'Legacies' season 2: All the possible love triangle candidates Hope and Landon could be involved with including Josie and Rafael
It would not be a Julie Plec show unless it has multiple, heartbreaking love triangles. Here's a look at some potential candidates who could come in between Hope and Landon as Hope returns to a world that doesn't remember her.
When 'Legacies' ended its first season, Hope, played by Danielle Rose Russell, had sacrificed herself to destroy Malivore and save everyone around her. Before the tribrid went off to save the day, she instructed Alaric to destroy everything that would leave behind clues of her existence — she knew that destroying Malivore would end up erasing her from everyone's memories.
Which means that if and when Hope does come back without everyone's memories being restored, she could see her friends live their lives as if she was never a part of them. When Russell spoke to MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) previously, she said that Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) moving on in a world without Hope hurts her even though she knows it is logical. It was also teased that season two would see Hope going beyond Landon, and with a handful of new characters coming to the show and Russel stating that she would like to see Hope exploring her sexuality, the possibilities are endless.
Here's a look at the possible love triangles the spinoff from 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals' might come up with in the upcoming season:
Hope, Landon and Rafael
The most obvious triangle staring at fans in the face is the love triangle between Landon, Hope, and Rafael. Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) is Landon's foster brother, giving us vibes of the original and certainly most famous love triangle of this universe — Stefan, Elena, and Damon. By the end of season one, we knew that Rafael definitely has feelings for Hope and that she is aware of them. As the season ended, Raf was stuck in his wolf form since he would need Hope to bring him back to his human self. Could this mean Raf is the only one who remembers Hope? If he does, having seen Landon move on, Hope could gravitate towards Raf when she is back in Mystic Falls.
Hope could gravitate towards Raf when she is back in Mystic Falls
Hope, Josie and Landon
'Hopie' may not be canon but that has not stopped fans and even the actors who play Hope and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) from shipping the two characters. When Josie confessed that she used to have a crush on Hope in episode 12 of season one ('There's a Mummy on Main Street'), fans were delighted when Hope responded with a smile "You had a crush on me?", leaving many viewers agreeing that 'Hopie' is the real endgame.
Season two might see Hope and Josie finally explore what could be there between them. However, there are also some theorizing that Landon could have moved on with Josie, with both feeling the emptiness of a breakup (Hope and Penelope Park respectively). This love triangle might be messy, but it is sure to be a popular one.
Hope, Lizzie and Landon
While Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) may not have been on the best terms with Hope in season one, we see her attitude towards Hope improving in later episodes. While Landon and Lizzie may not seem the obvious pairing (but hey, anything could be possible in a world where no one remembers Hope), 'Hizzie' has been gaining traction among the viewers.
Hope, Clarke and Landon
In the last episode of the first season, Hope performs a mimic spell on Clarke, Landon's "brother" (Nick Fink) that forces him to do exactly as she does, meaning that Clarke is in the mystery world with Hope. In an interview with TV Guide, Julie Plec stated that Hope and Clarke being stuck together is going to remind fans of Damon and Bonnie's time in the prison world together from 'The Vampire Diaries'. While Damon and Bonnie did not end up together, could Hope develop a better understanding of Clarke during her time with him and therefore develop feelings for him? After all, Damon and Klaus earned their redemptions. Why not Clarke?
Hope, Landon and someone new
We know of at least three new characters that are going to appear in season two. Thomas Doherty (from 'Descendents 2') is set to play Sebastian, a vampire from the 15th Century who is going to be 'Legacies' Damon-equivalent. While Sebastian is touted to be Lizzie's potential love interest, he could also stir up some trouble for Hope and Landon.
The two other characters known to appear in season two are the brother-sister pair played by Bianca Santos and Leo Howard, both of whom are said to harbor a crush on Hope and therefore likely candidates for the potential love triangle(s) in season two.
We know of at least three new characters that are going to appear in season two
Of course, the love triangles on 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals' expanded to include more corners (Stefan Salvatore himself was involved in four separate love triangles), so season two could potentially see multiple triangles come to fruition. With Julie Plec hinting at the possibilities of old characters returning, we could expect even Penelope Park (Lulu Antariksa) or Roman Sienna (Jedidiah Goodacre) to get into the mix.
