Spending nights out with her, following her advice when it came to drinking and partying in Seoul, he fell for her along the way but he pretended it was the alcohol. Eventually, he knew it was genuine attraction.

Since they met, Rome's been convinced there's a chemistry between them and while she is hesitant to even look at him as far as he knows, he was insistent that she should take a chance on him.

Expanding on his stubbornness when it came to convincing Sunyoung to date him and love him, he plans on telling their son one day the brilliant way he tricked her into being with him: starting small. Truth is, he was greedy. He wanted every part of her life, small and big. Tomorrow and every day after that for the rest of their lives.

When Rome and Sunyoung's relationship was revealed by Dispatch, Rome wasted no time showing her off but fans say it was obvious he admired her prior to the truth coming out. It took a long period of time for some of his fans to accept his relationship but seeing how affectionate he was towards her in fancams and social media, it was hard not to find it endearing.

` making small talk — shindong&amber

Since Lily was going to be meeting up with a friend of hers who was vacationing in California with her family, she had the bright idea of Amber and said friend's husband to spend time together. Sure, Amber was a fairly extroverted individual, but she didn't do well in situations where she was not-so-subtly forced to make small talk.

But nonetheless, here they were, sitting in Lily and Amber's living room. It was completely silent, with Amber scrambling for something to say. She cleared her throat awkwardly, shifting where she sat, and then absentmindedly scratched the back of her neck. Her search of interesting conversation came up blank, as it had been for a short while now. Not even surprising.

She found herself wondering, what would Lily do in such a situation? Probably be very polite, offer something to eat or drink... oh. Right. She had yet to do that.

"Uh, do you want anything? Like, to eat or drink?" she asked the man politely. Thank God she still remembered Korean even after four years of living in the States, though her accent was pretty bad, the syllables heavy and awkward on her tongue. Oh well-- she doubted that Boah and Shindong knew English. Hadn't Lily mentioned in passing once that they didn't?

They probably didn't, she decided, and then focused instead on Shindong's response.

` beauty in the breakdown ( au ) ii

"so have you decided when you're leaving for cali?"

they're in amber's apartment, sitting on her couch and watching some random reality show. the trainee tries to imagine herself on it as one of the idols forced to because of a schedule, tired to the bone but pretending to be happy and excited for...whatever the hell this show is about, all so they can spend a meager amount of time telling the viewers about their newest album or new hit single. she's trying and she's failing miserably.

jinri, turning away from the tv and being the only participant actually watching with rapt attention, smiles. "some time late next week, it looks like. i still need to pack my stuff and say some goodbyes."

if she hadn't been so nervous, the trainee would have laughed at how taken aback the actress looked right then. "w-what?" she sputters.

"i want to go with you. to cali," amber says carefully, much slower, words enunciated. every syllable feels like an escape, a closely guarded secret finally revealed and taken off of her shoulders.

"i couldn't ask you to do that, amber," the brunette says, slowly shaking her head. "i--your training! you're finally a trainee now, what you've wanted! i couldn't let you give up on that because of me."

"who says i'm doing it for you?" she says with a grin. she sighs, however, when jinri frowns at her. "look, what you told me earlier... it made sense to me. how no matter what might have happened, you would have ended up in cali. and to be honest, i don't really want to be an idol. being a trainee is hard enough; i can't imagine what it would be like to sign five-seven years of my life away."

the actress huffs at this. "that's just cold feet talking."

amber raises a brow. "i'm pretty sure that only happens when you're about to get married," she says dryly. "and anyway, i have been thinking about this even before i became a trainee. so i'm not doing this out of pity or because for the moment i don't want to be an idol. i've had time to think about this, jinri. and this is what i want."

she stares at her, silently. her eyes seem to almost be etching her face, her gaze is so intent. "so why now? why did you decide to go back to the states now?"

the trainee shrugs her shoulders. "you inspired me to stop daydreaming of it and make it a reality." a slow grin worms its way along her lips. "plus, the diets i'm supposed to be on are killing me."

jinri sputters out a laugh. "alright, fine. i believe you," she says. "it's not like you need my blessing or whatever, but yeah-- let's go back to cali together." however, even though she says this, there is a tightening around her eyes that indicates she still doesn't quite believe her. amber sighs and decides to ignore it. for now.

