i interviewed friends and family to discuss the lore, cover rodda's excellent handling of difficult topics, investigate the mysterious rarity of the books in the western hemisphere, talk about the impact the books had on us as fantasy readers, and pitch the series to new readers.

Roddacember - Day 1

Introduction - A book opening

I don't know if I have a favourite book opening, but I think leaving the City of the Rats behind is one of the most dystopian images in DQ, so there's that.

The whole history of the place is so bleak and depressing, and its people never know any peace at all. It's just miserable all around - which makes it quite concerning that I like it so much. However, to me, DQ is about fighting the unstoppable force and facing the impossible odds, and winning despite that.

I guess that this opening scene just reminds me of that whole message. Yeah, they got the gem, they defeated the guardian, a new chapter of the story is beginning - and still. Still. It's not bright and hopeful. It's the ruins burning in the background as they race against time to survive.
