I’m on season 10 of ER right now and I just got to Romanos death and now I gotta rant about his character.
I LOVED Romano. Hear me out. He was a “love to hate” type character. He was a pompous asshole with an ego that didn’t match up to his size at all and during his first few season I absolutely HATED his guts. Every time he was on screen I audibly groaned and I never understood why he was still on the show.
But whenever they started giving us more of him and showing us more of his “soft side” I thought it was really well done. He was still a huge asshole but he had his moments and his moments never felt out of character, yk? He had a lot of faults and I’m really glad the show even when they “redeemed” him they never made his faults to be a good thing.
I’m not gonna try and claim he’s the best super crazy complex character and that I’m an expert on character analysis. I’m a teenager who’s obsessed with a controversial character from a show made in the 90s leaking into the 2000s. But, to me he was just so interesting. The actor who played him did a wonderful job, the role was beautifully done and during his scenes it felt like the actor (Paul McCrane) actually enjoyed playing this character.
I went from being enraged everytime he was on screen to actually looking forwards to it because even if I didn’t agree with a lot of his actions I knew it was going to be a fun or interesting watch. I also love how he also wasn’t a strictly comic relief character, yk? He had some depth, even if it was just a tiny bit.
Side note; when he signed to Reese I actually gasped. Just had to mention that. Love that scene.
Also, dude had some REALLY funny moments. Whether it was him being an asshole. Him crashing out. Something unfortunate happening to him. He had some funny moments. Ik I said I’m glad he wasn’t a strictly comic relief character, but his comic relief was relieving.
Now, his death…a lot of people hated his death, but personally? I think it was fitting. It was INSANE I was lucky enough to be going into it blind, same with him losing his arm in the first place, it was shocking and just a really cool experience to watch those scenes with no knowledge of them. His death was absolutely absurd and I think that’s fitting for his character. I couldn’t imagine his story ending in anything other than some crazy dramatic firey blaze. He was Rocket Romano after all.
And a lot of people mention that it was just done for shock value and to draw in new audiences. So? It was kinda obvious that’s what it was. I enjoy it. That’s one thing I love about this show is just the ridiculous things that keep going on. Plus, it was the 90s-2000s, shock value was all the rage. I love it.
One thing I will say is it did make me a little sad when no one showed up to his memorial. Even if they didn’t like him that much I would have liked to see some of the characters showing up, even just one at a time, they didn’t even have to say anything. Just stare at the photo and sigh yk? Tbf there’s a lot of new characters who didn’t know him that well now so idk.
I could go on for hours about him, he’s not even my favorite character. But I just personally think he was well written, Paul McCrane did a wonderful job and I think his story tied up perfectly. Even if it was disappointing to see him go I think we got just the right amount of Robert Romano.
Sometimes Romano is funny and that only makes me hate him more. Fucking cunt bastard stop making me laugh.
