“It wasn’t that Rollond was bitter about it, because, well, he wasn’t—or so he told himself—bitter at all. It was just that he missed Karl, more than he ever thought he would. Reckless love led to the worst heartbreaks, and that felt a bit too harsh of a lesson to learn at the tender age of sixteen.”
hi welcome to brotherband i’ll be your local angst maniac for today
i’m writing yet a n o t h e r rollond fic because i too am bi and sad and a little bit stupid with a strong desire for weaponry. this one in particular is all about his various failed romantic escapades and heartbreaks and i ended up making a fairly quote-able quote, so here we are now.
karl belongs to @smug-albatross, who i am also now dedicating this edit to bc i love them very much
But before he could counterattack, a spear thrust past him from behind and to his right, slamming into the small shield of the suddenly terrified attacker. The Temujai reeled back under the impact, taking two of his companions with him. Along the wall, there were sudden cries of alarm from the Temujai troops as more and more Skandian warrior appreared, as if from nowwhere - dozens of fresh warriors who went at the Temujai with swords, axes and spears, driving them back in confusion. Thorn looked round to see Rollond's grinning face a few metres away.
"Hal said you might need a little help," Rollond said.
Tbh this book isnt one of my faves. Idk, theres so much happening and at the same time so little... Also I feel like the whole problem was solved a little too easily? That being said, Rollond turning up like that was still great, and there were a couple moments in this book that made me laugh. Like Ulf telling a very baffled Wulf that he knew a horse who could count to 18, not using his fingers. And that moment when Hal beaches the Heron at the end was heartbreaking...
I'm not entirely sure on Rollond though... I don't really have a strong mental image of what I wanted him to look like... So this is him for now, but he might change completely if I decide to draw him again. I do think he'd be growing a beard...
If you're still doing it,10. “Always have an escape plan.”21. “That’s beyond stupid. He’s created a new kind of stupid.” 22. “I’m just here to establish an alibi.” with Lydia and Jesper with Rolland at a bar doing illegal stuff for Hal
I started to write for 10, but then it turned into a full length fic, so that’ll be up pretty soon instead of a drabble. Sorry! Here’s 21 and 22 though!
21. “That’s beyond stupid. He’s created a new kind of stupid.”
“That’s beyond stupid. He’s created a new kind of stupid.” Ulf crossed his arms and stared directly at Wulf.
"Please don't talk to me like I'm not here. Edvin, please inform my brother that I do not appreciate the tone he has taken towards me." Wulf mirrored his brother's actions. Edvin didn't make a sound; there was no way he was getting in the middle of this fight. Alas, the twins were going to drag him into it.
"Edvin, would you kindly tell Wulf that he has disrespected me for the last time and I am telling mom about it?"
"No, Edvin, tell Ulf that I will be telling mom about his hurtful actions."
That's the last straw. "For Gorlog's sake! Will you both just stop for once?"
The twins stared at Edvin; they had never heard him yell before.
"Ulf, you realize Wulf was literally just trying to get some rope for you and got sidetracked. He was trying to be nice for once. Wulf, you should know better to try and do fancy knots to impress girls. It always ends up with you forgetting how to untie yourself and the girl leaving."
Ulf had to contain a snicker at the mention of Wulf's unfortunate bout of stupidity. Edvin glared at him.
"Wulf may have been stupid, but I remember very vividly that the same thing happened to you Ulf, last week except Wulf wasn't there to see it."
Now both the twins were flushed with embarrassment and Edvin felt an uncharacteristic twinge of pride at shutting down the argument. Normally Ingvar handled all things twin related and Edvin didn't know why that was. If the Herons could get the twins to stop arguing with words, then there was no need to waste time by throwing them in the water.
Edvin was too busy congratulating himself to notice the twins nodding at each other and sneaking up to grab him, aiming to dun him in the shallow river ahead.
As Edvin comes spluttering out of the cool water, he remembers there's a reason why Hal has Ingvar throw the twins in the water. Ulf and Wulf fight dirty when humiliated.
22. “I’m just here to establish an alibi.” with Lydia and Jesper with Rolland at a bar doing illegal stuff for Hal
It's Frigg's Day and Rollond and the Wolves are in port tavern a ways away from Hallasholm. There was business to take care of in the dock master's office, something about a misplaced license that Rollond was happy to report had only been misfiled, and so the Wolves had left Rollond to roam about town. Now, Rollond didn't know exactly where his friends were, but the local tavern is a good place to hunker down and hope that they arrive soon. Rollond expects he'll grab some stew and maybe arm wrestle a few guys, but there was no way in Gorlog's green earth that he was expecting to see Lydia and Jesper dancing wildly and furiously on the tavern floor. Rollond wades through the massive crowd because honestly, he has to see this up close.
Lydia exits the floor, nearly collapsing on a table and Jesper follows. They brighten up when they see Rollond.
"I didn't think you guys were the wild tavern party type!" Rollond shouted over the noise. Well, maybe Jesper, but not Lydia.
"You're in here too!" She shouts back. Jesper is too busy dancing and talking up the people around him to respond.
Lydia has a point.
"Would you believe me if I said I'm just here to establish an alibi?" Rollond says joking, hoping to get a chuckle out of his friends because clearly the only reason Rollond would be at this tavern was if he was about to commit a crime and not, you know, waiting for his brotherband.
His remark doesn't achieve the desired effect as Lydia and Jesper do not laugh and instead give each other shifty eyed stares
"How'd you know that's what we're doing?" hissed Lydia.
Rollond does a double take at that. "What?" He hadn't been serious about the alibi stuff.
Jesper pulls him in closer. "Shhh, keep your voice down. Do you want us to get thrown out?"
"What?" Rollond can only repeat his previous statement.
"Jesper, chill. I got this." Lydia sweeps Rollond into some sort of very aggressive jig and Rollond wonders if he was transported into another world or maybe a dream. In the middle of dancing (flailing around is a more accurate way to describe it), Lydia explains patiently to her confused friend.
"This tavern is owned by a bunch of crooks who have taken some…" Lydia paused here, perhaps to catch her breath. "They've taken some things from our friends, let's go with that."
If Rollond was confused before, now he's just concerned. Lydia keeps on explaining and Jesper spills a tankard on the floor, the drink pooling at their feet.
"Jesper, Wulf, and I are here to keep people's attention down here and not upstairs where Hal and Ulf are taking back the aforementioned things."
Wulf was here? Rollond hadn't even noticed the guy, but he cast a look around and saw that Wulf was indeed there and trying to throw darts at a board. Lydia must think Rollond still looks confused because suddenly she grins and dips him, leaning in as she does so.
"If Hal and Ulf are caught, there will be two witnesses that will swear that they saw Hal and someone look exactly like Ulf in the tavern all night and boom, we have an alibi."
"And if that doesn't work?" It's very dubious that the plan will work and Rollond has a feeling Lydia knows that. She shrugs.
"If that doesn't work, Jesper and I are the fastest sprinters and we have a bunch of armed Skandian raiders waiting outside, ready to storm at our signal."
There's nothing Rollond can say that will properly convey what he's feeling and how much of a bad idea he thinks this plan is, so all he says is "Do you another witness who will make a fool out of himself and make a scene?" He figures it'll be more fun than silently waiting for the Wolves to appear.
Identical grins appear on Lydia and Jesper's faces and Rollond knows he's in for an interesting evening.