"The Vampire Diaries" Spinoff Just Gave Us An Amazing Caroline And Klaus Easter Egg And I'm CRYING SO.
SO. MANY. KLAROLINE. FEELINGS.
Hi, hello, so one of my absolute favorite teen TV shows has always been The Vampire Diaries.
And even though The Vampire Diaries has ended, it's been awesome to watch its legacy continue on the new spinoff series, Legacies.
For those who aren't keeping up with Legacies, the show follows Hope Mikaelson, and Lizzie and Josie Saltzman as they attend the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.
And since the show premiered, the writers have constantly been giving fans little details and Easter eggs from TVD, but in the latest episode, they gifted us with an emotional one dedicated to Caroline and Klaus's relationship.
The annual tradition of Miss Mystic Falls continued on Legacies with Josie and Hope both competing in the pageant.
While getting ready, Lizzie ended up gifting Hope a dress from her mother, Caroline
Lizzie may not have known the importance of the dress right then, but TVD fans know that it's the dress that Klaus gave Caroline back in Season 3.
I mean, the scene where Caroline and Klaus danced together at the Mikaelson's ball was an iconic moment for the show and for "Klaroline" fans.
The dress being uncovered also means that Caroline kept it all these years and yes, I'm sobbing over it.
But wait, that's not all! Later in the episode, Josie reveals to Lizzie the true origin of the dress and why it's also incredibly important to Hope.
In case you need a refresher, The Originals ended last year with Klaus dying after saving Hope's life.
Hope overhears Josie and Lizzie's conversation and finally lets out all of the grief she's been keeping inside over the death of both Klaus and her mom, Hayley.
So, after this emotional rollercoaster, I'll be watching literally every Caroline and Klaus scene on a loop today, because they totally should've ended up together.
Which is your favorite one?.
Legacies Star Talks Hope's New Ally, Roman's Return and 3 Other Twists
The annual Miss Mystic Falls pageant arrived on Thursday’s Legacies, bringing with it all the requisite drama — and leaving several fan-favorite pairings in serious jeopardy. (Hey, at least no one died this time.)
Lizzie initially had her heart set on Caroline’s former title, but when she discovered that Dana’s mother was one of the judges, she decided — much to Josie’s disappointment — that Hope was her best chance to “stick it to those townies” with a win. (Does anyone else think it’s weird that Lizzie is so anti-townie, considering she was also born and raised in Mystic Falls?) Anyway, Penelope tried to convince Josie to beat Hope, but Josie was too loyal to her sister to mess up her master plan. Furious with Josie for once again putting Lizzie first, Penelope started spilling a bunch of secrets she’s collected as of late… including that she should ask Alaric about “the merge.” Gulp.
But before Penelope left school, breaking Josie’s heart in the process (that L-bomb!), she also revealed to Landon that Hope has been lying about meeting his mother — not that “Lope” needed any more drama this week, what with Roman showing up out of the blue. (Really, Alaric? You couldn’t have hired literally anyone else?) This set off a dramatic chain of events: Landon storming out, Roman filling in as Hope’s escort, Josie calling Lizzie out for being heartless, and even Hope discovering that her dress was picked out by Klaus. The tension culminated in an emotional outburst from Hope, guided by Lizzie, who’s all too familiar with the magical side effects of trauma. Lizzie even made her a deal: “You help me get Josie back, I’ll help you get Landon.”
And speaking of getting Landon, Hope’s angry ex(?)-boyfriend ended the episode in Agent Clark’s custody, delivered by MG’s mom, who’s apparently Clark’s superior. I have to admit, it was a twist I didn’t see coming — mostly because we’d spent most of the episode worrying about the freaking Gorgon skulking around campus and turning people into stone.
Below, Danielle Rose Russell breaks down the episode’s biggest moments with TVLine, including how Roman — despite, you know, his involvement in Hayley’s death — remains a very real threat to Hope and Landon’s relationship…
TVLINE | First of all, congratulations on winning Miss Mystic Falls. How was your brief experience as a pageant girl?
