robi hager appreciation post!

robi was an original spring awakening ensemble member who also understudied melchior, hanschen, ernst, georg, and otto. he went on for all of those roles except for melchior before leaving the show in august of 2007.

he returned to the show twice: once in august of 2008 as a temporary swing and once in march of 2010 to replace andy mientus as hanschen on the show's first national tour.

there aren't many pictures of him in the show, but he has such an interesting history with spring awakening and deserves to be talked about more!

I still feel sorry for Robi Hager, being one of the original understudies for Melchior on Broadway but never going on in the role (he did got on for Hanschen, Ernst, Georg, and Otto and later replaced Andy Mientus as Hanschen in the first national tour, though, so not so bad in the end.)

There’s video of Robi singing “Totally Fucked” and “Left Behind” and Melchior’s part in “Touch Me” in concert if you want to imagine what never was.

On a side note, it makes me really sad that Robi Hager took over Hanschen so late and there is so little to find about him in the role (though everything I've ever encountered suggests he was excellent.) Almost as sad as I am about him never going on for Melchior despite being one of the original understudies for the role.

Spring Awakening's Broadway Ensemble: Robert "Robi" Hager

Robi was a member of the original Broadway cast of Spring Awakening and understudied Melchior, Hanschen, Ernst, Otto, and Georg. He went on for every one except Melchior. After originally leaving the show in August of 2007, Robi came back to Spring Awakening twice-- once briefly in the ensemble in summer of 2008, and then as Andy Mientus' replacement as Hanschen to close out the first national tour.

After Spring Awakening, Robi also understudied roles in Bye Bye Birdie and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying on Broadway.
