i’ve started listening to a bunch of industry podcasts, and i’d like to recommend one episode of one show in particular: the jasta show ep 356 with guest rob blasko. they’re going into it trying to clear up some industry stuff and it’s fascinating to listen to how two industry professionals reflect on certain issues, and how much nuance they ascribe all the discussed situations. here’s one stand out quote/section:
That guy in Seether, he’s cranking out hits. He has hit upon hit upon hit. Now if I was his manager and I said to him, “Hey, look at how bigger the check would be if you owned your master,” I’d be pissing off a ton of people and then who knows if--if they did the record and they hired the same radio people who did their last album, who knows if they could still get it played? Look what happened with Manson. He went and did a record on his own. It didn’t perform as well as the previous record. I think the record after that was on a traditional label and it performed better than the one he did on his own. So there is no blueprint. There is no set way that works for everybody.
