Chapter 8
The door slamming shut behind them made Alex wince, Maria’s state of mind evident in the forcefulness of the action. Alex let out a hard breath. Not sure how it felt, to be so suddenly left out. The sound of footsteps caught his attention. Guerin heading off to the Airstream, shoulders hunched as if expecting an axe to fall any minute. “Guerin.” Alex called. It looked, for a moment, like Michael would ignore him. But after another couple steps, Michael paused, looking back over his shoulder. Expectant. Guarded. Alex couldn’t blame him. “Wait here,” Alex half-ordered Flint, heading over to Michael. Realizing that they were just out of earshot of Flint, if they were quiet. “Are you okay?” Michael scoffed softly. “What do you think?”
