Headed out to Robinson Preserve this afternoon. Other than a few large gumbo limbo branches being down, and a few small trees snapping, there was remarkably little storm damage, because the mangrove swamps did what mangroves do best and protected the coastal tidal region. Robinson Preserve exists because environmental laws meant the land couldn't be developed from farmlands into a subdivision, so the Robinson family donated it to the county for the tax benefits. The county has put a lot of infrastructure $$$ into restoring it to the natural state. It's an example of what could be in Florida if we as a state commit to restoring the areas that we should have never allowed people to develop. The preserve created a whole new free public space, while protecting the coast at the same time. Was out at @thenestatrobinson and Perico Preserves and saw a bunch of roseate spoonbills. It makes me happy that restoring their habitat has brought them back in force, because development had wiped away so much of their habitat that I only saw a single roseate spoonbill in the wild before I was an adult. . I'm glad that Manatee County sees enough value in restoring native coastal habitats that people are willing to vote to tax themselves to do so.
