Before closing out our latest Artist Disclosure feature with Shadow of Whales, we sent over some questions about what they’ve been up to, how Patreon works, and some future goals they have. Check out the full interview below!
1. Hey guys! Let’s get started by introducing everyone and their role in the band.
HEY :D How's it going?
Joshua Flores - Lead Singer / Rhythm Guitar
Chris Fraga - Lead Guitar
JD Vazquez - Keys / Misc
Caleb Flores - Drums
Jeremy Boyum - Bass
2. Shadow of Whales started back in 2013, and has gained a lot of momentum since then, making an appearance on KTBC –FOX 7, and having praising sung about your debut EP. How have you been able to keep that momentum going strong?
Anything and everything I guess haha.
There are still a ton of people who haven't heard our music so most every day is about finding new people and new ears to listen to it. That and producing as much online content as we possibly can to keep the folks that live farther away involved in what we are doing day to day. We are actually working up a bunch of new content for our YouTube channel to give people a closer look into who we are and what we are capable of. It's going to be a lot of fun.
3. You guys have music on regular rotation at Starbucks. Have you ever walked into one to hear your song playing?
We haven't actually haha, but we had a lot of fans tell us about it and snapchat it, tweet it, instagram it and what not so that was equally if not more awesome than if we were to walk in and hear it ourselves.
4. Once a month, you’ve been releasing a new song on a site called Patreon. Can you tell us a little about what that is exactly, and what made you decide to release music through it?
Patreon is a site for creators to create and for fans to donate and become more involved with what is being created.
So essentially, for us you can think of our Patreon as more an exclusive membership club where you can be more involved with what we're doing and can get more access to sweet things that aren't available to the general public. We will release some/most/maybe all of the songs we're releasing each month at the end of the year to the public but you can get early access by subscribing for $1 or more per month. In addition to the music, you can be included in the content we release on our YouTube, can get exclusive photos, exclusive calendars that tell you what shows we're playing before anyone else, early access to broadcasts, exclusive merch, exclusive videos/behind-the-scenes, exclusive vinyls, etc. We’ve packed a lot into this thing for our fans. We really wanted to take our fans to the next level with us and we felt this was the best way to make that happen.
Furthermore, and really most importantly, our whole existence is centered around encouraging and inspiring as many people as we possibly can; spreading hope and love as far as sound can reach. Our end-goal with this is to get one step closer to getting further outside Texas so we can meet, encourage, and inspire more people with our music. That's really what this is all about for us.
5. Do you guys have any upcoming plans you can share with us?
>:) maybe... *maniacal laugh*
We're planning some great shows, I won't give details to you before our Patrons but we are planning ;)
Like I said before we are producing a lot more content for our online channels (our YouTube specifically) than we ever have and we are really excited for where it is going. One piece in particular will be an animated series that JD is working on. We've just about finished the pilot episode, we've started filming some other sketches and are going to be doing some more in depth original and cover music acoustically. Stay tuned ;)
6. What is one thing you hope to see Shadow of Whales accomplish in the next three years?
In the next three years we hope to be off the ground. By off the ground I mean in a different country.
Huge thanks to Shadow Of Whales for taking time to answer our questions! We can’t wait to see what’s next from you guys!
