanks to Lassie syndrome, so it may be harder to find a well bred one.
