3 weeks. That's how long Tails said it would take to return Sonic to normal. It's a long time to wait and even plenty more time for mischief and introspection! Join Sonic as he navigates his robotic form in this 3-part short story.
“So… Tails? Not to sound unappreciative, but.. when can you get me out of this hunk of junk and back to normal?” Sonic asked as he swept up the remaining robots around the village.
The last couple days had been crazy. He’d been turned into a robot, had a virus hijack his body, attacked his friends, and then tried to lead a Badnik army to destroy the village. This was way more high stakes than most weekly adventures. And more… horrifying. At least it was finally over. Well, most of it.
Tails was carrying scraps to be taken to the dump. “Well… you’ve still got your organic synapses and with the virus gone and all… if Eggman lets me repurpose the power source from his machine… three weeks. Give or take?”
Definitely not the answer Sonic was hoping for.
“Ugh! Weeks?! That’s so long!”
“At least you’ll have plenty of time to catch up on Ludicrous Speeds.”
With Eggman, hopefully, out of the picture after this whole fiasco, Sonic could finally watch his show. But he wasn’t really in the mood at the moment. He just wanted to go home. He could feel the villagers giving him cold looks.
“Oh, before I forget,” Amy’s voice cut through Sonic’s thoughts. She dug around in her pocket, pulling out a familiar item. “Here’s your scarf back. I picked it up before… you know.”
Sonic happily took his iconic accessory. “Thanks, Ames. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find it.”
Sonic looked over the scarf in his hands, carefully rubbing his fingers over the material. Even though he was still a robot, he had some minor sensory input in his hands. He couldn’t remember where he got his scarf exactly, but it was important to him.
That’s when Sonic noticed a tear in the fabric.
Amy looked rather apologetic. “I’m sorry. It fell in a bush, and caught a snag on one of the branches. I can fix it up–”
“Nononono, it’s okay,” he reassured her. “It actually looks cool. More rugged.” He tied it around his neck, the torn bit hanging over his chestplate. He gave a wink and finger guns to give more confidence. At least he got back something that made him feel more normal.
After the village was cleaned up as best as the team could, Sonic walked to his shack. He started running, or at least tried to run, but realized he was using that booster to move fast. It just started up on its own. It didn’t feel right—using something that replaced his key trait. Sonic shook off his thoughts and continued walking. He hated going slow, but it felt better to actually move his legs than use a jet. It felt like he was in control and not some robotic circuitry.
Sonic stopped as he walked on the beach. The calming sound of the waves didn’t have the same soothing effect it usually did. There was something about the sand that made him itch, but he couldn’t precisely remember why.
The robotic hedgehog walked inside his home. Somehow, even that felt different. Hopefully he could just sleep the stress off. He was tired, but not sleepy. He rolled into his hammock, and did the equivalent of closing his eyes that was possible with his visor screen.
Then, there was a tearing sound.
Sonic fell through his hammock, onto the wooden floor. Most likely breaking some wooden planks in the process.

Sonic was incredibly bored. He was sitting in the house with nothing to do. Tails had been working nonstop trying to get him back to normal. The others had offered going to the beach for volleyball, but Sonic declined. They tried that before, and Sonic ended up puncturing the ball with his metal claws. Besides, it probably wasn’t a good idea to get sand in his joints.
Sonic got up from the couch and went to check on Tails. Sure enough, the fox was at his computer. He was looking over the data from the yellow gem he got from Eggman.
“How’s it going, bud?” he asked as he entered the workshop.
“Still trying to make some headway,” the fox replied. He didn’t turn his attention away from the screen. “The energy this thing gives off is incredible, but I'm still struggling to figure out how it could cause such a massive change on a microscopic level. Never mind applying that in reverse.”
Not the news Sonic was hoping for. He walked over to observe the gem.
This was the thing that turned him into… this. Sure, Eggman’s machine did most of the work, but this powered it. Sonic hated it. And yet, somehow, felt drawn to it. The glow was calming. It almost felt like the gem was calling out to him. For a moment… he could feel his heartbeat.
“Sonic?”
Tails’ voice snapped him back to reality. Sonic’s hand was hovering close to the gem. He took a step back. Whatever this thing was, it kept messing with him in one way or another. Right now, it didn’t feel like anything bad, but it couldn’t be trusted.
“Sorry, Tails. Just trying to find something to keep myself busy.”
“I mean, you could still go out for a run if you wanted.”
Sonic just glanced downward. “It’s not the same without feeling the wind on my face.”
