Liza Minnelli made a celebrated return to Broadway in 1997 when she stepped into the lead role of Victor/Victoria, briefly replacing Julie Andrews during Andrews’ medical leave - for vocal rest. Her run generated enormous buzz: Minnelli’s brief run drew both adoration and controversy. Critics praised her raw charisma: as Ben Brantley put it, “her every stage appearance is perceived as a victory of show-business stamina over psychic frailty. She asks for love so nakedly and earnestly, it seems downright vicious not to respond.”  But behind the scenes there was drama, reports said she missed rehearsals, flubbed lines, and was underprepared, leading co-star Tony Roberts to sit out in protest. 

Despite the turbulence, her time in the show helped reignite ticket sales, and added a layer of Broadway lore to the show’s history, remembered fondly as one of the era’s most exciting mid-run cast changes.
