The marauders come to watch you perform, as organised by your managers, but they arrive late and loudly - so what better reaction then to call them out a bit. As expected the crowd loves it, but what you didn’t expect was how petty one of the boys is.
Lily doesn't respond. Finally looking up from the phone screen, that she had been assaulting with her typing speed for almost 10 minutes, to give marlene one of the classic lily evans shut-up-marlene looks to none other than marlene herself.
“Damn ok” Marlene says, putting her hands up in fake innocence and leaning further back against the wall displaying the big red ‘NO EATING’ sign right above her head before taking another bite of her mars bar.
It’s a ritual that the girls have, someone (usually marlene) has to eat something right underneath the no eating sign backstage.
The ‘one time’ they forgot Marlene fell off her seat mid song. The embarrassment has stuck with her since. The girls didn't bother telling her that Mary had actually eaten under the sign that day in hopes it would make her feel better to have something to blame.. but it backfired and the girls ended up with one very superstitious marlene mckinnon.
You and your best friend share your usual what's-going-on-there look but before you and marlene can really finish telepathically psycho-analysing of your more-irritable-than-usual boss your interrupted by said irritable manager running, literally, out of the room saying something along the lines of
“illberightbsckjustgivemeasec-“
The backstage door slams shut, startling dorcas and mary - who were previously unaware of lilys strange behavior, the girls share a confused look and mutual shrug before each returning to their individual pre-show routines.
Marlene keeps devouring her mars bar, Mary is getting frustrated while trying to pin her curls out of her face in the mirror which Dorcas is sat cross legged in front of doing her makeup.
It doesn't take long before Dorcas shifts her focus, watching you through the mirror as you detune and retune every string on your already tuned guitar. Habit.
“It’s tuned” she cuts through the comfortably tense silence, knocking you out of your spiral.
“Huh?” She's always been good at that. Good at knowing when to save her from herself, before the pre-show jitters turn to nerves turn to anxiety turns to panic.
“I said it's tuned love-” she turns to look at you properly, “- now come do my eyeliner” she commands, offering you the pen and giving you that knowing dorcas smile.
Putting the guitar down, you walk over to the full-length mirror Dorcas is sitting cross-legged in front of and grab the liner she hands you before sitting yourself down in her lap.You focus as you drag the purple colour along her lash line before smudging it out to look messy.
Mid-flick the door opens and Lily bursts in, scaring all of the girls.
“Jesus lils, you almost made me fuck up the wing” you jump, trying catch your breath.
Lily looks to her left where a woman is standing beside her, she has an interesting look about her, but definitely in the music industry.
Pinstripe trousers, black turtleneck, leather blazer and boots with chunky silver earrings, bold eye makeup and her hair in a bun where the front parts of her shaggy haircut falling in front of her face, her hair a combination of black and platinum blonde.
God, Marlene definitely has a crush on her.
When she looks over at you, snapping you out of your trance, you scramble out of dorcas’ lap onto your feet.
“Oh hi sorry” you cringe at the use of your first name as you introduce yourself.
She gives you an amused smile and reaches out so you can shake her hand, god she has soft hands.
“Andromeda Black” she smiles almost knowingly, “but please call me Andy.” add add with a playful wink before turning back to lily, her face becoming somewhat professional again. You're about to leave them be but something she says catches your attention.
“I’m so sorry about our unprofessionalism, the boys should have been here by now.” she says with a slight touch of annoyance creeping into her voice.
“The boys?” Mary interjects, just as lost as the rest of you.
You feel a slight relief that someone said something, completely unsurprised it was mary. She's always saying what you're all thinking and in this moment, you could not be more grateful.
It seems the other girls feel it too as you all subtly look to Lily for explanation but she is looking at Andromeda with such awe and admiration you start to question if it's only Marlene who may have a crush on this woman.
Marlene clears her throat aggressively to snap lily out of it and it works, subtle as always. “Sorry, I haven’t had the time to go through tonight with them.” she says apologetically, still facing andy.
Under her breath, Andy just lets out a breathy chuckle, “Oh that’s fine, if anything it will be better for authenticity” she reassures lily. She turns to you with a sort of ambiguity “just put on the fantastic show you usually do.” You're all still confused but at least now you're reassured..?
