I’ve been a Trekkie all my life. My dad introduced me to TOS, and I imprinted the hardest on TNG during its original run on TV. Jean-Luc Picard is my favorite Enterprise captain and turned me into a fanatical Earl Grey drinker.
So of course I had to watch Star Trek Picard. And imagine how thrilled I was when I found out that Santiago Cabrera was in it - the handsome Chilean who’d played my second favorite Musketeer in the BBC series! It was a win-win situation, and now I have two favorite Star Trek captains: Picard and Cristóbal Rios.
As a result, I had to listen to Rogue Elements which is essentially a prequel to PIC, centering on Ex-Star Fleet pilot Cristóbal Rios. Starting with the acquisition of La Sirena, it's a charming and entertaining romp filled with easter eggs and adventure. It's a story of gangster shenanigans featuring the legendary Iotians from TOS, with Rios caught in the middle and having to wiggle out of one pinch after the other - all the while trying to get his newly acquired but used and junk-filled speed freighter in shape and reluctantly dealing with his crew of emergency holograms.
While I was a bit disappointed that the story leaves out the tragic events on the Ibn Majid and Rios' fall from grace with Starfleet, I got over my disappointment fairly quickly. This isn't a heavy-weighted character exploration of our 'brooding existentialist spaceman' (although Miller takes care to hint at the trauma Rios is still working through). This is a fun ride, a cheerful, fan-ish, quick-paced and colorful space trip that will make you smile and turn the pages fast and - occasionally - even laugh out loud.
The icing on the cake would have been Santiago Cabrera narrating the audiobook. But he's not a professional narrator, and it's an art form that demands expertise. Robert Petkoff has exactly that: he's a seasoned sci-fi narrator and does a great job bringing all the different characters, species and holograms to life. Kudos for pulling off the holo squad's various accents! (Although Petkoff’s Spanish needs some work.) Emil sounds almost as poncy and British as Santi's.
If you read or listen to Rogue Elements, I only have one piece of advice left to give: Lean back and enjoy the ride!

Fates Mates and Podcasts
I’ve started listening to the Fated Mates podcast on Audible with Sarah MacLean and Jen Prokop which is a romance oriented podcast that started out discussing Kresley Cole IAD books and branched out. This is why i started listening . . . I love Kresley Cole. She is a must purchase in multiple formats whenever a new book comes out. Don’t judge me. I need them in physical form for my bookshelf,…

HOLLOW KINGDOM
BY KIRA JANE BUXTON
4¼⭐ | NARRATION 😍 = Amazing | Narrated by 📣 Robert Petkoff
🔦FEATURING ❐ Zombie-ish Apocalypse ❐ From the POV of a Crow named Shit Turd (S.T. for short) ❐ Who cusses like a sailor and loves Cheetos™ ❐ It also features a few other creatures from the animal kingdom
First and foremost, Hollow Kingdom is hilariously funny and full of cuss words, which I had no problem with; but others might. It’s also somewhat irreverent and even melancholy at times and yet it still ended on a hopeful note...at least for the animal race, not so much for the human race, though. What turns the human race into zombie-like beings, I don’t really know to tell you the truth. Something to do with our need to be connected at all times...maybe? Things that make you go hmmm…
I wanted to give it 5 stars but It did make me super sad a couple of times and it might have felt a little stretched out length-wise, plus the ending was hella crazy...like I’m not sure what even fully went down kind of crazy. Overall, I totally recommend this, it’s got this special kind of quality that makes it unlike any other zombie story out there. Also, the narration is top-notch, Robert Petkoff knocked it out of the park with this one.
Happy Trails to the National Touring Company of Fun Home. It’s been an honor and a privilege to see you tell this story across the country. Everything’s alright babe, when we’re together.
