SEPTEMBER 2019 EVALUATIONS. ✰ song. DESTINY by park bo ram and basick — MAN to MAN OST performed with park chanyeol ♡
“ promise me one thing, even if things are really hard. sometimes like a friend, sometimes like a lover, always be by my side “
what is mildly dangerous might as well be one of the best things she had ever pushed herself to do.
when they planned to work on this month’s evaluation together, jisoo knew that they would be trudging through perilous waters. after all, nothing is quite as dangerous as performing a love song with your boyfriend of one year in front of a panel of coaches who are persistent in perpetuating a no-dating culture amongst their trainees. she has already weighed upon the pros and cons of the situation—understood exactly what they are getting themselves into. they have prepared themselves accordingly and more than anything, she’s ready to get their show on the road.
she does not mean to sound utterly lovesick and disgustingly sweet but the female does feel something different about performing with chanyeol. perhaps it is in the way that she feels more warm hearted or the fact that she feels a stronger connection to this song than any other performance she has done in the past. it speaks more to her than anything else and she attributes it to his presence; steady and unwavering beside her. as her worries come to pass, she feels as they both present a strong front. as equals, they stand together and became a power to overcome.
the song was a little too upbeat for her tastes but she supposes with the lyrics and the message of the song, it all fits perfectly. as their music filters through the speakers, she cannot help but smile. playing it off casually, she holds on to her mic and glances at him before she starts.
i confess to the sunny sky i remember you, love at first sight like destiny, like my prayers you came right before me i wore pretty clothes for you today with the prettiest smile in the world i’ll go to you with a trembling heart love you
it was a relatively easy song to sing and did not require much from her vocal prowess. she ways her body to the melody, maintains eye contact with their audience, and made sure to peek a smile every now and then to fully flesh out the emotions of the song. when chanyeol starts to wrap, she puts her hand down and watches him immerse himself in the performance. in a lot of ways, the lyrics are more or less them just speaking to each other. they way they wore their heart on their sleeves for this performance shows in the actions that may seem rehearsed but are actually not. it shows in the sparkle behind her eyes and in the relaxed way that she moves her body to the music. as though they can be facing the harshest of critics but she would still feel undaunted because she was with him.
they have practices the song several times throughout the month but she’s still impressed by his talents and the way it all comes naturally for him. each time that he performs his verses, she’s captured by his inherent talent so much that this time, she has to physically pull herself away from staring. it’s damning but she has to do what she has to do. instead, she plays it out as she waits for her verse to arrive. smiling, swaying, a few short glances, and then finally, she puts the mic to her lips.
the chorus repeats and she sings the same lines. it comes with the same amount of ease and she closes her eyes in some parts to get a better feel of it. afterwards, it’s another one of his rap verse. she keeps a better resolve this time, puts her acting talents into magnificent use as she acts as nonchalantly as possible. as if they’re just two friends, just friends, deciding to share the stage together.
promise me one thing even if things are really hard sometimes like a friend, sometimes like a lover always be by my side
as she sings the bridge, jisoo faces him completely. just like the rest of their performance, there is an underlying message in there somewhere. stay with me, let’s be strong together and we’ll figure out the rest as it comes. she hits the high note from her core, pulling the mic away a little as she puts her effort into making it sound wonderfully. once it’s done, she smiles successfully and pauses before she moves into singing the last two verses.
in under four minutes, the performance that gave them the excuse to meet each other in practice rooms for the entire month comes to an end. it is a little bittersweet to think that it’s over, given that she has enjoyed it a lot. while this would not be the end of their collaborations, jisoo knew that they could not do this as frequently as they would like. for the time being, they are back to brushing shoulders in the seocho building, stealing glances, and exchanging words that wouldn’t have other people giving them looks of suspicion.
it’s all and well. after all, they have the weekend in each other’s arms to look forward to.
