It was never a dull day when you had Rokuta around. Not even on a day like today, when the sky was gray and overcast, and the thick smell of rain hung in the air.
It had rained heavily all through the night, and well into the morning—finally letting up around lunchtime so you could finally meet with Rokuta and go out together like you had planned to, though you hadn’t the slightest clue what you might do now that the weather had spoiled your usual plans. You were, however, determined not to let that stop you. You slipped into your shoes by your front door and marched on toward the playground you usually met at.
When you arrived at the playground, Rokuta was already there waiting for you—he wasn’t hard to spot, after all, being so tall. Not to mention the way he was waving and calling your name from where he stood.
“I hope you weren’t waiting long!” You smiled apologetically as you closed the distance between the two of you, feeling something warm blossom in your chest when you saw his bright smile at last.
“Mm-mm! I just got here!” He spoke as he shook his head. “But…what should we do today?” He asked, looking around. “Everything’s all wet…” He muttered.
You thought you would have had an idea by now, truthfully. All you could do was smile sheepishly, starting to feel a little bad now that you both had come all the way out here with nothing to really do.
Then, you saw it.
Soft chirps had caught your attention, and you looked over to see little birds hopping around a puddle, dipping their feathers in and shaking themselves dry again. Rokuta followed your line of vision, face lighting up at the sight of the little creatures using the water on the ground for a bath.
Rokuta laughed softly. “It looks like they’re having fun!”
You nodded in agreement, and memories from when you were young resurfaced. “I don’t think I’ve done that since I was little.”
Rokuta looked at you with a puzzled expression. “Done what?” He asked, tilting his head just slightly.
You smiled, and turned yourself in the opposite direction, spotting the perfect puddle before you took off running. “Jumped in them!” You giggled as you took a small leap and water splashed up all around you. “I used to do it all the time when it rained. Sometimes, I’d walk to the convenience store just to jump around in the puddles on the way…though, thinking about it, I’m sure they didn’t like having a kid tracking water all over the store.” Looking back, you felt a little bad about it now.
“Hmm…”
“Oh, s-sorry,” you blurted. “I must look silly, being this old and—”
“Wanna go, then?” Rokuta beamed at you, like he had just had the greatest idea.
“Go…? Huh?” You blinked in surprise as he bounded towards you like an excited puppy.
“To the convenience store! We can walk together and get some snacks while we decide what to do next.” He rocked on his heels, which you took as a sign that he was eager to make the trip.
You agreed to his whims enthusiastically, setting off for the nearest store with Rokuta right at your side, doing his best to match your pace.
It wasn’t long before Rokuta had let out a delighted sound, leaping ahead of you to land in a small puddle on the sidewalk. Then, he jumped into the next one, and the one after that. It hadn’t really hit you until now that this might have been new to him; how many times had Rokuta missed jumping into puddles? How many rainy days had passed when he couldn’t take a walk to a corner store and track wet shoe prints across the floor while looking for his favorite snack?
The thought made your heart ache, though not for long, as his laughter broke up the looming sadness that had begun to take up space in your mind. Seeing Rokuta have so much fun, and be free of worry like this was all the reassurance you needed. Rather than mourn what he had missed, you decided to help him make up for it now. The two of you took turns jumping into puddles along the way, not minding the curious stares of strangers as you neared your destination. After all, they didn’t see what you did—the pure joy on Rokuta’s face was more than worth a moment of judgement from someone you would never see again.
Coming up on a part of the sidewalk that dipped inward, a small pool had formed there after the rain, larger and deeper than anything you had stomped through on the way. You stood still, happy to let Rokuta get a head start, and to avoid getting splashed, but Rokuta had other plans, it seemed.
“Let’s go!” He cheered, taking your hand in his and tugging you along.
All you could do was gasp in surprise as your fingers instinctively weaved between his, and warmth spread from your palm to your chest as you ran together, jumping into the puddle with him and feeling the familiar cold of wet clothes. You looked down to see dark splotches across the fabric as it clung to your legs, though you didn’t mind the slight chill—it was a fair price to pay, you thought, for what you believed was the most wonderful smile you would ever see, innocent and unrestrained, and horribly infectious. The two of you burst into a fit of giggles at the sight of one another, hands still gently clasped as water seeped into one of your socks.
“We’re a mess now, huh…” You chided playfully, looking up from his legs to meet his gaze. “Sorry I got your clothes wet.” You muttered, hoping his brother wouldn’t be upset when he got home.
“I’m having fun, so I don’t mind!” You felt his hand squeeze just slightly around yours, and you knew he was being careful so he didn’t hurt you. “I am kinda hungry now though…” He looked towards the brightly lit sign above the convenience store.
You smiled. “Me too, actually,” you squeezed his hand back. “Let’s go.” You coaxed as you took the first step forward and Rokuta began naming things he might want or hoped they had, lightly swinging your arms between you as you walked the last few paces together.
“Ah!” Rokuta pointed excitedly to a brightly colored display as the door opened. “That one sounds really good, huh?”
You expected to feel a rush of cold air to your palm as his attention was swept away by row after row of neatly organized snacks and drinks, but it remained snugly pressed up against his as he all but pulled you along, leaving two sets of wet shoe prints in your wake.