[Laughs] Thanks. It’s definitely something I never want to revisit. We did that whole thing in one day, and by the end, I was just like, “I never want to see this dress again, I never want to hear ‘Miss Mystic Falls’ again, and I never want to be in another pageant.”
Legacies Miss Mystic FallsTVLINE | Was that the actual dress Caroline wore on The Vampire Diaries, or did they design a replica?
It was the actual dress! They got it from the Warner Brothers. archive. But the problem is, the dress was made for Candice [King], who’s about seven inches taller than me. We had to be so specific about how we shot the dress. The costume team and I did hours of fittings, trying to get it OK. For example, we couldn’t shoot it from the side, because I have about four inches of toile alone on the front and back of me. So we could only show it from the front, or else I’d look like the girl from Willy Wonka who turns into a blueberry.
TVLINE | I never thought I’d see Hope and Lizzie getting along so well. Could this be the end of their life-long feud?
You know, it could be. I was also very surprised, because in the beginning of the season, everybody thought Hope and Josie would be the ones becoming friends. I was also surprised by how much Hope and Lizzie have in common, while still being so different. They annoy each other, but they also put up with each other. It’s a fun relationship that I’d like to see explored a little bit more in Season 2.
TVLINE | Then again, I never thought I’d see Hope getting along with Roman either. Were you surprised by her behavior?
Very much so. In my head, I always want Hope to get revenge, but she really has worked so hard [to improve herself]. In the last episode, you saw that even in the middle of a dark, painful moment — seeing Landon dead — she still gave MG her blood. She had a moment of understanding that she doesn’t want to be another vengeful Mikaelson. She wants to be good, and she’s always fighting for that. You could see that Hope had a tough time coming to terms with Roman. There’s a reason why she never talks about it, but I think she has genuinely forgiven him and she’s moving on from that.
TVLINE | I guess when you’re a Mikaelson, you get used to encountering people who have murdered your relatives.
Exactly! It just happens.
TVLINE | We didn’t see Roman leave. Is he sticking around?
You’ll see him again a little bit. That relationship will come to a head, as well.
TVLINE | I get that Landon was insecure, but is there any world in which Hope genuinely sees Roman as a potential love interest?
I don’t know. I go back and forth about it, actually. I always thought the dynamic between Hope, Roman and Landon would be an interesting love triangle. So I do have an idea in my mind of how that would happen, but I’m keeping it to myself in case it does. In Hope’s right mind, I’ll say, there would be no world. But Hope is also not a vampire yet, but she could be. There are many mistakes she could make if things go sour.
TVLINE | Lastly, let’s talk about Penelope, who blew up multiple people’s lives this week. How do you feel about everything she did, and the character in general?
The relationship between Josie and Penelope, to me, has always been fascinating. I’m interested to see the fans’ reaction to Penelope leaving, though I do think that’s sort of the only way that relationship could have gone. In order to give Josie what she deserves, all of this had to happen. So I don’t hate Penelope. I think she was super clever and smart, and I was always interested to see what she would pull out of her hat. She obviously also hurt Landon and Hope’s relationship, but the truth had to come out eventually.
‘Legacies’: Danielle Rose Russell on Miss Mystic Falls, the Finale, and All That Screaming
In the latest episode of The CW series Legacies, entitled “Let’s Just Finish the Dance,” the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, and all of the competition and stress that accompanies it, forced Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) to deal with all of the emotions that she’s been trying to compartmentalize for some time now. And with the fallout of her actions leaving her and Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) on the outs, Hope will turn to Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) to help her make things right.
During this 1-on-1 phone interview with Collider, actress Danielle Rose Russell (who has given a terrific and beautifully nuanced performance this season) talked about Hope’s participation in the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, what she thought about the meaning behind the special dress that Hope wore, the dynamic between Hope and Lizzie, why she only screams once per season, Hope and Landon’s relationship, her reaction to learning about what Landon actually is, why she loves the idea of Hosie (Hope and Josie), how she feels about the season finale, and what she’s most enjoyed about Hope’s journey this season.
