Happy birthday to Jacques Lipchitz, born on this day in 1891. A Cubist master and advocate for public art, his works can be seen on city streets and galleries alike—including at the top of the Rocky Steps.

Road Trip: Westward Day 2: A little Philly on the way to DC

This summer, the kids and I embarked on a 10,000-mile cross-country road trip from Washington to Maine and back. Along the way, we got a brief taste of America through landmarks and sights that represent our nation, for better or worse.

We hung out with the family for the morning and had yummy ice cream for lunch at Milk Sugar Love in Jersey City.

Rocky Steps, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We left New Jersey and headed to Washington, DC. On the way, we stopped to see the famous “Rocky Steps” in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. You can see the steps in several of the Rocky movies, as well as the Creed movies, and even in the comedy action hero movie Shazam.

For example, here’s a Rocky II clip from 1979:

Of course, that scene is a lot less dramatic if you turn the sound off. Then it’s kind of weird.

Rocky essentially passes the torch to Adonis in the 2015 movie Creed:

We had to climb the steps ourselves, of course, and stand in Rocky’s spot.

On our visit, we saw the life-size statue of Rocky that the city of Philadelphia has installed near the bottom of the steps:

The view from the top of the steps is gorgeous, as expected.

Afterward, we walked to the nearby Pete’s Famous Pizza and ate some genuine Philadelphia Cheesesteaks.

Delaware and Maryland

Our route took us through Wilmington, Delaware, as well as Baltimore, Maryland. We did not stop in either state except to do the kids’ trip activities: Luke shot basketballs and Beth roller-skated.

These are tiny states. Washington state occupies over 70,000 square miles of land. By comparison, Maryland is under 13,000, and Delaware is not even 2,500.

I know there are things to see there, but we were just driving through.

Washington, DC

We rolled into DC in the evening, shortly before the sun went down. I had never driven in DC before. On prior visits, I had always taken taxis or public transportation. But the evening traffic was not unlike other urban environments. 

The hotel pool was already closed, so we ordered food and called it a night.
