Butthole Surfers in Jem Cohen's Witness (1986)
Continuing to make my way through Our Band Could Be Your Life. Butthole Surfers are another act to whom I've never really paid all that much attention before. In a book with a generally rockist point of view (blech!), they are like a breath of fresh air (or a refreshing breath of smelly air?). With strobes, films, fire, a go-go dancer, and copious drunken shenanigans, they are more like a Wooster Group acid trip than a "rock band" per se, more concerned with showmanship than staying "legitimate" or getting their sound perfect. That is most definitely not a criticism.
(I am fighting the urge, however, to play devil's advocate with myself here.)
Jem Cohen's film apparently documents their infamous Danceteria show which involved much in the way of their usual strobes and fire, as well as on-stage sex acts, spraying urine on the audience, and guitarist Paul Leary "discretely poking screwdriver holes in every PA and monitor speaker in the place." At which point they have crossed the line between performers and, well, assholes.
