Single Review: The War on Drugs - “Holding On” b/w “Accidently Like a Martyr”

The War on Drugs won one and lost one on their new Spotify Single.

The stripped-down rendition of “Holding On,” the lead singe from the forthcoming A Deeper Understanding, which comes out Aug. 25, is a vast improvement over the original, busier version and finds singer/multi-instrumentalist Adam Granduciel sounding as if he’s been spending a lot of time with Blonde on Blonde lately. It’s no masterpiece like the songs from Bob Dylan’s 1966 album, but a step up is a step up.

Those same vocal inflections and the band’s dark, moody arrangement; however, do nothing to serve Warren Zevon’s “Accidently Like a Martyr.” An incredibly sad song, Zevon’s version benefits from the juxtaposition of his bright piano chords. Here, the song is just a dirge. And while Zevon’s laconic delivery made the heartbreaking lyrics sound thoughtful and sincere, Granduciel just sounds winy on this ill-advised remake. A step down is simply a step down, but this is a full flight of stairs down.
