DON'T GO GENTLY is a queer retelling of Robin Hood set in a near-future Madison, WI during societal collapse.

If you are desperate to read about a bisexual, camo-wearing, compound bow-wielding Robin Hood taking out “not-so-nice” agents in the beautiful Driftless region of the Great Lakes, well, me too, so hold my beer and watch me full send it.

DGG is as ungovernable as its protagonist—it cannot be contained by the traditional publishing industry’s stifling genre descriptions. It is dystopian AND hopepunk. It is action-packed and deeply thoughtful. The Earth in post-apocalypse is green and thriving. There is a slow-burn romance and love triangle and neither are what you are expecting, trust.

It is also vehemently, proudly, and unapologetically sticks it to the ruling class without pulling any punches. Because Robin would throw the first molotov. ❤️‍🔥

Marian by Ella Lyons

this was a nice book to read in one sitting, honestly.

i love how the author portrays how you can not do much against the injustice of the world and how cruel it can be, especially when you are younger. you will get stronger when you get older, how the strength is shown depends from person to person but i personally loved how ella lyons wrote marian as someone who knew injustice and knew how to help others, all in silence and where nobody knew.

i would have loved to see more of the „steal the rich, help the poor“ scenes.

the book also shows how much power and knowledge a woman can hold but how much they are not worth in the eyes of man. oh, how I could not stand king john, he deserved everything bad honestly.

ella lyons also wrote about marian's feelings towards robin a lot and showed how complicated love actually can be. it's not rosy and cute all the time, you can be hurt easily and that hurt can stick to you.

also topics of loss and starting again after were touched, but since it was a short book i feel like it had kinda not the time at all to go deep into those subjects.

the author scrapped them and i love her for it, but for me personally, it was just not enough if you know what i mean. i would also have loved if we could get more of marian and robin scene after what happened at the end of the book, it was more like a open ending.

i still recommend that book if you want something to get out of a reading slump, something with a bit of action and love thrown into it.

Get ready to set sail and embark upon the show-stopping sequel to “Defy the Night.”

For the first time, the reader is able to venture beyond the Kingdom of Kandala aboard the “Dawn Chaser.” Kemmerer immerses the reader in in the environment on the pirate ship by using language fit for sea life, nautical terms, and detailed imagery. 

Kemmerer is also thoughtful in the worldbuilding of the Kingdom of Ostriary. Through Captain Rian Blakemore’s character, the reader learns about the political atmosphere surrounding the chain of six islands and the infighting over the throne. 

Blakemore also serves as a source of tension for Tessa and Corrick’s relationship. Blakemore manipulates Tessa into seeing only the evil in Corrick, who is struggling to choose his true self over the cruel persona he has adopted for so long. With so many people influencing their perceptions of each other, Tessa and Corrick's love is put to the test overseas like never before. 

Once again, the reader alternates between Tessa and Corrick’s perspectives with the addition of a new viewpoint: “The Outlaw.” The Outlaw’s point-of-view allows the reader to keep up with Kandala while Tessa and Corrick are abroad. The mystery surrounding his identity also keeps the reader on their toes and contributes to the story’s wild twists and turns. 

While there are only three perspectives featured, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing side characters like Quint, King Harristan, and Rocco play larger roles in this novel. I look forward to seeing how they fit into the final book in the “Defy the Night” trilogy and how Tessa and Corrick will recover from the explosive way “Defend the Dawn” ended!

Robin Hood was always one of my favourites too! It's why I decided to give one a try!

I don't have too much for this one yet, but I can dig into the plot-notes I have ready to go...

So the first thing I did was dig into some of the original legends because I didn't want to fall into the trap of rewriting the disney version (No matter that it sparked my love of the legend.)

Earliest surviving copies date from the late 15th century, and do not include Friar Tuck, Maid Marion, or the King Richard & The Crusades storyline, which is the storyline I see most frequently rehashed in literature and media.

The earliest tales also refer to Robin as a Yeoman, and while that meaning changed over time it originally meant a commoner. In the late 15th century is meant a landowner, between a peasant and a lord.

So Robin won't be a little lordling in my retelling. I'll be taking the story "A Gest of Robyn Hode" and twisting it a little into Robin's backstory instead.

A Knight travelling to hand over his lands because he owes a debt he can't repay, and Robin's father giving the Knight the money in exchange for taking Robin on as a squire.

And the Knight's daughter being Marion.

They'll be more magical elements with elves residing within the Greenwood, and after Robin's parents are killed he's raised by the elves, which is how he's able to hide to effectively from the Sheriff's men. There will be Druids and mystical symbolism within nature that Robin can read, and a King who owes the peasant boy his life.

And I have a lot of outlining to do, but those are some highlights from my notes so far :D

She remembered an echo, a watercolor wash of a memory from the night before. Running down slippery wooden steps, laughing and screaming, because see, look! It was snowing! And yes, that’s right, she had halted kissing to run outside into the sudden snow squall. River followed her, smiling at her while snow clung to the embers of his hair, and he was beautiful, did he know? She asked him if he knew. But he ignored her and gently suggested she needed to maybe go back inside, and Margaux refused in the spirited and good-natured way a drunken college co-ed or a toddler might. River told her the snow was pretty but she wasn’t wearing boots, at least come inside and put on boots before running around in the snow.

DON'T GO GENTLY is a Robin Hood retelling set in the United States in the very near future during total societal and technological collapse.

This is a TRUE retelling, meaning that the source material is heavily referenced and cleverly re-imagined. DGG is post-apocalyptic, solar punk, hope punk, sci-fi, cli-fi, romance, adventure, and a whole lot more, defying traditional publishing expectations and upending tropes and rules of all stripes.
