Like, Hiccup and Astrid are careful (and when you have enough kids you gotta plan shit like that) but all they have is their loft and not so many doors, if and when they do it in the house.

Are there modern versions of Alivia, Garik, Roan and Lund?

Okay, so Alivia is like Valka in her wild, free-spirited, activist manner, though she’s also loyal and loving and very much involved with her biological father’s life. She got a bachelors degree slowly, you know, as she blipped around and took dozens “breaks”--working or traveling.

Garik straight up went from bachelors to masters. He was on the debate team, like his mother, though far more easy going in manner. Speaking was his forte and he knew it. He went into social sciences, then into law.  He was only pulled off course of his rigid academic schedule by his older half-sister.

Roan got an associates degree and went into masonry. He always loved working with his hands. He went to vocational school and got into college on an athletic scholarship. Football. He mooched and hooked up with his half-sister’s agenda as well. The three of them had two memorable experiences together: backpackng around Europe for two months and a three week trip across the US. It cost them money, a shit ton of money, but they wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Garik started a political career and Roan settled down and married by the time he was 23, but Lund? Lund was the baby. He moved abroad and lived with Alivia in Paris for a year. Then he taught ESL in three different Asian countries. He’s the child their parents never see and only came back when his mother got sick.

My child

Hiccup drummed charcoal smudged fingers across the blueprints so that soft dots outlined the project like flower petals.  His tongue twisted in his mouth as he stared and thought. The new dragon Berk recently acquired was a misery to design saddles for, but the vision was clear in his head. He just had to work out the kinks and it would be possible. Finding a rider to test it out would prove more difficult.

He might have already completed the basic outline if he were in his room at the forge.  But Garik had an ear infection and Astrid put her foot down on late nights out.  She was right, of course.  The saddle wasn’t even a priority to the village, simply a priority to him. Something he had to get out of his head before the working concept slipped away.

He had so many other things to plan and do and think about. His mind never slept.  Crap, he nearly forgot—

He felt the tug on his clothes, felt his chair wobble on uneven legs (still had to fix that, he’d get to it next week), and then tiny hands were on his neck, in his hair, a weight thrown against his shoulders as a four-year-old climbed his back.

“Astrid,” Hiccup called, calmly.  He wrote the equations of the neck harness, hoping his measurements would pan out in practice.

The child giggled in his ear.  He’d reached Hiccup’s head, wrist-sized knee-caps digging against the tendons around his spine. Hiccup’s neck bent with the added weight, but he continued to work.  He had to. 

Truthfully he was supposed to be repairing that windmill Rimbuck Grunnarson flew into, with a stronger design to the foundation.  Kid was an idiot, though Hiccup couldn’t say as much out loud.  One of the harder lessons of being chief.

There was a bang upstairs.  Then crying.  Astrid’s “Garik! What are you—” was drowned out by a particularly loud wail.

“Astrid,” Hiccup said again, louder.

“I’m a little busy,” she shouted down.

The boy bounced on his shoulders and started slapping his forehead like it was the flanks of a horse.

Hiccup winced. “Easy-easy!” He hissed, though his charcoal stick still flew across parchment.

“Play now, daddy.”

Hiccup reached up and rubbed Roan’s mop of Stoick-red hair.

“No,” he said, distracted, “Daddy can’t.  Astrid!”

He heard hushing—Garik’s cries, for whatever he had run into, had turned to sniffles—and then thuds, trailing across the overhead floorboards until her her head popped over the top two stairs, hair loose and cheeks flushed.

“Hiccup, I really can’t right now—”

“Do you want to go to the Intertribal Races? ” he interrupted.  “It’s hosted by the Meatheads this year.”

Astrid blinked. The indignation melted from her face. “Oh. Ah…”

“Mom! My head feels wet! Am I bleeding?”

She turned over her shoulder and shouted, “You shouldn’t have been climbing while you were sick!”

“It’ll only be for a week,” Hiccup supplied helpfully. “We’ll leave the kids with mom—”

The reply came quick: “Yeah.  Yeah, that sounds good.”

She retreated back to the loft, likely to tend to the wetness of Garik’s head.  Then returned.

“That’s a good look for you.”

“Thanks,” Hiccup said, eyes back on his work.

Roan laughed and yanked his father’s hair.

“That’s it—”

Then came the squealing and shrieks of delight as Roan was lifted and held upside-down, a euphony to his brother’s crying just a floor above.  It was the sort of music parents took vacations from, but never regretted filling their house with.

Hiccup's two ginger babies are off to avenge him.

I'm not sure what happened to Hiccup. I think he's in a coma from something. But basically, his kids are about to uncover some mysteries and jump into some supernatural shenanigans, as usual.

HTTYD 4

How to Train your Dragon meets Brothers Grimm meets Supernatural.

Two brothers and their half-sister travel the Barbaric Archipelagoes in search for the truth and end up finding more than dragons.

Background:

It’s twenty six years after the Red Death is defeated and the dragon population in the Barbaric Archipelagoes has dwindled by half.  Human-dragon bonds grow rare.  Most have flown off, back into the skies or the seas.  Hiccup (age 41) puts as much effort and time as he can into investigating the anomaly, outside of running a village.   His three eldest children decide to take over as he’s burdened by their grandfather’s ailing health.  So while Hiccup’s busy ruling Berk and keeping tabs on what dragons do remain in the Barbaric Archipelagoes, his children are out doing what he wished he could be doing--with a little more fun added into the mix.

The parents:

Astrid (42), of course, blames the wanderlust of Garik (21) and Roan (19) on the influence of their sister, Alivia (23).  Garik was responsible, Roan was strong, a fighter, and both were fine Hooligans.  Alivia would visit often, regale them with exaggerated tales of all she had encountered, until one day the boys decided to go with her.  The addicting lifestyle keeps them from home, much to Astrid’s chagrin.  She’s busy enough raising Lund (12) and managing a brewing war with the Murderous Tribe without having to worry about the rest of her children.

Hiccup supports both his sons’ exploration of the world while they have the youth and freedom to do so. He’s also silently happy that Alivia has others with her (she was too independent for her own good) but also worries at the length they’ll be gone.  When he does hear from them, it’s often more worrying.

Plot:

Just because the dragons are gone, doesn’t mean everything else is and the siblings encounter far more than winged lizards. They get suckered into local legends and retrieval quests and every sort of nightmare-inducing bedtime story they heard as children.  It’s on their travels that they run into Tsura, and Garik falls head over heels. ❤

The Siblings can always count on their dad or his friend Fishlegs (41) to help them with information--Fishlegs more the data, Hiccup more the application. However, on more than one occasion, their mothers have had to come and physically bail them out in a tough spot.  Neither Astrid nor Camicazi understand the defenses often used against the supernatural, but they do have a knack for good, old fashioned, physical defense.

Slowly, amidst the vampires and warlocks and curses, they begin to piece together the answer the question: Where have the dragons gone?
