The Best Books In the World (according to the three-year-old I babysit)
Let’s call him Max. Max isn’t his name, but he did dress up as Max from Where the Wild Things Are for Hallowe’en. Max has firefighter PJs, a Spider-Man nightlight, and the sort of laugh you normally associate with a superhero being suspended over a tank full of piranhas. He also has very decided opinions on which books are the best.
Room On the Broom, by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Max’s parents dug out this seasonal classic sometime in October and months later we’re still reading it pretty much every week.
Playtown: Airport, by Roger Priddy
Every page in this oversized board book is packed with flaps to peek behind, details to point out, and facts about airports. Any attempt to turn a page prematurely raises vociferous objections.
The Pigeon Needs a Bath, by Mo Willems
It’s all in the delivery with the Pigeon books. Personally I always imagine the Pigeon with a strong Boston accent, maybe because I’ve had some experiences with genuine Bostonian pigeons and they are terrifying, but my attempt at it always somehow wanders down to New Jersey.
My World, by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd
A controversial choice! I asked Max why he preferred the companion book to the original classic. He asked if he could have a cookie. I told him he already had his cookie. He informed me that was a snack, and didn’t count. I can sense a budding genius for criticism already.

New Release Day
On this week's edition of New Release Day, we're excited to present:
Bright Baby Grip: It's Time to Sleep by Roger Priddy: This is a great book for the little ones at bedtime. There's a handle for them to carry it off to bed themselves, and inside are bright photgraphs of bedtime objects with simple one word labels to build vocabulary.
Takedown Twenty by Janet Evanovich: This is the twentieth book in the Stephanie Plum series, and honestly, if you need more explanation than that, you have clearly not read a mystery or seen a movie preview in a few years at last.
Hero by Rhonda Byrne: The author of the bestselling The Secret returns with a book on following your dreams.
The Fiery Heart by Richelle Mead: In the fourth book of the Bloodlines series, Sydney has to deal with the consequences of her sister coming to town as Alchemist backup.
Also, Reached by Ally Condie is finally out in paperback. So, if you've been waiting for that, now's your chance.
