En 1839, Robert Cornelius installe son appareil photo à l'arrière de l'entreprise de lampes à gaz de son père à Philadelphie, après avoir retiré le cache-objectif, il s'assit pendant plus d'une minute dans la monture, avant de couvrir l'objectif. L'image qu'il réalise est le premier autoportrait photographique.
