The Big Sheep by Robert Kroese
Challenge: Bestseller from 2016
I don’t really love noir mysteries, but I have a lot of them on my list this year, though I’m not entirely sure why. But if you get some sci-fi in it, I will read it and so I actually specifically asked for a friend to buy me this for my birthday one year and here we are. The story follows Blake Fowler, a hired muscle for a rather bizarre Sherlock-Holmes-type detective named Erasmus Keane. They are sent to hunt down a missing sheep, but why ends up being the more interesting mystery. Throw in competing factions, an even weirder case involving a popular actress, and a whole lot of corporate espionage and you get one of the most engaging noirs I have read in a long time.
I don’t want to give too much away about the book, but there is definitely a super interesting twist that brings up questions of identity and authenticity, and blends the two genres perfect. I haven’t heard if there will be more books featuring these characters (given that there is a big cliffhanger at the end, I would assume so) but if not, this book serves as a sweet, fun little mystery that doesn’t let you go until the very end.
