There’s my book in the Mack Library!
In October 2015, Gary Weier said that:
The president of SACS thought that the application was of such a quality she actually approved it herself rather than it going to the board which was very encouraging to us.
In February 2016, Steve Pettit announced:
The [SACSCOC] committee believes that BJU is ready for candidacy.
In November 2016, Larry Jackson told the BJU employees:
the SACSCOC Committee Chair, Vice President Dr. Mary Kirk, was so impressed by BJU’s performance this week that she “hugged us all” and gushed about Bob Jones University.
And now in March 2017, Gary Weier is repeating the same mythology:
At the exit interview, the committee chair stated BJU had achieved a remarkable outcome.
She commended BJU in three areas: “our remarkable and impressive faculty and their deep commitment to BJU’s mission,” “our wonderful students,” and our clear and thorough documentation of what we do here at BJU.
Our SACSCOC vice president called the outcome of the visit “phenomenal” and said we should be jumping up and down.
“Jumping up and down.” Bob Jones University “should be jumping up and down.”
Are we still believing this? That the most formidable organization in the southeast higher ed is giving hugs to Larry Jackson and telling Gary he should jump up and down he did so well?
Really? SACSCOC caught BJU in the lie from February. That’s why they had to edit the newsletter.
Every six months or so Bob Jones University has to foreground a story about how much SACSCOC is in love with Bob Jones University. Is it?
Steve Pettit’s answer to “Where do we get students?” Branding!
Make our brand very clear.
Yes. Clarify the brand of Bob Jones University. Because people don’t know the brand.
We can continue to build on our constituency along with reaching out to those who would be attracted to us but do not know who we are.
BJU has made this assumption -- “We are just misunderstood!” -- for decades. Oh, if they could just show people how attractive they really are!