“Lily, do you mind showing me to the bar?” she says politely before turning back to you for the last time to add “I need a drink in my hand when they finally decide to join us, for both our sakes.” jokingly.
You all stand there baffled about who this insanely cool woman you've just met is as lily leads her through the audience to the bar where she has been reserved a table almost directly in view of the stage but not far forward enough to be in the standing crowd.
The silence is very short lived as the 1 minute call goes off meaning it's time to grab your instruments and get to places before the lights go on.
The buzz hits you as soon as you step onto the stage, that kind of rush that you feel everywhere before settling in your stomach and soul. You walk up to the mic, even with your earpiece in you can still hear the crowd. You hold your head high, preparing for the first lights to flash the second Dorcas starts the opening riff, that was your favourite part of the show.
The crowd lights dim and you take a glance behind you at the girls, all in their usual places and personas. You love the way your best friends transform. The wash of focus that takes over Dorcas, the way Mary's shoulders relax and she, who is usually the most vibrant and friendly, slips into a casual confidence and Marlene perches at her drums almost vibrating with energy to expel. Actually, on second thought, Marlene is the exact same as always.
The lights flicker as Dorcas starts the first song, Mary and Marlene joining in and building it up to the moment you can open your mouth to sing, allowing the music to take control over you. You can feel the others behind you, grounding you. Fuck, you really love your girls.
The first song ends and you begin the introduction as usual, starting with Marlene's drum solo. “Okay now Marls, you're just showing off now” you tease.
“Whatever, Dorcas loved it” she says winking at her girlfriend. The crowd goes wild, they always do and part of you thinks that's why Marlene does it.
Dorcas does her solo, which leaves you wondering whether it's actually improvised or not.
Once Mary gets the second to do some slap bass you know she will and by the end of it your hard-core question your musical ability and how on earth you got in with the band.
“Jesus, leave some talent for the rest of us, yeah?. For anyone living under a rock, that beautiful creature is our bassist Mary Ma-”
You're interrupted by the sound of the venue doors opening and a loud group walking in. And by loud, they’re loud.
How have they even gotten in? Final doors closed 10 minutes ago.
As they get further you can see that its four boys, two of which seem to have realised the entire venue is turned around looking at them and are looking extremely embarrassed while they speed walk through the crowd shooting you apologetic looks. And two of which have definitely not gotten the hint, laughing (or screeching - you're not exactly sure which) so loudly you can hear it through your in-ears.
They’re blissfully unaware of the attention they are drawing, they are close enough now for you to catch the one on the left's eye. He just winks at you as if he’s the main event. He winks?! Oh hell no.
Without missing a beat you raise the mic to your lips, “nice of you two to join us”.
Only two of the boys are in sight now, the others must have escaped while they had the chance, you watch as the one with glasses gives the winker a sharp elbow to the chest. He looks at the glasses guy confused, to which he responds by nudging his head toward you.
You keep going. He wanted attention, he's getting attention. (And it's fun to watch glasses panic.)
“For anyone wondering, we actually didn't rehearse this part. That’s just their entrance music.”
Oh, glasses is panicking now. He quickly follows the other two to the bar and tugs the winker along, who was planted firmly on the spot, arms crossed and eyes staring into your soul as if you're not on a stage 3 ft above him.
Laughter erupts from the crowd and marlene slams a comedic beat on the drums in mock fanfare. Both Mary and Dorcas, dying of laughter, bow down to you on either side. All in all it made quite a memorable start to the show.
“Now, where was I before the circus arrived?”
“Did she really have to do that?” Sirius huffs, dropping into his seat at their table like a scolded child.
“Did you really have to make a scene?” Andromeda counters.
He hears Peter snort as he and the others return with drinks. James points at Sirius “He was loud”, who looks absolutely outraged.
“You were cackling like a bloody hyena during her introduction” Remus says, taking a seat on his left.
“Ok, and..?” Sirius responded stubbornly.
