I absolutely adore tropes in romance, and even mention of some of them makes me auto-buy a book. So, here’s my favorite tropes with books that fit them:
Boss/Assistant: I’m so weak when it comes to people who love each other work together towards a certain goal. Or is it people who work together and fall in love? Either way, it’s so good. But they way to my heart is to have the assistant be the dominant one. They must be equal; the Boss can never have all the power. Honestly, having the assistant (and let’s be real, when I’m saying assistant, I’m talking about valets. VALETS) call all the shots in private is so good. God, I love this trope.
A Gentleman’s Position by Kj Charles
Class Difference: Ohohoho might I say favorite trope?? There’s something absolutely irresistible in two people of completely different social standing find each other and fight to be together.
A Seditious Affair by Kj Charles (you knew this was coming), The Magpie Lord by Kj Charles, Soldier’s Scoundrel and The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian, Hexmaker by Jordan L. Hawk
Enemies to Lovers: This one is like a catnip to me, but it must be done well and with care. Proper character development is essential because it’s very jarring when rushed. Hate-fueled fuck is good, but ideally, you should be able to overcome the hate y’know?
Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat, Unnatural Vice by Kj Charles (which granted, isn’t out yet, but given the previews, I’m gonna go on a limb and say it’s gonna fit this trope)
Fated Mates: Absolutely, but probably not in the way it’s supposed to be meant? I love when the characters think ‘ah, this must be fate. You are my destiny.’ That’s when the tears come
The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling
Childhood Sweethearts: Oh this one is just the sweetest, I love it so.
The Tamir Triad by Lynn Flewelling
Friends to Lovers: Oh yes please, absolutely! Especially when its people who have been friends for a very long time, suddenly realizing they’ve been in love this whole time. It’s so sweet, I love it.
Sidewinder series by Abigail Roux
Smart is Sexy: This trope gets me, especially when the non-genius character gets very flustered. So cute. Unless the smart character in an insufferable asshole know-it-all like BBC Sherlock, in which case the character can just fuck off.
The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian, Whyborne and Griffin series by Jordan L. Hawk, A Seditious Affair by Kj Charles, The God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek, Think of England by Kj Charles, Lord of the White Hell by Ginn Hale
People who almost gave up: I’m not sure what exactly is the common name for this trope but this is my favourite trope ever, not just in romance novels. As a person battling all kinds of mental illnesses and physical disabilities, these characters are the most relatable to me and I love to see their pain, growth, and eventual success. Give me characters with depression, ptsd, trauma, anxiety… Give me mentally ill and disabled characters and acknowledge how it impacts their life, but don’t let them be defeated. God I love them
