Hi! Sorry for bothering. I really liked your Jinx gifset, it's beautiful!! I was wondering if you please could explain how you did the pink/blue outline around her? I tried using stroke option, but it applies to the whole gif instead of the edges of specific object and ticking off the channels in the layer options is giving me a completely different effect :( Thank u!
ahhh, thanks bud! i’m glad you liked that jinx edit!! 💙💙 you’re not bothering at all!! the info is down below under the ‘keep reading’!
for this tutorial, i’ll use the second gif from the jinx edit, since it’s easier to see on the black and white gif because there’s no other competing colours in it!
1) make your gif as per usual, and edit/colour it as to your liking (this is how my gif looks without the pink/blue outlines):
2) next your going to copy and paste the original gif layer two times (so there are 3 gifs of the same scene in total):
3) unclick the eye icon on the top most gif layer (in my case, i clicked the eye icon by ‘layer 3′):
4) double click directly on top of the second gif layer (in my case, i double clicked ‘layer 2′):
5) that will bring up a new box titled ‘layer style’, which automatically opens up ‘blending options’ tab (i don’t click on any other tab, i.e. like you did with stroke, i just stay on this tab the whole time for the pink/blue outlines):
6) here is where you will play around with the outlines (where it says ‘channels:’ and has R, G, B, with little check marks beside them):
7) for the pink outline, uncheck the ‘R’ and the ‘B’ channels (this makes the little grey box under the word ‘preview’ turn into a green box, since only ‘G’ remains check marked):
which in turn makes the gif more pink/purple (can be compared to the screenshot in step 1)
8) click ‘ok’ to apply only the ‘G’ channel to the gif and move the gif over a bit so you can actually see the lines (i.e. move the ‘G’ channel gif 5 shifts to the right and 5 shifts down, etc.):
9) as you can see, there’s green in here that i don’t have on my jinx edit that’s because the ‘G’ channel controls both the green and pink highlights, so you’ll have to double click once again on the second gif layer (in my case, ‘layer 2′):
which once again opens up the ‘layer style’ box that is automatically opened on the ‘blending options’ tab
10) now you’re going to play around with the layer colouring themselves (i kept these 2 steps together because i usually just do them together instead of applying the colouring and then clicking again to apply another one):
for the gray colours titled ‘this layer’, i moved the arrow from the white towards the middle (where it now reads ‘138′ instead of ‘255′) because it gets rid of the green (if i had done it from the left, it would’ve removed the pink)
now you can see the green is much less vibrant than the green in step 8
then after that was complete, i went to the ‘underlying layer’ gray colours, where i moved the opposite arrow (the dark gray arrow towards the middle, now reads ‘82′ instead of ‘0′) so it could get rid of basically all the left over green (there’s still a bit but i didn’t mind that at all since it’s barely noticeable)
and that’s the pink outline done! now i could’ve left it here and said this gif was complete, but because that gifset was all about the pink and the blues, i wanted to add a blue outline as well.
11) click the empty box (that you had previously unclicked in step 3) on the top most gif layer (in my case, i click the empty box by ‘layer 3′ so the eye icon appears once again):
12) you’re going to follow steps 4 - 10 all over again but now when you get to step 7, you’re going to uncheck the ‘R’ and the ‘G’ channels so only the ‘B’ channel remains check marked and keep going until you get to step 10
i hope this made sense! like i said in my jinx typography tutorial, i know it might seem like a lot but when you do this over and over again, you become so quick at completing it that it doesn’t even seem like you’re doing this many steps when you get the end result! i also explained everything in full detail (like even the small steps that you already seem to know, i.e. double clicking on the layer to get the ‘layer style’ box, etc).
send me another ask if you need any clarification or more help on anything above and i’ll try to help out as best as i’m able to, bud!
hi! how did you do the typography in that jinx gif set? it's really pretty
ahhh thank you so much, bud!! i’m glad you liked it 💙💙 i’ve provided the info down below! just as an aside, i will mention that i use photoshop so i’m not too sure how this would be done on any other editing platform!
the steps are found under the ‘keep reading’!
for that edit, i used 3 different fonts in total: capappa, al nevrada, and antro vectra
i either made the fonts completely white in font colour (i.e. the first gif, the words ‘are you’ and ‘like me?’) or i used a gradient or colour overlay to change specific ones (i.e. colour overlay: the first gif, the words ‘insane’ and ‘pain’ | gradient overlay: the second gif)
for the gradient/colour overlay, the steps are the pretty much the same, as shown below:
1) make your gif as per usual, and edit/colour it as to your liking
(note: i personally like to make all my gifs first before i even start on any typography)
2) make layers for each & every different font or ‘colour/gradient overlay’ choice
(in my case, the words ‘are you like me?’ are done in the same font & overlay so it’s one layer while the word ‘insane’ is it’s own layer because that’s what i want to change without changing the other words)
3) change the font colour to white for all the fonts (i.e. for the first gif, the words ‘are you like me?’ and the word ‘insane’)
4) change the font’s setting from ‘normal’ to ‘difference’ (found on right side of ps)
this makes all the letters/words in the layer turn to the opposite/opposing colours against the gif (i.e. the word ‘insane’ now is no longer white in colour & is instead the opposite colours of the gif - green overtop the magenta, yellow overtop the blue)
5) double click directly on the font layer you want to add a colour/gradient overlay to (in my case, i double clicked on the ‘insane’ layer)
6) that will bring up a new box titled ‘layer style’, which is where the colour/gradient overlays come into play (as you can see, ‘colour overlay’ tab was used in the font of the first gif but the tab below titled ‘gradient overlay’ was used on the font in the 2nd gif of my gifset)
7) click on the ‘colour overlay’ tab (or ‘gradient overlay’ tab, whichever one you want to use)
8) choose whatever font colour you want (in my case, the word ‘insane’ was made into a deep blue - i pick a colour from the gif itself so it matches the gif)
(for gradient overlay, there a few more steps involved where you pick more than one colour to make the ‘gradient’ & change the 'style’ to whichever one you want the gradient to be on on your font)
9) play around with blend mode to see which works the best against your gif
(i like to play around with all to see which one i like the most but my go to modes are: darken, multiply, colour burn, linear burn, darker colour, colour, or sometimes hard mix or vivid light - but, again, it depends what looks good against your edit or what kind of blend you want on your font, each gif is different so never assume it’s going to be the same on each one)
(in my case for the first gif, i used ‘colour burn’ on the word ‘insane’ but i used ‘hard mix’ on the word ‘pain’ because those two blends matched the gifs the best)
10) optional: i like to add some type of shadow (either the ‘drop shadow’ or ‘inner shadow’ tabs) so it really makes the font stand out against the gif
(in my case, i used ‘drop shadow’ in this entire gifset but i’ve used ‘inner shadow’ before (this edit - in the first edit of this set, the words ‘pirate hunter’ have an inner shadow displayed on them)
11) you repeat steps 2-9 (plus 10 if you want) to all the layers you want to add some colour on and then you’re done!
this was my final gif:
hopefully this made sense and i was able to help you out, bud! i know that this seems like a lot but when you do this over and over again, the process flies by.
if you want more help, want to clarify anything i’ve mentioned above, or even want any steps on a specific gif from the set (or any other edits by me, for that matter), just send me another ask & i’ll try to explain as best as i can!
