Ally knows of Robin, but she doesn't know her in the slightest.

She knows that she's in band at school, and because of the mall incident with the Flayer, Ally knows she worked with Steve at Scoops, but it doesn't go beyond that. Ally's been in her own little world trying to recover from the mall, until quite recently, and it's about time that she manages to find a way to deal with people again (hanging out with Max and Nancy has been the only reprieve she's had thus far). So, when she comes through the door to the Family Video and the bell rings out over her, she's honestly a little relieved to see at least a semi-familiar face.

“Is it normal for a place to smell nostalgic when it's a public building?” Ally asks with a smile, immediately moving towards the movies closest to the checkout. “Actually, is it normal for a VHS to have a smell...?” Okay, Ally, chill, that's weird--so that means it's entirely on brand for her.

↯ .ᐟ the first thing he notices about northampton is the smell. polished. like paper & wet leaves rather than the 𝒆𝒙𝒉𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒕 & 𝒂𝒔𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒕 that he's made to grow used to in hawkins. he pops his jacket collar as he crosses the quad, boots scuffing over a scatter of leaves that are just now starting to fall. the campus feels like something out of a movie – he can't help but feel a ping of jealousy that robin gets to be around this every day – with its brick structures and windows trimmed in white, decorated by layers of ivy crawling up the sides. 𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞. he pushes the glasses he normally hates wearing up the bridge of his nose, quietly realizing he'd maybe made the right choice keeping them on as they could maybe disguise how sickeningly out of place he feels here otherwise.

at this point academia feels out of his league. which is silly of him to think ; he's not even the one enrolled. clouded laughter crosses him, harbored by a group of girls his age. one of them meets his eyes briefly. 𝒅𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔. he pretends he doesn't notice it, fists in his jacket pockets with a practiced disregard of the perception. it's the tail end of the week before smith college's fall break, and steve knew robin didn't have the funds to go anywhere. so they'd planned his first visit to campus, he'd dipped into his savings just a touch to get out of the small town in indiana and have opportune time to catch up with his friend. it'd been about a 6 hour commute, from the drive to indianapolis and the flight. 𝐡𝐞'𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞-𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞, but for only a four-day visit it had felt pointless.

six hours before he'd felt he was in an entirely different life, he already notices. classes all day, fall workouts after & takeout dinners eaten on the floor. constantly doing his best to ignore the fact that he doesn't fit in hawkins anymore. he feels the ache to 𝒃𝒆 𝒖𝒔𝒆𝒇𝒖𝒍, something he'd taken for granted before. now, he finds it difficult to find that purpose without a nail bat & concussion. what better time, he'd figured, to visit robin buckley at her ridiculously prestigious college.

he spots her near the steps of one of the academic buildings, animated gestures coloring the atmosphere around her with a notebook in hand. 𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐞'𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 as he falls into earshot, feeling a bloom of comfort at his friend passionately droning on about whatever the hell it was this time. his chest loosens, as she sees him, and he can't help but break into a grin that probably needed some dusting-off after the few months he hadn't seen her.

❛ relax! –- your favorite hawkins sex ed teacher has arrived to class up this place. ❜ the words drip with sarcasm as he jokes of his career. humor painted over his insatiable need to get the fuck out of hawkins. though it's meant to be funny, it pricks at something sad beneath his skin. he doesn't wait for permission to wrap his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. he squeezes the familiar slope of her shoulders once and steps back. ❛ you look . . . insufferably academic. i hate it. it suits you. ❜

WSQK sat on the edge of town like it had been FORGOTTEN sometime around 1979 and no one had bothered correcting the mistake . the building itself looked tired , with sun-faded signage , a parking lot that had surrendered half its paint lines to time and windows that reflected the gray hawkins sky . almost as if the world outside hadn't quite finished beautifying it yet . the air around her carried a heaviness that regina had grown accustomed to lately , the town itself had been holding its breath , and while she kept trying to skip town , leave home , focus on school somewhere else , she was always drug back to hawkins . regina george didn't hold her breath for ANYONE , yet hawkins kept forcing her to . she leaned against the railing outside the small station entrance , her posture immaculate despite the cracked concrete beneath her heels . her car , parked nearby , was polished enough to be a sore thumb , almost rude in its glory . she taps the edge of her sunglasses against her palm , looking up at the station before back to the door . the tapping on her hand was a slow and idle rhythm , and realistically she had NO REASON to be there . which is exactly why she was . inside through the glass she could see robin , who was only visible through the booth window , and regina observed for a moment . robin had this way of filling up space without even trying . and she watched carefully . she could only assume her voice was spilling out into the empty hawkins airwaves with an energy that refused to sit neatly in a little box . regina was not a fan of messy things . 