“Mate, that's basically heckling.” Peter adds, the others laugh and Sirius just responds with a mumbled “whatever” as he reaches for a sip of the drink James had bought him.
Suddenly, he sits up straight and turns to Andy. “Can we please make this meeting quick, if I leave in 10 I can still meet Amelia”.
Andy looked up at him, “We’re staying.” she just said dismissively. Sirius opened his mouth to counter but she cut him off saying “Sirius, you promised to stay for the full meeting and this is the full meeting. I brought you all here to watch them.”
“Watch who? I don't even know their names.”
“Does it matter? You’ll complain either way” Remus was starting to get frustrated with sirius' argument.
But Sirius wasn't exactly known for letting someone else have the last word.
“I just don't understand why I'm missing my night for some girl band.- ” He mumbled, sinking further into his seat “-could've just stayed home and played fleetwood mac like a normal person.”
Even James was getting tired now, he was about to tell his best mate off but a sharp clash of the drummers cymbals stopped him.
He sighed “just shut up and watch, pads”. Sirius huffs and sits back further crossing his arms, to an outsider it might look like he's actually trying to become one with the seat.
He did shut up and watch. For about 9 seconds.
And then the commentary started.
“I’m sure it’ll pick up in a minute, padfoot”
Just as the words leave Peter’s mouth, the guitarist plays a funky riff. Short but enough to set the song off into a punky chaos they all love. The rhythm itself was enough to put a smirk onto the boys' faces. All except Sirius, who is wearing an expression of pure irritation.
“Well… now it's just too much. I mean I can’t even figure out the melody if I'm honest”. He said, nose in the air, making it up as he goes. Sirius has never really been great at hiding things, especially when he likes something.
“The bassline is actually really impressive.” Remus stated, not even looking in Sirius’ direction. God, Sirius hates being dismissed.
“Be quiet Sirius” Andy snaps, finally losing her cool.
About 20 more seconds go by before Sirius speaks again, the whole table sighing as soon as the first syllable is out.
“Look, it's just weird that the lead singer hasn’t even sung yet. Honestly, I’ve seen manikins with more charisma” Lie.
No response. But the silent treatment backfires as it gives Sirius exactly the opening he needed to continue his ‘very unbiased’ criticism.
“You know, I bet she can’t even si-"
Sirius’ mouth hangs open but no more sounds come out after the interruption. Ok maybe he was wrong about the whole ‘not being able to sing’ thing, very very wrong. His literal jaw-dropped expression earns some incredulous looks and smirk from his bandmates.
“Fuck me” james mutters in disbelief, wearing a matching expression. He’s just as in awe as Sirius is. Although, upon realising that, Sirius quickly put a cool neutral expression on, leaning back in his chair again. He’s gone back to sulking but at least now he’s quiet.
The show goes by as usual. The song fades out leaving only the noise of the applause. Flushed and grinning, you lean in to the mic as the crowd settles a bit.
“Alright.. mid-set vote, you guys know the drill-”
This was a little competition that you and Mary created a while back after countless night about post-show dinners, this was the solution. The winner chooses the takeout for the night with no complaints from anyone else.
“- who’s tonight's favourite?” Predictably, it's chaos. Names are being shouted left, right and centre but one girl from the front catches your eye.
“MARY AND DORCAAASS!” she shouts with almost alarming enthusiasm.
You turn to look and find both girls standing together with overly-innocent smug smiles. They nudge you to move and step up to the mic, striking a cheesy pose as if they’re being photographed.
“We’d like to thank the academy-” Mary daps her fake tears away with her sleeve. “- and our fanbase”. The crowd roars again.
Now its Dorcas' turn “Team Dory forever.” she says thumping her chest in solidarity.
You step up to the mic again, “They’re coordinated, I can't compete”. Mary blows a mocking kiss your way and Dorcas shrugs. And yet the crowd still cheers.
“Marlene, we’re losing ‘em. Do something cool!”
She launches into her drums. It’s absolutely wonderfully unhinged; speed and flair that makes your brain lag behind. She looks manically perfect, whipping her hair around - you know, sometimes you really do worry about her neck just popping like a barbie doll. Suddenly, she loses her grip and a drumstick goes flying towards you. As if on instinct, you catch it before it can take a crowd member's eye out.
