The Kappa is a creature in Japanese Folklore. In places where it is rumoured to roam, warning signs have been placed to ward away children and tourists. Kappa's are water demons with incredible elastic arms. They lure people to their pools and drown them to eat them. This drawing is of a Kappa that was supposedly captured on a beach in Japan in 1836. According to the records at the time, this kappa was 1 meter long, weighing 45 kg and had a bent neck and protruding chest. THE WHITE RIVER MONSTER - Pictured is a northern section of the White River located near the small town of Cotter, Arkansas. Arkansas monster lore tells tale of a “boxcar-sized,” grayish-white, manatee-like creature - or fish - that has swum the tributaries of the White River as far back, perhaps, as the mid-1800s. The first recorded eye-witnessed encounters began in 1915 near the White River town of Newport, further to the south - with reports (numbering in the hundreds) peaking in 1937 during a “Monster Hunting Frenzy” throughout the River Region. The Unknown Cryptid, which came to be known as “Whitey,” has been alleged to have been seen over the subsequent decades along various portions of the river. Enough anecdotal accounts accumulated to back this folk-tale to spur the Arkansas legislature to enact the 1973 White River Monster Refuge Law which makes it illegal to harm the legendary creature believed to lurk the darkest waters of the White River. Spinosaurus aegyptiacus is probably my favorite dinosaur. Our understanding of this dinosaur has changed drastically over the century since its discovery. It has gone from standard theropod with a sail on its back to a giant amphibious super-predator, and now it is believed to likely have lived almost exclusively in the estuaries of what is now North Africa. It could possibly have grown over fifty feet in length, and weighed a dozen tons. There were several gigantic fish in its environment, along with huge crocodiles and large theropods on the shores. A possible bite mark has been shown on the vertebral sail of one skeleton, suggesting it may have had a violent clash with a predator like Carcharodontosaurus. With dense bones, Spinosaurus would have likely been a sinker rather than a floater like most theropods. It had powerful legs, and although they were too short to have been effective on land, I imagine it could have run rapidly on the bottom of rivers and lakes like a hippo. With a stabilizing 'keel' on its back, it could have cruised at an horrifying speed. Creatures floating on the surface might not have seen it charging from the floor of the estuary. I've given it algae on its back like a manatee for a degree of camouflage and slightly shortened the tail compared to most reconstructions (*if* it ran on the ground a long tail would have caused a lot of drag). To my knowledge the full tail hasn't been discovered. Although it is safer to assume the tail would have a length more consistent with the likes of Baryonyx, it was fun to consider the possibility given the proposed lifestyle.Cheers!-Keenan

Inktober day 16 — Shellycoat. The Scottish and Northern English folklore, a shellycoat is a type of spirit that haunts rivers and streams and is a type of bogle. The name comes from the coat of shells these creatures are said to wear, which rattle upon movement. Shellycoats are considered to be relatively harmless; they may mislead wanderers, particularly those they think are trespassing upon the creature's territory, but without malice.