which meant it was irritating to regina that robin kept showing up to places regina had gone . the door to the station creaks as regina finally pushes her way inside , the faint hum of equipment and low music SPILLS into the room , encasing their senses . she lingers near the booth entrance , her arms cross losely as she waits patiently to be NOTICED by robin . when their eyes finally meet , regina beats her to the punch of getting the first word in . " well . . . " regina starts smooth , as thick as honey as she leans against the doorframe , almost like she belonged there . " this explains a lot , " a finger dances in the air in the direction of the booth , " i was always wondering who was responsible for the weirdest radio station in indiana and oh , there you are . " she studies robin , almost like she was a fascinating specimen under a microscope . " i mean seriously buckley , is rambling into a microphone part of the job description , or did they just decide to hand hawkins' entire broadcast system over to the girl most likely to start a conspiracy podcast ? " her words sharp , still teasing , and unmistakably regina . " so . . . are you ACTUALLY working right now , or am i interrupting hawkins' most chaotic public service announcement ? "

a mix of complicated feelings arise once he steps back inside the radio station— the memories associated with the place are admittedly unpleasant, but will continues to feel a certain degree of fondness for each reunion that was held inside those four walls. the passing of time had taught him that grief never faded, it only became easier to deal with. the squawk felt different now that there was no threat looming on the horizon, no imminent danger waiting to be unleashed. will attempts to get reacquainted with his surroundings, eyes scanning the extensive collection of vinyl records carefully, hoping to catch any familiar titles when robin's voice snaps him out of his thoughts.

will can't help but laugh at that, flattered by the comment but unable to accept it as a compliment when he's simply being a good friend. ❛ it's nothing, robin, seriously. i'm happy that you asked me. ❜ still hard to believe someone as cool as robin— the rockin' robin, hostess of hawkins' most popular radio show, would consider him as one of the options to help her carry out the afternoon show when her co-host couldn't make it. ❛ this is way more exciting than the homework that's waiting for me when i get home. ❜ will admits lightheartedly. he knew how much of a privilege it was to be able to complain about monotonous, boring homework instead of spending his free time coming up with survival plans. still, the youngest byers was grateful for the opportunity to spend his time with his friend. ❛ so, how can i help? ❜

will doesn't entirely know how to explain it himself, but the first thing that immediately came to mind for robin was a star, but not just any regular, plain star symbol that can be found anywhere, something that could be considered extraordinary. something between star and explosion, something like a supernova fit into a small drawing. because that's what she reminds will of. something radiant, something warm, something loud and powerful and exciting all the same.

Both brows lifted when a wrapped, large, and heavy box was placed in his arms, a quizzical expression even as he quipped,

“Hey, I know it’s your first graduation of many, but people should be giving you gifts, not the other way around, Buckley. Free advice your wallet’s gonna be thanking me for in future, just sayin’.”

Taking a seat on the Beemer’s hood, Steve pulled off the paper and back the box flaps, curiosity shifting to shock as the gleam of a silver tonearm caught his attention. His hands stilled, gaze scanning over the Technics lettering as a breathless “no way” escaped. Ever since he’d left the family house—and, perhaps even more importantly, the family record player and his records—behind, it had been a “one day” purchase, something he couldn’t afford or savings being used for more important things. Sure, he’d bought a few records here and there since, almost like a promise to himself that he would have that music in his life again, even if he’d already memorized all the lyrics, but the record player remained a distant goal…something that Robin had heard more than once.

Oh god—has she spent graduation money on this—no, no, she’s too smart for that, maybe she got a really good deal somewhere or someone gave it to her or—

He leaned forward, squinting before carefully lifting the player further from the box, eyes widening further as he confirmed that he had read the model number right, had noticed that distinctive ding next to the splatter plate he’d seen countless times when switching out records.

“Robin—this is yours. I can’t take this; what’re you gonna play until you’re leaving, or in the dorm? I mean this is—this is so nice but, you don’t have to do this, really, I—”

The ON AIR light flickered once before turning off, the hum of equipment still on the only sound for a suspended moment as Steve slowly spun his seat toward Robin’s. He could feel her eyes on him even before he fully turned, as if she were waiting for a sign, some kind of feedback, both nervous and anticipatory. He deliberately took the time to remove his headphones, hanging them on his neck and assuming a serious expression.

“Well, I guess that pretty much proves it—”

A grin enveloped his features, reaching his eyes as he lifted his hands in victory. “You’re amazing at this! Completely rocked this shit. They’d be listening to you coast to coast if you wanted to go that big, seriously.”

He lowered his hands, only to reach back to retrieve a box of party poppers and hold them out to her.  “So obviously, since you killed it, we shoot all this confetti off, then get beer, and food, and we listen to records all night long to celebrate, right? To the first job we’ve had that doesn’t suck.”