“Well, that took a hostile turn” you break the silence. Marlene just shrugs.
Still in shock you turn to the crowd saying “A hard and fast finish from marlene.”
Fuck. You heard it as it came out.. and apparently the crowd did too as giggles break through the audience.
“Marlene Jean Mackenzie Mckinnon. Don’t. Say. Anything.” you say in a very desperate attempt at some damage control. Lily is most definitely sighing right now.
“What, me? -” she replied with faux innocence “- i’m an angelll”.
“Yeah, a sweaty, loud one” Her girlfriend mumbled.
“Marlene Mckinnon!” Dorcas gasps dramatically.
Mary jumps in “Okayyyy, this one is called ‘Tuesday’. Enjoy!”, she kicks it off with the bass riff you put into the live version. You shoot her a thankful look before refocusing your attention back into the song.
“Marlene Mckinnon!” the lead guitarist gasp-shouted at her girlfriend, the girl with shaggy blonde hair who just seconds ago almost flung a drumstick into the audience. Pete felt that one.
“Oi prongs” Peter whispered to James, a floaty melody playing in the background. They were reaching the slower part of the set.
“I swear a Marlene went to our primary” Pete whispers back.
“No. The other primary we went to james.. You know, where we battled trolls and flew around on brooms.” The sarcasm in Peter's tone makes everyone snicker.
“Oh, shove off.” James defended. Focusing back on Peter's previous point he looked towards the drummer. “I mean, maybe? Do you think she looks familiar to you?”
“Mate I can’t see shit from here”. Peter laughs and his best friend who is aggressively squinting through his glasses.
“Right then” James pops up from his seat, almost like an excited meerkat, “let's just get closer then.” he says nodding off towards the stage.
“Yeah alright”. Peter downs what's left of his beer and turns to the rest, “you guys coming?”
Remus shrugs,”yeah sure, why not?” and stands up, towering over everyone else.
“Yeah, no. I’m good here.” He states stubbornly. There was no way in hell he was gonna get any closer than necessary.
The others didn’t argue. James was already weaving through the crowd with Peter on his heels, rambling something about barrier position and lighting angles. Remus followed at his own pace already towering over the rest of the room like a lighthouse in a sea of sweaty indie kids.
For a second, it was quiet or, not quiet, but still. The kind of still that comes after movement. The kind that feels like a pause.
Andromeda doesn’t look at him. She hasn’t said a word for a while, just sat sipping her drink, eyes flicking between the band and the crowd like she’s collecting data.
Sirius just leans back in his seat. Watching the stage with the kind of expression that could probably start a fire if he aims it hard enough. The singer hadn’t looked at the crowd once. Not really. She didn’t need to. The way she sang — like she was in on a secret, like the audience was just lucky to be in the room. To be honest, it was a bit maddening.
He glances at his glass. Empty.
“You hear that?” Andromeda says, low and thoughtful, eyes on the stage.
Sirius doesn’t look up. “Hear what.”
He rolls his eyes automatically, but Andromeda doesn’t flinch.
“It’s got this thing,” she says, leaning into it a little now. “Like she’s not just hitting notes — she’s bending them. You have that in common.”
She watches his face, waiting for the inevitable sarcastic blow-off. It didn’t come. Instead, Sirius gave a tight, silent kind of smile, like he’d swallowed something bitter and didn’t want to spit it out in front of her. His arms folded tighter across his chest.
“There’s this… subtle power in it,” she goes on, more cautious now. “Not loud. Not showy. It just sort of sneaks up on you.”
She shakes her head slightly, frowning as if annoyed by the fact. “It’s actually kind of hypnotic, now I’m thinking about it.”
Sirius still didn’t reply, but the twitch in his jaw gave him away.
It’s like Andy's trying to pitch this girl’s voice like she was bloody Ursula — give up your soul in exchange for an insane voice and a pair of Docs. He huffed through his nose.
“And the phrasing,” she added, lifting her glass again. “It’s conversational, but still smooth. Like she’s talking to you, but it’s a melody. I don’t know how she’s doing that.”