Collider: Clearly, Hope has been having a rough time of things lately, with everything that she’s been going through. So, do all of those bad things help make the fact that she has to be in the Miss Mystic Falls pageant seem a little less awful, or does it just feel like the cherry on top of the awfulness cake?
DANIELLE ROSE RUSSELL: I think she thinks that it’s gonna help her, which is why she even agreed to do it and doesn’t put up much of a fight because, more than anything, she really needs to be distracted. But, it definitely is the cherry on top of the awfulness cake.
As much as she protests all of this, do you think Hope also is at least a tiny bit secretly happy that she decided to do this pageant?
RUSSELL: I think that there’s a part of her that allows herself to pay tribute to the Mikaelson way. The Mikaelsons were always throwing balls and parties and extravagant get-togethers, or whatever you want to call them, so there’s a part of her that allows herself to be into that a little bit. Of course, she is very much a girl, and I think that she does like to get into a dress and put her make-up on and do her hair. But honestly, she probably mostly wants nothing to do with this. It’s just that, with all of the things that have happened recently, she’s almost forced to do it. She has no other choice.
In order to win this pageant, she finds herself taking advice from Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), which just doesn’t seem like it can go well. What did you enjoy about getting to explore what the two of them can accomplish together, when they’re not annoying each other?
RUSSELL: You see how they do help each other. It’s definitely an interesting dynamic that has mostly occurred off screen. When Legacies picked up, we never really saw the history between both of the twins. There are definitely more developments that need to happen, with both of the twins, though Hope’s relationship with Lizzie does become significant and they do help each other out, in the face of danger. I always think it’s really nice to see characters band together and fight for what they all believe in.
It’s certainly cathartic, any time you have a lot of stress and things going on, to just go into a wide open space and scream. What was it like to shoot that, and how many times did you have to scream?
RUSSELL: Well, I did a lot of screaming in The Originals, and I hurt my voice so badly that I said, “I can’t scream, if you want me to be able to work, for like the next three days.” So, what I usually do is that I scream once in the season, and we’ll just use that scream, all throughout, or extend it, or do whatever we need to do. And then, I open my mouth and pretend like I’m screaming, the whole time. So, it’s a little secret, but in order to save my voice and work, I couldn’t actually scream.
I love that the dress Hope wears for Miss Mystic Falls turns out to have more meaning than even she realizes. What was your own personal reaction to learning about the dress that you’d be wearing and what the meaning was behind it?
RUSSELL: I was definitely surprised. I did a lot of thinking about it because, to me, it didn’t really seem like something that would cause the reaction that it did. I realized that it wasn’t just the dress. It was so many more things that had happened to Hope, between Landon and all of these different things that had happened that really forced her to just cry. The dress is just a literal reminder of the fact that she doesn’t have her dad, who is the person that she probably would have gone to about something like this. She doesn’t really have anyone, so it’s like seeing a little girl just needing her dad. The dress just happened to be playing that role. But it was definitely a process to try to get the dress to work because, obviously, it was made for someone seven inches taller than I am. I’m actually very short, so it was definitely a struggle. Our fashion department spent countless hours trying to make it work, and it did.
When you’re doing a Miss Mystic Falls episode, because it has played such a role in the lifespan of this universe, do you feel an extra sense of responsibility, in doing your version of that?
RUSSELL: Yeah. On the day of shooting it, I was like, “Oh, I’m Miss Mystic Falls.” I watched that episode of The Vampire Diaries when I was 11 years old, so on that day of shooting, I was like, “I’m Miss Mystic Falls. This is a little weird.” How life comes full circle, sometimes. Our director, Geoff Shotz, has done three other Miss Mystic Falls episodes, so I was jaded about the dress and he was jaded over doing the episode. He was like, “I can’t, with Miss Mystic Falls. This just never dies.” It was very funny, and we had a lot of fun.
What do you think about the relationship between Hope and Landon, at this point? Are you optimistic for their future, or are you just sort of always waiting for the other shoe to drop, especially on this show?
