The use of human heads as local ritual offering appears to have continued in the Roman settlement of Londinium. This one was deposited as an offering in a stream. Other offerings include stone and wooden effigies and heads, although very few of these have survived.
Of the 52 skeletons found in Great Whelnetham, 40% had their skulls placed by or between their legs.
Archaeologists excavating a Roman burial ground said the discovery of a series of decapitated bodies was a "rare find".
A dig has been taking place on a site in Great Whelnetham, Suffolk, ahead of a planned housing development.

The Rossington Bridge Roman Dagger, Doncaster Museum and Gallery, Yorkshire, 29.7.18. A Roman soldier lost the dagger in the waters and marshland near Rossington Bridge Roman fort. The iron dagger had a bone handle which consisted of several parts, each separated by the iron washers on the existing tang which can still be seen. The dagger also had a wooden and leather sheath and part of the original wood still exists on the blade.
