Collect for Rogation Monday

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that thy gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who constantly receive good things from thy hand, may always give thee thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Omnipotens Deus, Domine coeli et terrae: Humiliter te petimus ut messes terrae marisque ad usum nostrum largitate tua dones et serves, atque prosperes eos qui diligenter metunt, ut nos e manu tuo bona constanter accipientes tibi gratias semper agamus; per Iesum Christum Dominum nostrum, qui tecum vivit et regnat in unitate Spiritus Sancti, Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum. For medieval parishioners, Rogationtide was a season to be mindful of the relationship between human bodies and the physical space they inhabit - to touch and mark its boundaries, to feel the earth beneath their feet, and to bless and give thanks for the food the land brings forth. It reflects a belief in the profound connection between humans and the natural world, bound together by ties of gratitude and gift, as well as an appreciation for the abundance of nature as the visible expression of God's creative power and loving care.

Earthquakes and other calamities afflicted the diocese of Vienne in Dauphiny (France) in the fifth century, and St. Mamertus, who was bishop of that diocese, instituted a penitential procession with public supplications on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Ascension Day. In 816, Pope Leo III introduced it into Rome, and soon after became a general observance throughout the Church.

The Litany of the Saints, the Psalms, and the Prayers sung during the procession on these days are supplications; hence the name Rogation Days (rogáre, to ask) applied to them. The object of these rogation supplications is to appease the anger of God and avert the scourges of His justice, and to pray for the harvest.

[In a 10th century homily] Ælfric talks about how the fruitfulness of the earth, the course of the year and the seasons illustrate the gap between divine knowledge and human perception, and of course that’s precisely the gap Rogationtide seeks to bridge by asking for God’s blessing on the earth. The nature of the sun is a good topic for a summer sermon, since if you are engaged in praying for a good harvest, the sun’s light and heat which make the crops grow are like God’s favour made visible.