RUSSELL: I’m definitely always waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I think it’s the relationship that makes the most sense for Hope. Their journey together is gonna be one of ups and downs, but I have a lot of hope and faith in their love, and I know that they care for each other. We’ll see what happens with that. It definitely will play a huge part in how the season ends, but for now, just stay tuned.
What was your own reaction to finally learning what Landon actually is?
RUSSELL: I read that script in the hair and make-up trailer, literally seconds after production delivered it to everyone. I skimmed through it and got to the very end, and I literally started to scream. I was like, “Oh, my gosh, you guys aren’t gonna believe what Landon is!” I got everyone so excited about it, and I called Aria because he wasn’t on set. He had gone home because he wasn’t in the episode before that one, and I was like, “You have to call me back, as soon as you can. You’re not gonna believe what you are. It’s so cool!” I’ve been holding in this secret for so long. I’d do interviews and be like, “We’re gonna explore what Landon is, and we’ve never explored it before, in this way.” Now that it’s finally out, I can take a deep breath because everyone is experiencing what I’ve been experiencing for months.
It’s so cool that a universe like this, that’s been around for so many seasons and three different shows, can still find so many new aspects to explore. There’s been so much new stuff, this season, that I never expected, that’s made the show so cool to watch.
RUSSELL: Yes, I think so, too. What was important for Legacies to actually be a successful show is that we had to introduce new mythology. We definitely have, and it still lives in the same world, but these mythological creatures and beings and magic have also existed for millenniums, and they’re now revealing themselves in Legacies. It’s been a lot of fun to explore new mythology.
Are you surprised at how much “Hosie” has become a thing, and how much people are loving the idea of Hope and Josie?
RUSSELL: Yes! We’re very surprised. We talk about it, all the time. It’s funny because Kaylee [Bryant] and I call each other our wives. It’s why we started the whole Hosie thing, and it really caught on with people. We wanted to see that relationship happen when it was right, so in the alternate universe, you saw Hope and Josie get very flirty, I guess you could say. That definitely felt like the right time for that. If it doesn’t make sense, then obviously we would never want anything that doesn’t make sense to be in the show. But I think it definitely fit into the story, as well as it could.
Without giving anything away, what was your reaction, the first time that you read the season finale script? How did you feel about where Hope will be left, at the end of this season?
RUSSELL: I had heard rumors about how our season was gonna end, since the middle the season. We all talked about it and said, “Oh, my god, if the season ends that way, that would be so cool. It makes total sense.” Like everything, so much information had already been revealed, at that point, so it was something that made the most sense, for Hope and this entire world. So, when I finally got the script, I was very, very happy to see that that’s what happens, and I can’t wait for the audience to see it, too. I think it’s gonna really, really shock people.
Over the course of this season, Hope has gone from being totally closed off, emotionally, and pushing everyone away, to having friends, having a boyfriend, and opening herself up enough to actually care for people and to let people care about her. How do you feel about her evolution, this season? What has been your favorite thing about telling her story?
RUSSELL: I’ve really loved her evolution this season. I think that the only way for the character to develop properly, and to do justice to her and her process for what she’s gone through, was for her to love, and to develop relationships and friendships, so I’m happy that she’s beginning to do so. In the beginning of the season, she goes on a journey from being vengeful, and having vengeful reactions to people that have hurt her, to forgiving and to seeing her be loved, and that’s really been beautiful. I hope I can continue to do that. I have a lot of hopes for her, for Season 2, and I’m really excited to see what everyone thinks about how the season ends.
Legacies: 6 huge moments from Lets Just Finish This Dance
It’s time for the annual Miss Mystic Falls pageant on this week’s episode of Legacies. Let’s look at the six biggest moments from the episode.
Last episode of Legacies features the return of an age-old tradition, the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. It’s the Salvatore School’s turn to host and Lizzie intended on being the belle of the ball. Then Dana’s mother turns up and makes it clear she doesn’t care for Lizzie one bit because her former-now-dead-nemesis, poisoned her mother against her.