"awesome," she says. "my parents probably will say 'i told you so' when i tell them, but whatever. guess they're right this time. what else is new?"

the actress (soon to be ex-actress?) covers her mouth as she giggles, and they go back to watching the show. amber finally decides to pay attention to it, her mind on nothing else but how stupid scripted shows could be.

two peas in a pod ( au ),

slim digits absently combed through her dark hair, pulling the coarse tendrils into her own half-hearted rendition of a bun as she lazes from one end of her home to the other. her unmade-face finally at ease. the apartment was much quieter than usual thanks to taeho's timely exhaustion which ended with him falling asleep somewhere in their room on one of the beds that they had somehow smushed into the master. it was getting late, and as much as jihyun enjoyed the silence of their home (something that had lately come to be such a rarity), she knew that it wasn't going to be much of a delight when it became 1am, and taeho's as energetic as those battery-operated toy puppies.

a buzzing sound detours her from her trip to the bedroom. her steps becoming backtracked as she goes from the hallway and back to the main-entrance where the alert was coming from. the lcd screen paired with the phone to announce guests lit up immediately, a duo of familiar faces appearing just as jihyun picked up the phone to speak to the visitors. "hey," a soft smile curves on her lips at the sight. "come on up, i just need to wake taeho." returning the receiver to its holder, jihyun unlocks the door before disappearing back down the hall.

her ventures taking her to the bedroom where her three-year old son lay, his small form hidden beneath the dim-lighting of the room and the bound of blankets she had placed upon him earlier that evening. "taeho," a hand moves against his back, rubbing the male awake. "taeho, you have a special guest waiting for you outside." she can see the boy stirring, eyes shifting as tiny fists rise to knock into jihyun's shoulder. it was obvious that he was becoming disgruntled due to the intrusion of his slumber. "uncle rome and kanjoonie are here!" it seemed those two names did the trick because as soon as she said them, his eyes opened, a small yawn slipping from his lips as he sat up.

it all begins four years ago, with jinri's shaky hand wordlessly passing her a stick adorned with a pink stripe. amber runs a hand along the plane of the other's back; feels the ridges of her spine contract as she places her face in her hands, listens quietly as she begins. i wasn't on the pill for a week; god maybe the condom broke some time then. oh god how do i tell jonghyun? what's going to happen to my career? what do i say to my parents?

there isn't much amber can say to make her feel better, because the situation is one that likely won't have a good outcome. she can feel anxiety brewing in her gut, skin breaking out in goosebumps, but she swallows these questions and doubts down and tells her in a quiet, soothing voice--one even she did not know she had--that everything is going to be okay, even as her cantankerous thoughts swell and fester in the back of her throat.

amber holds jinri to her for hours, feeling tears slide down the column of her neck until the actress' body wracks in sobs but no sound leaves her, as if she has run out of tears and love and hope. they spend the night like this, having fallen asleep on her ratty, uncomfortable sofa who knows when. amber makes breakfast and attempts small talk, jinri trying and failing to maintain liveliness.

though the blonde suggests her staying over for a while, jinri has a schedule to adhere to. so she straightens her back, tilts her chin up, and leaves the apartment. amber watches the parking lot from her window, how jinri stops in front of her car, keys in hand, and the strong stem of her spine wilts as a hand comes up to cup her face. her shoulders shake tremendously. the trainee turns away and finds her hands clenched into trembling fists.

"i'm going to have it," jinri says resolutely over take-out at dinner time, even though both of them are on strict diets. are supposed to be, anyway. "i mean, i know it's illegal not to, but... i want to have it. even if i could...abort it."

amber stares down at her miso soup before finally asking the question practically burning her mouth (though that was probably just the hot sauce), "do you know if you'll put it up for adoption?"

"i'm going to have it," jinri repeats, tone softer, her eyes searing into her own. and that's all she has to say, because she understands.

they manage to keep it quiet, surprisingly enough. jinri won't show for a good while yet, but the elephant in the room is obvious: what is she going to do when she does? how long will she wait until she has to tell her manager, her parents, her fans?

it's a month in to her pregnancy when they finally have proper time to meet. jinri comes to her place, large shades on and hood up so as not to draw attention from fans or those knowing of her celebrity status. they sit down for a bit, eating the take-out the actress has brought with her, when she blurts out, "i told my my manager."

there is no need for her to elaborate. "you told him? really?" she breathes. "whoa. uh, how'd it go?"

she lets out a breath. "well, obviously he didn't really take it all too well at first. but he said we'd talk more about it after i wrapped up the drama i'm working on right now. after talking with the pr management, they're...well, giving me maternity leave."

amber's eyebrows shoot up. "really? they're not gonna fire you or anything?"

jinri giggles at that; bright, tinkling laughter that makes the blonde's ears heat up from embarrassment. "no, no. that would cause too much of a scandal-- the opposite of what we're going for. the contract is, obviously, going to be upheld throughout the leave. but i doubt they're going to sign me up when it expires. when the media finds out, it's going to be insane."

she winces at that, silently agreeing. unplanned pregnancies, especially when the woman in question isn't married, would not go well in the states, much less such a conservative country as south korea. the backlash, anti-fans and netizens alike bad-mouthing jinri without even understanding her situation makes the trainee inexplicably angry. she breathes out slowly, however, and simply nods her head in understanding.

and that's when she realizes what this means for jinri's future. "wait. so, if the contract expires and the company doesn't take you on...then--"

"yeah," she says, nodding with a small, bittersweet smile. "no more choi jinri, the korean american actress."

amber blinks. she's taking it much better than she thought. her thoughts flash to the scene she had intruded upon in the parking lot; jinri with her wilted back and her wilted dreams. then again, a month has passed since they have properly talked. that left the actress with a lot of time to think.