Sirius turned to look at her properly now, face unreadable.
“Look, Andy. I don’t know what you want me to say.”
He pauses, then, with deliberate, venomous sarcasm, says:
“Best thing I’ve ever heard." "All hail the girl band.”
Andromeda doesn’t even blink. She stands up without a word, tossing the rest of her drink back like she’d just remembered she had somewhere better to be.
“Grow up, Sirius. You’re meeting them in a minute, so get your act together.”
“What?” he frowns, sitting up. “I have to meet them too?”
But she was already halfway out the door, pulling a lighter from her pocket.
“Smoke break,” she called over her shoulder, not looking back.
By the time Sirius gathers the effort to yell something after her, she is gone. Left him at the table alone, surrounded by four empty glasses, a drained drink, and the sound of the band ringing out. Still loud, still annoyingly impressive.
The set ends. The lights dip. You’re sweating and buzzing and vaguely wondering if Marlene’s going to throw another drumstick into the ceiling by accident.
You hop down from the stage, laughing as Dorcas grabs your wrist and starts spinning you in some made-up post-gig victory dance. It’s short-lived - she gets distracted by someone she knows near the bar and disappears, and you’re left weaving through what's left of the crowd, still catching your breath, still glowing.
And that’s when you see him.
Curled up in a booth like he’s waiting for a tragic backstory to happen. Leather jacket. Arms crossed. Permanent scowl. It’s the winker.
He looks so dramatically bored it’s almost impressive. Like someone’s dared him to sit there and sulk with maximum aesthetic appeal. Like he’s the only person in the venue who didn’t just watch your band tear the roof off. The others are gone - probably mingling, pretending to be chill about how great you were. But not him. No. He’s chosen brooding. What a shock.
You scoff before you can help it. Actually out loud.
Because of course the guy who winked at you during a live set is now sitting alone like the misunderstood lead of a YA adaptation.
He hears you. Obviously. His head turns, slow and smug like he’s been waiting for you to notice him again all night.
You roll your eyes so hard you might sprain something.
Then - just to twist the knife a bit - you offer him a sickly sweet smile, lean slightly toward him like you’re about to say something flirtatious, and then… turn on your heel and walk away.
Let him stew, not like you’re gonna see him again.
You’ve got better things to do than pay an audience to a boy who sulks prettier than he smiles.
The corridor outside the green room is quiet, save for the muffled thud of bass through the door. Dim lighting. Low buzz. The kind of place that smells faintly of smoke, spilled beer, and something electric in the air that hasn’t quite fizzled out from the set.
Sirius paces. His boots scuff the floor like he’s trying to wear the vinyl down through sheer rage.
James leans against the wall, perfectly relaxed, holding his drink with one hand and watching his best friend spiral for the third time tonight.
“I’m telling you, mate - she scoffed at me”
Without looking up, James replies “Yeah, and you probably deserved it”.
Sirius whips around, insulted.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Just saying, you’ve got one of those faces.”
James just shrugs, this is not the first time Sirius has spiraled because someone didn't swoon at his feet.
“You know, the kind that people want to scoff at. It’s just your general vibe.”
Sirius stares at him, open-mouthed. Then whirls back to pacing, mind going at a thousand miles a minute. And his hands match the pace.
“It wasn’t a vibe, it was definitely targeted. I looked eyes with her - and she snorted, like she’d seen something better inside the bloody bin. I’ve never been snorted at before"
James stays calm, smirking. “That you know of”.
Sirius ignores his best friend's comment, not helpful.
“It was like - like she saw everything about me and went: nah. No thanks. I mean, i didnt get to make a first impression.
James raises an eyebrow, intrigued by sirius’ annoyance.
“And you’re mad because…?”
Sirius sputters, “I’m not mad, I’m just… noticing. Making observations.”
“And pacing about them, Like a very stable, very unbothered person.”
Sirius stops pacing and runs a hand through his hair like he’s in a tragic biopic. Not because he’s bothered, of course - he just happens to find it deeply offensive that someone would look at him, register the full Sirius Black experience, and still have the audacity to scoff. Rude.
