Welcome to RNM Comment Bingo How To! For 5 days, your faithful mods are highlighting a different row on the bingo card, with suggestions for where to get started in filling it in. This series will break that 25 square buffet of amazing fics into some smaller bites, for folks who aren’t sure where to get started.
Remember: to count towards the prizes, comments have to be posted between January 3, 2021 and January 17, 2021 (see the long form rules here). If you just can’t help yourself and comment early, that’s great! More comments! That’s what it’s all about.
Alright, today we’re handling the first 5 squares:
Comment on an AU fic: Not all people who write AU’s use that tag, but you can find a good starter list of 800+ Roswell New Mexico fics tagged as Alternate Universes (note, this includes all of the different AU options, not just people who tag with “Alternate Universe” -- here’s a bit more on how that works). Want to find an AU fic with no comments? Here’s the search. Want to find an AU fic with the most comments? Here’s the search.
Respond to someone else’s comment: Other than being polite, there’s nothing stopping you from responding to someone’s comment -- see a meta someone wrote in a tags? Introduced you to a new genre? They pulled a quote that made you giggle? Did it teach you something not covered in sex ed? Let the commenter know they made your day!
Comment on a podfic: We’ve only got 10 podfics in the fandom, and the amazing Cath has performed 3 of them. If you’re inspired to record a podfic, you can always look in a writer’s Ao3 profile to see if they have a standard transformative works policy -- here’s a good example. Otherwise, you can ask and most folks would be delighted.
Comment on a fic with <10 kudos: At time of writing, there’s 188 fics with fewer than 10 kudos; some are new, some are old, some are shy, and some are bold. Mind the tags and enjoy!
Comment on world-building: There’s no one tag or search to find fics that would make you want to comment on the world-building, but it’s one of the things writers spend a huge amount of time and emotional labor over. So if you feel transported by the world or entranced by the accuracy; if you can smell the desert or taste the blood, let the author know!
Can you help? Reply to this post with a link to a fic you think qualifies as one of the above -- write a review, share the love!