A change of plans is then in order. To ensure the Salvatore School takes home a win, Lizzie puts all her eggs in Hope’s basket instead of her own sister’s!
The pageant isn’t the only big event this week, several surprising guests make return visits – some good, and some bad. Here are the six biggest moments from “Let’s Just Finish the Dance”.
6. Roman returns.
Remember Roman? Hope’s ex-boyfriend with the Nazi mother who was responsible for killing Hayley? He returns this week to add a fresh new obstacle to Hope and Landon’s relationship. Jealousy rears its ugly head when Landon spots Roman.
It doesn’t help that Hope insists on defending him. She doesn’t blame him for her mother’s death anymore and feels he has made amends by assisting Alaric recruit new students in the years since. I’m not sure if Legacies has more planned for Roman, at present, he’s a plot device to add angst between the show’s main couple.
5. A gorgon is on the prowl.
We meet another supernatural creature this week. She wasn’t drawn to the school by an artifact. Instead, she was sent on a mission issued from Agent Clark to bring Landon to him.
Does Medusa ring a bell? Apart from being a comic book enthusiast and potential love interest for MG, Medusa may be a distant relative. As a gorgon, she is able to turn people into stone and her hair turns into snakes. Alaric and MG’s mother wind up in her crosshairs.
MG is the one who imprisons her – first by doing some research on her weaknesses and saving Landon, they declare themselves “even” after the attack from last week. With Dorian out of the picture (side note: has anyone checked on Emma?) MG got a moment to shine in hunting down the gorgon’s weakness.
4. Jo stands up to Lizzie.
After being coaxed by Penelope all episode to stand up for herself, Jo finally takes her advice and angrily confronts Lizzie about her selfish behavior. Instead of trying to help Josie win after backing out of the pageant, Lizzie immediately focused on Hope and seriously hurt Jo’s feelings.
Lizzie claims she only chose Hope based on science and statistics. Jo asks if she even considered how she might feel being able to wear their mother’s dress or if she considered how Hope would feel if she found out where the dress came from (it was a gift from Klaus to Caroline in The Vampire Diaries episode “Dangerous Liaisons” which is paralleled heavily in this episode).
I feel as if Jo and Lizzie have had this argument before, perhaps this time Lizzie will actually try to make a real change in how she treats her sister.
3. Hope has a breakdown.
The trauma of Landon’s death coupled with residual loss of her family has Hope tightly wound. She’s been having nightmares, lashing out, losing control of her powers, all signs of a supernatural breakdown — which could be catastrophic. Lizzie is a surprising comfort and presence for Hope this week. She recognizes the signs as someone with her own mental instabilities and goes out of her way to support Hope.
At the pageant, Hope learns where Caroline’s dress came from, her father, and it triggers her meltdown at the same moment she is crowned Miss Mystic Falls. Lizzie gives her a hug and encourages her to let it all out, the right way, and Hope has herself a good cry (and so did I, for the first of two times in this episode).
As an aside, why did Hope need Roman to listen in on Jo and Lizzie’s conversation? She has vampire hearing too, doesn’t she?
2. Penelope leaves the Salvatore Boarding School.
Penelope’s mother got a job in Belgium and Penelope will be transferring to an all-witch school located there. You guys, I’m so sad.
All night we spent time with the couple, Penelope kept urging Jo to read the letter she gave her. By the end of the night, when Jo finally reads it and realizes everything Penelope has been saying about her always settling for second best is true, it’s too late.
They exchange a tearful goodbye, “I love you, Jo Jo”, I cried buckets, and Penelope left Jo with an important gift. She spelled pens around the school to spy on everyone’s journal-writing (which is messed up, mind you) and kept her own journal where it was all recorded. Within her secret spy diary, she has record of Alaric writing about the merge! Penelope tells Jo to read it soon because she knows what’s coming and doesn’t want to watch Jo go through it.
Penelope can’t be gone for good, right? What reason do the writers have for putting her on a bus?!
