They have to eat more, drink more, drive more cars, wear out more clothes, and generally enjoy themselves more - and work less. This country is over-producing. Our automatic factories, our robots, are making much too much of everything, and it has to be consumed! Want not, Morrey, waste not."

Some liberties have been taken with the plot from what I remember of it and the ending #Reworked to be more television friendly but this is unmistakably Pohl: simultaneously one of the most politically engaged of the golden age #Sci fi writers and yet one of the most playfully irreverent. The comic nature of the source story has been ramped up and we close out the #First series on an out and out comedy episode. A rare starring role for comic actor (and close friend and ubiquitous costar of Peter #Sellers) Graham Stark who was more often seen in supporting parts. He has a lot of fun here as does the entire cast but the robot outfits #Having been presumably been designed for maximum practicality whilst being easily duplicated and as cheap as possible end up being.. Well #A little creepy to be honest. An odd way to bow out the series but as silly as it is the central point is never lost. Interestingly this #Wasn't an isolated story of Pohl's but a springboard for a whole world of short stories that examine this particular timeline and satirise #Consumerism on industrial scales. Not a patch on The Space Merchants tho which should be required reading for every student of sci fi #So what will (what survives of) series 2 hold for us? Well more women for a start i hope..

We start with Martin Shaw's Monty. A brighter member of the group but not nearly as bright as he thinks he is. The #Most interesting aspect of this ep is tied into the idea that there is acceptable and unacceptable crime; Monty has friends on the outside #Who are happy to see him free and to help if they can. A bankrobber is something of a folk hero. But when Monty turns a gun on a policeman #Everything changes; suddenly nobody wants to know him. Written by series creator Andrew Brown this is a strong second ep anchored by a #Couple of great performances. Brown chooses to explore the world of the policeman's wife as much as that of Monty and it's a clever move #With the contrast and unlikely similarities between the two characters; both are trapped and to some degree controlled by an apparently #Friendly ally. Both have a cynical understanding of the PR machine that jerks into life immediately after the shooting.#And both are relying on the faintest of hopes to buoy them through a period of intense stress. It's a sharp and well executed bit of script