“She looked at me like she already had me all figured out. Put me in a box marked ‘cliche’ and couldn’t be arsed to open the lid.”
“Fuck off prongs”. Pure venom in Sirius' voice.
James snorts into his drink, amused. Sirius leans against the opposite wall, arms crossed tightly, jaw still clenched. He’s trying not to let it bother him. He’s failing spectacularly.
A moment goes by, then Sirius is starting up again.
“It’s the way she smiled after. Like she knew I noticed it. Like she wanted me to.”
“Maybe she did-” James gasps, “-maybe she was flirtinggg.” he teases in a sign-song tone.
Sirius huffs. “If that was flirting, I’m joining a monastery.”
James is, in all honesty, very entertained right now. Not even James Potter, the infamous prankster extraordinaire, has been able to rile him up this much. Not even Remus and his endless sarcasm. Christ, James really needs to meet this girl.
Sirius scowls deeper. He’s about to say something else when both boys perk up at the sound of the footsteps coming down the corridor.
It seems James’ prayers have been answered because right at that moment, you come down the hallway, mid-scroll, jacket tossed over one shoulder. Your hair’s still a bit messy from the stage lights, cheeks still flushed, and there’s the faintest hint of glitter still left on your cheekbone.
You don't notice them right away. Then you do. Your steps slow.
The corridor suddenly feels a bit smaller.
You clock Sirius. You stop. Tilt your head slightly, eyes flicking from him to James, then back again.
Sirius doesn’t hesitate. Doesn’t blink. Just staring into your soul, managing a straight face this time.
“You scoffed at me” he states.
He’s dead serious, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Earlier. During the set, I saw you; You looked right at me - and scoffed. You did it with intent”
James takes a slow sip of his drink. He is enjoying this way too much.
You blink, then lift an eyebrow. You're not smiling, not exactly. But your mouth twitches at the corner - like you're deciding whether or not to bother with him.
“Right then. And I suppose the earth spun just for you today?”
James makes a soft ‘oof’ noise into his glass.
Sirius raises his hands in a ‘back-off’ motion.
“I’m just saying - you looked at me like I was something to scrape off your boot.”
“Hmm, maybe I was looking past you. Pretty sure there was a bin nearby.”
That one lands. Sirius stiffens up. He leans in closer to you, lowering his voice a bit. “You don’t even know me.”
You tilt your head to meet his eyes. Fuck, he’s too tall to intimidate physically - words it is then. “Exactly.”
Silence. Thick with static. Neither of you look away so you're now locked in that kind of eye contact that makes third parties deeply uncomfortable. AKA James Potter. You lose control and let your gaze drop slightly to his mouth. Then back up. It's fast, but not fast enough for him to miss.
Sirus’ jaw ticks. He pushes off the wall slightly.
“You always this pleasant to strangers?”
You laugh a bit, “Only when they're this dramatic.”
James mutters into his drink, “Oh, this is gonna be awful”. That snaps you out of it and you jump away from each other slightly.
“So uh, you gonna keep blocking the door or am I meant to climb over your wounded ego?”
Sirius doesn’t move. He raises an eyebrow. A challenge, you're like 5-foot-nothing.
You don't flinch. You step in - just one pace closer, but enough to make James blink.
Another beat. James rolls his eyes and opens the green room door with a sigh. “Right, okay, come on. You can resume your enemies-to-lovers arc inside normal people”
Sirius’ head snaps towards him horrified. “Nope. Absolutely not.”
You shoots them a quick, unimpressed look, like you can’t believe you have to deal with this. Without hesitation, you brush past Sirius and James, your shoulder just grazing Sirius’s before you disappear into the green room. The door shuts behind you and Sirius looks at it like its just insulted his entire bloodline - not that he’d mind, probably even take it as a compliment.
Under his breath he says to James “She definitely scoffed”
James just slowly turns to his best mate, disbelief all over his face. “Mate, are you even hearing yourself right now?”
Sirius groans and knocks his head lighty against the wall. “I hope you step on a plug”
Sirius gives him a deadpan stare that says I’m not joking, then turns and steps quietly into the green room.
The corridor falls silent.
