❝  i  hate  wasted  potential.   that  shit  crushes  your  spirit,  ❞   josef  says.   he  puts  out  his  cigarette,   butt  dropped  on  the  ground  and  crushed  underneath  duct  taped  -  together  converse.   he  offers  teddy  a  sideways  glance.   gives  her  something  that  looks  like  a  smile,   but  it's  tight  and  awkward  and  doesn't  quite  meet  his  eyes.   he  fumbles  in  deep  pockets  of  ratted  and  stained  jeans  for  another  cigarette,   loose  in  his  pocket.   lights  it  with  an  old  school  lighter  pulled  from  his  other  pocket,   stolen  from  one  family  member  or  another  years  ago.   family  members  he  doesn't  talk  to  anymore  after  burning  out  all  those  bridges.   he  puts  the  cigarette  between  his  teeth,   voice  muffled  as  he  holds  it  there  while  he  puts  his  lighter  back  away.   ❝  i  ever  tell  ya  i  was  meant  to  be  a  screenwriter ?   least  i  wanted  to  be.   used  to  write  all  these  ideas  for  screenplays  and  shit.   but  then.  .  .  ❞   he  trails  off.   thinks  about  all  that  heavyness  that  comes  with  that  but  then.   he  shrugs,   tries  to  be  passive  about  it  all.   passive  like  his  own  wasted  potential  and  wasted  life  don't  carve  open  a  hole  in  his  chest.   it  carves  him  own  and  leaves  him  with  an  ache  that  seeps  into  the  very  marrow  of  his  bones.   something  he  can  never  escape  as  it's  become  part  of  him.   ❝  whatever.   i  guess  it  doesn't  really  matter.   i've  got,   like,   a  kid  now  and  shit.   so  i  guess  that's  worth  something.  ❞
