She's never sure how she knows when he needs her but Family envelopes him into a hug, smoothing her hand up and down his spine.

“Hi.” He muttered, leaning down to pull her tightly against him. He wasn’t sure how she’d picked up on his dour mood, but he was glad to have her there. “It’s not--” He took a deep breath. “It’s not a good day.” His voice was steady, his eyes dull and dry, but his chest hurt like there was something broken. He leaned into her, drawing warmth and comfort, unwilling to face the day ahead of him without some level of support.

" Do you ever think about what it'd be like if we were together?" Her voice is quiet in the darkness. Rangiku isn't sure if he's sleep, but he seems to be. His face buried in her neck, arms tight around her. She allows herself a small, fond smile as she combs her fingers through his hair. " I still believe I wouldn't be good for you. Shuu, you deserve so much more than me. I want you to be happy, I want you to smile and laugh more, and you don't do that as often and it breaks my heart..."

Shuuhei stirs at her voice, but doesn’t open his eyes. He’s drowsy, and listening to her talk is relaxing. He pulls a little closer to her, nuzzling at her neck. It is safe here. It’s warm and soft. He could practically hear the tears in her words, though. He thinks about them being together sometimes. He thinks about them dying, too. It seems like a bad idea, for two people who had been so hurt, that would just cause each other more agony. 

“I love you, Ran.” He mumbles into her neck. “But you know why we can’t do this.” Because I love you too much. Because you were hurt too badly to feel the same way. “Go to sleep, okay?” He brushes a kiss to her neck, settles against her body. She liked to sleep the same way he did-- so curled up and tangled in each other that they could feel each other’s nightmares before they woke up screaming, that they could be assured that the other was alive and safe. 

“You’ll feel better in the morning.” He murmured. He squeezed her a little tighter. Things always looked better by daylight, and the sky was just beginning to turn grey in anticipation of a new sunrise.