1. Landon finds out the truth about his mom.
Between Roman’s return and finding out Hope remembered meeting Landon’s mom and hid it from him, it was a rough week for Landon and Hope’s relationship. Reeling from the discovery of Hope’s lie, he leaves the school to go on a walk and clear his head.
Barely a few yards out, MG’s mom pulls up and offers him a ride. Landon politely declines but twist! It wasn’t a request. She zaps him and shoves him in her mom van! When Landon wakes up, he’s restrained and sitting in front of Agent Clark near the malivore.
What could they want with a phoenix? And who exactly is MG’s mom? What reason does she have for working with Clark? Also, can we assume the gorgon is dead since Veronica said (quite ominously) she “cleaned up her mess”? Shame, if so, I thought she could become a cute new romance for MG.
What did you think of latest episode? What is the deal with MG’s mom? Will Hope be able to find Landon? Is Penelope really gone for good?
A new episode of Legacies titled “I’ll Tell You a Story” premieres March 21 on The CW.
Legacies star Danielle Rose Russell talks Miss Mystic Falls, Roman’s return
If there’s one thing that’s never changed about the town of Mystic Falls, Va., it’s a love of tradition. And this week’s episode of Legacies confirms that when the Miss Mystic Falls pageant — which first appeared on season 1 of The Vampire Dairies — makes its big return. But as usual, it’s not coming at the best time. Not only did Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) just find out he’s a phoenix, but Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) is still dealing with the fact that, in order to find that out, she had to see Landon die. And to make matters even more complicated, this week also sees the return of Roman (Jedidiah Goodacre), a.k.a. Hope’s ex-boyfriend who played a part in her mother’s murder.
EW hopped on the phone with Russell to talk about how Hope is coping, wearing Caroline’s old dress for Miss Mystic Falls, and all things Roman.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We have to start with last week’s phoenix reveal. What was the reaction on set to that news?
DANIELLE ROSE RUSSELL: We were filming the episode before that, and the script came out and Aria wasn’t on set. He had gone back home for the duration of the episode because he had it off, and I remember I read it in the hair and makeup trailer and I literally freaked out. I texted Aria and was like, “You have to call me when you get a chance! We just found out what you are!” I think him being a phoenix is the coolest thing ever! I’m so happy we can finally talk about it.
Of course, Hope finding out that he’s a phoenix also meant Hope had to spend some time thinking he was dead. How does that reveal and that experience affect her and their relationship?
The thing that Hope fears the most in her life is losing the people that she loves, and when she finally allowed herself to care about Landon and invited him into her life, she lost him, basically. Obviously he comes back, but it was the thing that she fears the most in the world, and honestly, he’s kind of the person she cares about most. She’s lost the closest people in her life. Everything that she’s done has been in order to protect him, so that definitely takes a huge toll on her. She’ll be secretly trying to deal with that in tonight’s episode, but she’s got some PTSD, and that will cause a little bit of tension between these two characters. You look at their dynamic and it’s two beings who are the only one of their kind, a tribrid and a phoenix. That’s a pretty badass couple, don’t get me wrong, but I’m sure there’s a lot of issues there.
And then there’s the Roman factor. How does having him back affect Hope?
In the two years that have gone by since The Originals in Legacies, she has definitely thought a lot about Roman, in the sense that she’s worked really hard to move on from the things that have happened to her. She’s thought a lot about how to view him without having so much vengeance in her heart because Alaric has done a really good job of making sure that she doesn’t turn into her father, and that she keeps good in her heart. So when he does return, it is kind of a shock to her, and it definitely causes a very fun dynamic between Landon, Hope, and Roman.
What’s Hope’s reaction to Miss Mystic Falls?
Hope wants nothing to do with Miss Mystic Falls. [Laughs] Why would she want anything to do with that? She does so much in order to hide every single day, why would she want to be Miss Mystic Falls? She wears Caroline’s dress, which was a fun experience on set. We had to completely rebuild the dress because it was made for someone who is nine inches taller than I am, so there were a lot of alterations, but it was definitely surreal just because I had followed The Vampire Diaries when I was younger and knew all about Miss Mystic Falls. So it was very surreal for me.
