hello! anon here who asked about the appropriate beginnings to a romance novel. must all romance novels end happily? i got struck by the line in your answer where you said romance ---> hea. it's because in mine, the girl and guy doesn't end up but i definitely want to focus on their romance (or at least, how one-sided it is anyway :3).

I’m gonna put my foot down and say, yes.

A romance has to have a HEA (happy ever after) or at least a HFN (happy for now).

Pointing to the definition by the RWA Romance Writers of America. Further explained by the bookriot: If It Doesn’t Have an HEA (or HFN), It’s Not Romance.

You can write a tragedy or a sad love story of course but then it’s not a romance.

You can also write a story with a romantic sidestory but then your main focus is not the romance but some event/obstacle/problem they deal with. That’s not a romance, that’s a crime/mystery/scifi/whatever with a romantic sideplot.

Absolutely nothing wrong with writing that of course.

The next time someone makes a romantic novel inspired in any way by those Gothic novels of the Victorian era, I want the love interest to be based on Bruce Dickinson.

I mean that. Bruce Dickinson is manly as all get out, he’s got a somewhat prickly personality, he’s extremely intelligent but also a bit eccentric, he’s known hardship in the past and has had to work hard to get where he is now--and is actually a good person. He donates his time and energy to various good causes, defends his fans at concerts, is a good husband and father (from what I’ve seen, anyway).... If more love interests were like him, the Gothic romance genre wouldn’t be anywhere near as insulting as it often seems to be.

The Project: Muse a is really only in college because it's expected out of them. They don't care about their grades, or their classes, and if they had it their way, their major would be undefined forever. They are far more interested in the dorm parties, the drug exchanges all of campus, and how to avoid the RA. Muse b was epitome of perfection of their high school. They had the perfect grades, the perfect look, and the perfect stress to go along with it. That's what it was all about, being perfect. The trouble is that perfection doesn't really exist. But when they got a scholarship to a college across the country, it all changed. Muse b's carefully constructed reputation didn't matter anymore. When you work for so long at something, it's hard to give it up. They assumed they could keep up the fascade at college, but in a see of faces that don't know you, it's a lot harder than it looks. They've felt lost since they've been at college. It seems they never get invited to right parties, and there goes their social status. As for classes, well it was a lot harder than high school ever was. It seems they can't get anything right. Muse b finds out they are on the verge of failing their Sociology class. They have one last project to bring their grade up to a passing level. Okay, all they gotta do is buckle down. But it's a group project. Muse a could care less about the project, or their grades. But when they get paired up with muse b to prepare a creative presentation on a culture outside of society's norms, it's more effort than they bargained for. Muse b needs to loosen up, muse a needs to get their act together. But throughout the project, they realize, that maybe they just need someone to understand, someone to push them against the normals they have set for themselves, maybe they just need each other.

Okay, so muse A and muse B are best friends since childhood, practically inseparable. Through out high school muse A develops feelings for muse B however she won't let him know, afraid of ruining their friendship. Unbeknownst to muse A muse B has noticed that muse A has feelings for him. Muse B reciprocates those feelings but wants to tell muse A in a romantic gesture, so he creates a story about meeting this girl who he instantly felt a connection two. He describes how beautiful she is and all of the things he likes about her. When muse a hears this she is devastated and heartbroken, but she fakes a smile for her friend's sake. Eventually muse B wants muse A to meet the girl he has fallen in love with, muse A agrees. On the evening that muse A is supposed to meet muse B's love, muse B leads muse A to a warehouse thats decorated perfectly. Lightbulbs were strung from the ceiling and a picnic is spread out underneath the lights. Muse A is almost at tears because she knows that this date should be for her and not another girl, however, she fakes a smile again. Muse B leaves to go get the girl only to return with a mirror. He stands infront of muse A and tells her to look in the mirror. Muse A is confused until muse B grabs her hand and whispers "I want you to meet the girl I'm in love with.".

How To Be a Heart Breaker. "Rule number one, you got run. But baby when your done. You got to be the first to run. Rule number two. Just don't get attached to somebody you could lose." Muse a has just been screwed over time and time again. Always the first to fall in love, and always the first to fall flat on their ass. They just don't understand what it is about them that seems so easy to toss to the side. Muse b is a player, a heart breaker, a notorious schemer. Nothing and no one means anything to them, because love is a battlefield and they are the reigning conqueror. Desperate for some sort of change, there is only one things muse a can think to do to turn the tables. So they enlist the help of muse b to take them from a sobbing, pathetic dumpee, to someone who could crush hearts with the toe of their shoe. But nothing is free in love, baby. Muse a pays muse b to teach them their carefree and harlot-like ways. But these aren't the most typical lessons. Everything from dancing and dating etiquette to kissing and sexual positions. Let's just say that muse a has a lot to learn and muse b has a lot to teach. But somewhere a long the line, muse b realizes that they may have just stumbled upon the one that might actually make them consider monogamous life. But they may be too late. The gave muse a everything they need to go out, and get themselves someone who well never appreciate the amazing person muse b happened to find in their own back yard, so to speak.