It was true, Sonic loved to run more than anything. But he couldn’t quite get the same sensations with no nerve receptors in this body. Sensations that made him feel like he was truly living.
“I’m sure you can find something. Just don’t touch any of my machines,” the fox told him.
The robotic hedgehog toured the workshop, seeing if there was anything interesting he could do. He spotted the remains of Amy’s hammer. The one the virus influenced him to break in half. Or was that Eggman’s programming? Anyway, with how much Tails had been focusing on fixing Sonic, he hadn’t gotten around to repairing it.
Sonic knew how much Amy loved her hammer. It was her main tool for fighting. And she got really emotional whenever anything happened to it. Well, more than usual. There had to be something he could do.
He picked up the pieces and looked them over. It was so sturdy, yet one thumb jab from him broke it in half. He knew simple glue or tape wouldn’t be enough to get this thing back into fighting shape. How do you fix a hammer?
ACCESSING EGGNET. LOOKING INTO WEAPON REPAIRS.
“WHAT THE HECK?!” Sonic cried, dropping the hammer pieces.
Tails jumped as he heard his friend and loud clanging. “What?! What’s wrong?!”
Sonic was gripping his head as the words faded from his vision. “Something just popped up in front of my eyes! Something about the Eggnet! I don’t know! IS EGGMAN HACKING ME?!”

At last, things finally seemed to be settling down. Thanks to Amy, Sonic could finally go into the village without feeling like some sort of freak. Some still stared, but nowhere near as bad as in the beginning. He still preferred not to go out that much though.
But this was the beginning of the end of this nightmare. Soon, Sonic would be back to normal. Or at least be organic again. It was bizarre to contemplate having a clone body and leave his current one behind, but at least he would be himself.
Sonic stood in Tails’ workshop, and watched the fox work as he explained the plan. Tails attached more wires to his two machines, checking the readouts on his laptop as he did so.
“You’re sure I’ll be able to do all the things I could before?” Sonic asked, leaning on the table. “I trust your work, but this is kind of beyond what you’re used to dealing with.”
Tails paused from his task to turn to Sonic. “Which is why I’m being extra cautious, and won’t stop until I'm 110% certain it will work. I’m not going to put your life on the line with something as risky as basically a brain transplant.”
“Yeah, that makes me feel better. I think.”
Tails grabbed a wrench from his toolbox as he tightened the tubes. The creaking sounded throughout the room, tingling Sonic’s sound processor.
“I know you’ve been pretty bored as of late with all this waiting. Why not try to make the most of the time you’ve got left?”
Sonic cocked his head to the side, a befuddled expression in his visor. “What do you mean by that?”
“I mean you have all these features with this body. You’re connected to the Eggnet, you have a jet engine, enhanced Enerbeams, and who knows what else.”
Rubbing his arm, Sonic turned his attention away from his friend. A sense of shame emitting from him. “I get what you’re saying, it’s just… weird. I don’t know how to use this body, not like when the virus had control. Yet when these functions do happen it’s– I don’t know.”
“Like you’re giving in to not being you anymore?” The fox finished the note.
“I am me, that’s the problem. It doesn’t feel like I should be able to do these things, yet they also feel natural. Does that make sense?”
This was something to ponder. Tails seemed to be giving this some good thought. “I kind of get what you’re saying. I went through something like that myself.”
The robot twisted his head, baffled by the response. How could Tails possibly understand something like this? Was it something from when he was part BeeBot? But Tails had claimed he didn’t remember that ordeal.
Tails gave a little chuckle, seeming to understand Sonic’s confusion. He turned slightly, giving his tails a little wag. “These,” he said, nodding his head back toward them, “aren’t exactly ‘natural’. A mutation that makes me able to fly. When I started doing it, I was confused. It shouldn’t be scientifically possible, but I can fly with them. It felt so strange, yet it felt right as well. Regardless, it’s still my body. I know it’s not exactly the same, but that’s what I think.”
Sonic never thought about it like that. Flying with your tails is pretty odd. He wouldn’t have considered how similar it could be to his own situation. He had been on a teeter totter in his mind for weeks. Accepting and denying this body. It was his, he knew that, but some part in the back of his thoughts wouldn’t accept it. He feared accepting it. But maybe that was the reason why he struggled using it fully.
But Sonic was never one to give into fear. Except water, but that was different. He faced every challenge head on. And this was just another. He could do some really cool things with this body. Like Tails said, he should make the most of the time he’s got left with it.
“I’ll give it a shot.”
