Lots of animals are on the move right now! This adorable porcupine family crossing the road at Denali National Park & Preserve in Alaska is a good reminder to drive slowly and be aware of other travelers. Porcupining to know more facts about these awesome mammals? Contrary to popular belief, porcupines don't shoot their quills. When threatened, they turn their backs and swish their tails vigorously-- those quills detach easily. Around March, porcupine moms give birth to a single baby. The new porcupines are born with soft quills that harden quickly, affording them protection soon after birth. While visiting places during this time, it's an excellent strategy to pretend everyone you see is a porcupine and give them plenty of space. It's pointless to get prickly when there's plenty of room for all. Photo by Alex VanDerStuyf, National Park Service.