"so, what are you going to do?"

jinri licks her lips and lets out a slow breath, hunching over the table. her chopsticks halfheartedly poke at her food. "well, i mean, the only actual thing tying me here had been my career. and now that that chapter of my life is definitely over for good..."

"you're going to move." it's not a question, because she knows.

she nods, tucking back the loose hair that flops into her line of sight. "yeah. go back to cali. it was really the only place that held only good memories for me. no bullying, no mistreatment... south korea will always be special to me, but cali was always my home. now i'm just-- going back. like how i was always supposed to, i think."

and this is when jinri says something that resonates with her; words running through her veins like wildfire and making every strand of hair stand on end: "i mean, it probably sounds dumb, but i feel like no matter what might have happened...even if i didn't get pregnant, even if jonghyun didn't leave me...i would have ended up in cali anyway. right where i started. where i've always belonged."

it is almost as if a switch has been flipped inside of her. amber stares down at the pop drink sitting half-empty in front of her with pursed lips. she faintly hears her name being called, only snapping out of her daze when cool fingers lightly touch the exposed skin of her shoulder. it's jinri, shaking her as if back into existence, skin brushing hers thanks to the thin strap of her tank top.

"you alright, amber? zoned out on me for a moment there. am i that boring?" the brunette jokes with a kind smile, though her eyes remain pinched in worry.

she snorts at that but smiles reassuringly. "yeah, you are," she replies, laughing louder when jinri shoves lightly at her with a gasp, pouting childishly. then she digs in the take-out with more relish and they move on to lighter subjects. amber's training, how it's going, when she thinks she will debut-- carefully keeping away from jinri's life and the life now growing inside of her.

but even when jinri leaves the apartment with a cheery wave and the front door is locked, amber's body leaning heavily against it, the cogs are turning.

and the countdown has begun.

"i may not be the perfect mother but i am a mother."

the disbelief that drew the expressions from her blanched appearance were growing thin as she stared at the papers in her hands, the obvious baby-monitor in her lap allowed the room to hear the baby happily playing in his playroom that jihyun had personally had built for the child.

"he came from me. i don't care what his father says -- he can't just fucking walk out and take him." the papers that were sent over were thrown back to the table, flying every which way as jihyun disregarded them entirely. the proposal to take her to court not at all scaring her. "if he wants to take taeho, he'll have to do it over my dead  fucking corpse." there was no way that jihyun was giving away her child to that son-of-a-bitch ex-husband of hers. the receiver on the other line's voice did nothing but irritate her, not at all helping her case as she continued to drill out the clauses and such of which pertained to their case. by now, jihyun had had enough.

she had thought that once february had come around, she would be done with that asshole but no -- here he was, several months later sending her notices about trying to take custody of her child. the child that she had spent most of their married life trying to conceive. "no, no. i don't want to talk about this right now, call me later." not finding reason upon waiting for the receiving answer, fingers pressed 'end' without a second thought, jihyun was done as done as could be at that point. the ringing in her ears kept her stationed, stable and distraught, unsure of what to do now.

the faint sounds of toddler babble float around the room from the baby monitor, the only sign of life that wasn't as frustrated and miserable as jihyun was leading on. it seemed to be the only thing that was keeping jihyun as sane as she was at that point. rounding the corner, baby monitor tucked in one hand, dark eyes watch her son from the side. his little three-year old form bounding from one part of the room to the other, his indecisiveness tearing into his want to play. just as she was about to go inside, the sound of the doorbell cuts into her movements. a ripple of motions begin, both mother and son  turn their heads in reaction to the doorbell, mirroring several expression of confusion.

sunyoung smiles lightly as she turns her head, eyes casting downward to look at her little boy who had been constantly asking about the playground since his shining little eyes set eyes on the equipment, even from the distance. currently sandwiched in between her and his father as the trio walked hand in hand, sunyoung was glad that the park was within walking distance of their home -- because she knew if kangjoon had to wait at least five more minutes longer he would have started squirming, wriggling, and doing everything in his power to get him closer to him closer to what he wanted. his impatience always made her laugh -- she wasn't sure if he got that from her or rome.

releasing the small child's hand from her own, she used the same hand to slightly ruffle the hair that rome worked to perfect as her eyes flickered to the man next to him, searching his face for any sign that he would say no. "yeah joonie, we're here. make sure you don't get those little jordan's of yours dirty or your daddy will probably faint ~" she giggles as she watches the boy's eyes light up before running in full force towards the swings. cutting her eyes over to her boyfriend, the giggles turn into a small laugh, eyes crinkling into half moons over her comment as sunyoung slips her palm into his and laces their fingers tenderly. "what?" innocence is feigned on her features as she pulls him over to a spot that was close enough that they could keep a good eye on kangjoon, but far away enough that he wouldn't get grossed out by their actions, "don't act like you wouldn't a little sad if he got his precious hypebeast clothes dirty." a quick kiss on the cheek is given as a form of a 'just kidding' apology as they settle in place.
