I wanted to write something about Provo Wallis being registered as an able seaman on HMS Oiseau at only four years of age by his father (which gave him an astonishing ten years "at sea" by the time he joined a ship as a midshipman), but I'm a little bit distracted by the description of his 1813 portrait by Robert Field on the National Gallery of Canada site:

He wears his naval uniform, to which the gold epaulette adds a touch of military elegance. The sensuality and beauty of his face have been captured with great sensitivity, and his forthright gaze carries assurance and conviction. The richly painted cloud background evokes the subject's naval victories, but also conjures the vigour of his youth.
