Pairing: Whitaker x Reader, Whitaker x Older! Reader
Description: A certain pair of puppy eyes don't seem to drift from you
Warnings: im in love with pathetic whitaker smh
The beach greeted you with its warm sun. Rays spread across your back as you rested against the shore, sand sticking to your skin with that uncomfortable coarseness. You were desperate to tan before the wedding, basking in every inch of warmth you could gather. You have always been able to tan rather well, and you wouldn't stop now simply because you're reaching your mid-thirties. Besides, you have no kids, no husband and a gaggle of nurses who would gladly do the same, give or take a few.
Your eyes flickered over the beach, Langdon and Mel seemed to be speaking about something, Robby had a fruity drink in his hand with his eyes on Abbot and Dennis who was supposed to be paying attention to Santos was too busy staring at you to even think. A smirk flickered, the corner of your lips tugging up.
This was not the first time you had caught Whitaker staring like some lovesick puppy. At work he could at least manage to keep his composure between patients, but now there was nothing there to keep him together. The first time you caught his eyes on this island was when you were checking in, eyes bright and smile wide as you spoke a language he couldn't understand. Your eyes caught as you gestured to the group of your coworkers and friends behind you and he swore for a moment that your gaze lingered on him longer than it should have. Then there was breakfast, where even though you were exhausted from travel, you still managed to have this effortless beauty to you. You had lost count after that.
"Oh god.. I really don't get paid enough for this." Trinity grumbled, eyes shutting momentarily as a groan slipped past her lips. That was enough to pull Dennis out of his puppy love gaze. "What? You uh.. you aren't even getting paid though?" He stammered, head tilted slightly as his brows furrowed deeply.
Trinity huffed. He couldn't be this dumb, but better yet, he definitely could be.
"That's the point, Huckleberry—" Her tone was sour. With a sigh and an adjustment to her sunglasses she began to speak again, her tone the slightest bit softer. "If you're going to keep staring at her like a boy going through puberty, you might as well grow some balls and go talk to her." Now this was a change of heart. Typically, Trinity spent her time making fun of Dennis for his little puppy love. A childish longing for their older coworker that was yet to dissipate after a year of awkward stammering and lingering glances. recently he had begun to ramble to her about it and God did she regret sharing a room with him here as well.
He paused, a tentative glint flashing behind his warm eyes. His body tensed as if he was going to stand, shirtless muscles gleaming in the sunlight, and then he just stopped.
"I'll do it later."
That was the excuse he had used today, the night before and three times the day before that. At this point, Santos was going to murder him. She could choke him out in the goat room and stuff him with hay in hopes that no one notices, but then again, she wouldn't get to see the drama that unfolds when he finally does grow the courage to talk to his favourite nurse outside of work. She let the topic rest.
Their bickering had always intrigued you, but you simply couldn't be bothered with getting up to listen in a little closer.
Night followed rather quickly. People rushed to get ready, yourself included, for a night of drinking and celebration. While the wedding was still three days away, you all couldn't help yourselves. Freedom from the pitt called for a celebration, wedding or no wedding.
Lavendar fabric clung to your hips, a sundress that showed a little more skin than what was respectable to share adorning your body in the most perfect ways. Your hair was left out, the salty sea air keeping your waves intact as you combed your fingers through them. Makeup wasn't a top priority for you in this moment, not wanting to put in too much effort when the night was dark and you were bound to ruin it later, so instead you kept it to a minimum, concealer, contour and a blush that matched the berry tint of your lip gloss.
Your shoes made a gentle tap with each step you took towards the outdoor area where mosaic tiles lined the floors and fairy lights strung across the trees. Music bounced off each tile, the distinctive ABBA sound leading to that wide smile spreading across your face once more.
You had caught more eyes than just one, attempting to make small talk with Robby and Abbot who seemed to be more interested in an unknown bet played out between them. You rolled your eyes and left the two older gentlemen to whatever business was occurring between them and made your way towards the makeshift bar. The lights reflected across your jewellery, lighting up your skin with evening glow.
"Vodka orange, please." Your words were light an airy, an ever-polite smile on your face as you nodded towards the bartender. They returned the gesture and began to pour your drink. It came out in a matter of seconds, yet when you went to pay you noticed that someone had beat you to it. An outstretched hand had already tapped their card against the eftpos machine. Your eyes followed up their slender fingers, trailing over each muscle that was a little too well defined under the lights before finally reaching those honeydew eyes you knew all too well.
"I've got it," The mousy brunette spoke, his hair tussled in soft curls that complimented his even softer personality. You thanked him, head tilted back the slightest as your smile turned into that ever-knowing smirk. You noticed his own drink in his other hand, something bright that smelt sweet and tangy. It seemed everyone was picking a tropical drink that day.
After pulling your drink off of a coaster you pushed yourself off from the stool you were leaning on. "You've finally grown some courage," You hummed, gently poking his chest with an accusatory finger before taking a few steps past him away from the bar. You settled in a corner just past the dance floor, Dennis following in suit.
He chuffed and glanced down at his drink. "Not without the help of this," He was growing bashful once more, his heart hammering in his chest. Dennis couldn't figure out if it was the alcohol or the fact that you were in such close vicinity. Your hips swayed along subtly with the music as you took a sip of your drink. There was no plan to get insanely drunk, but a few drinks wouldn't hurt. Unknown to you, Dennis couldn't take his eyes off of you, watching each and every subtle movement had him biting his bottom lip. With a sudden act of motivation, he gulped down the rest of his drink, cringing at the sharp taste of vodka on his gin. He discarded the cup on a table not too far away and upon walking back to you, his hands slid to your hips, gently grasping them with a squeeze. The brunette leaned in, his lips brushing your ear in a way that had shivers spreading down your spine.
You tensed momentarily before leaning into the touch. Your skin grew hot under his touch, lavender fabric scrunched in his palms as he squeezed your hips. "You do... things to me.." he mumbled, lips brushing your skin. Now this was new, liquid courage had pushed him forward, his desires and that puppy love turning into something more.
Instead of leaning into the touch, giving into the brush of his lips and hot breath, you pulled away. Turning to face him, you gave him a soft smirk. "Does your mother know what you're doing, Dennis?" You hummed, raising a brow.
"I sure hope not.." he muttered, almost taking your words as a rejection. His cheeks flushed and he swallowed hard. "I know what I'm doing.." he whispered your name softly, as if he'd known you for years.
You glanced at the dance floor and then back at Dennis. "You better put your money where your mouth is, hun." Your smug tone made him shiver.
have we considered that robby reacted like that, not only because of his professional duty and because he cares for his patients, but because the last thing he needs or wants is to mourn another friend in that same day?
